- roguenkatz, on 07/14/2009, -24/+105Just because we have the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms doesn't mean we need to have them all in the same place at the same time.
- AmyVernon, on 07/14/2009, -41/+113Yeah, that's gonna be a good idea.
- omgwtflawl, on 07/14/2009, -5/+73HOLY ***** SHOOTOUT AT THE OK CORRAL!!!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!
Except we won't. There are states that already allow this, and it isn't a problem in those states. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -13/+56Queue anti-gun liberals who didn't read the article. You can't drink and have a gun. Me.. I'd rather get wasted than have a gun on me.
- Khanvalescent, on 07/14/2009, -0/+42I live in Tucson, and I regularly see holstered guns (on citizens) in grocery stores and in other public places. Very strong cowboy and gun culture here - and I don't necessarily mean that in a negative way.
- O8SERVER, on 07/14/2009, -3/+44The law lets you conceal carry in a bar, but you still can't drink while carrying a weapon.
I personally have no problem with this new law. - Jaime2000, on 07/14/2009, -3/+40Now states need to permit them on campuses so students can protect themselves.
- BottledViolence, on 07/14/2009, -2/+35We're allowed to carry in places that sell alcohol here, but its illegal to have any measurable amount of alcohol in your system. There are no problems with this because the people who get CCW permits are much more responsable than the general public. People get the permit because they WANT to do things the right way. If they didn't care about following the law, they wouldn't bother getting the permit in the first place. The fact is that this is legal in many places already and its not a problem.
- wicketr, on 07/14/2009, -1/+34We just went through this in TN. While I agree that a strait-up bar is a little ridiculous, the problem was that people were not allowed to take their gun into regular restaurants that just happened to have a bar (ie Chilis, O'Charlie's, TGI Fridays).
Also note that it is still illegal to drink alcohol and carry a handgun. That is punishable up to a year in prison and fine.
This law corrects things so that Joe Gunslinger can go get a bite to eat at his favorite restaurant and not have to lock up his gun in his car to do so.
Of course some places can still ban guns in their establishment. To give an example: in Memphis you cannot carry a gun on Beale St (similar to Bourbon St) or in any of the bars there. - Rikkochet, on 07/14/2009, -3/+32He's got a point. The person who will drink despite the owners' "No Guns" sign by the business license (RTFA) is pretty much the same guy who comes in now and drinks even though it's completely illegal.
- FunFactor100, on 07/14/2009, -7/+36Just like how drinking and driving is illegal too....since it's illegal nobody's going to do it!
- greenmoonice, on 07/14/2009, -1/+29Guess what people who plan to shoot up nightclubs and bars generally ignore guns laws in the first place. I live in NYC and there have been plenty bar and nightclub shootings in the city even though it's illegal. I really doubt that the numbers of shooting will increase by people who are law abiding in the first place, (read actually getting permit instead of buying it on the street). These people who think gun control works are the same who thing drug control works - guess what in both cases they fail. I think anyone who is not a violent criminal should be allowed to carry a weapon perhaps it make the violent people less bold if they knew that there next victim may be able to defend him or herself.
- tomturtle18, on 07/14/2009, -5/+31FTA:
Arizonans with concealed weapons permits will be allowed to take a handgun into bars and RESTAURANTS that serve alcohol under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jan Brewer.
I go to restaurants all the time and don't drink. Don't see how I would be a danger to anyone if I was carrying. - chesterogilvie, on 07/14/2009, -11/+37What's the problem? You can't drink if you're carrying so it doesn't make a difference if you're standing in bar or in a library.
- DeadBabyFloat, on 07/14/2009, -1/+26Being an Arizona CCW holder, it's gonna be real nice to not have to leave a gun in the car just because I'm going to eat at a place that happens serve beer (like everywhere). That being said, I'm glad this privilege is being extended to CCW holders only, as they are the most law abiding group of citizens around. I don't drink when I'm carrying and I don't think permit holders are the type of dumb asses that mixes booze and firearms.
- Drakk0n, on 07/14/2009, -1/+25don't worry - this is AZ remember - you aren't allowed the tobacco in the bar
- MeLikeyTacos, on 07/14/2009, -16/+39...And his mother cried as he walked out,
Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town - wicketr, on 07/14/2009, -1/+22They passed the bill in TN as well. In addition to that you can now take them to the park unless explicitly forbidden on a per park basis.
- yeeaauuh, on 07/14/2009, -39/+58I'm actually pretty Pro-Gun, but in bars? No way. There's enough fear and loathing in bars without adding guns to the mix.
- mdelling, on 07/14/2009, -1/+18Or at least professors... I'm from virginia tech, and several of the professors I know that work in the building that was attacked have military experience... things might have worked out differently if one of them had been armed.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -3/+20But can you take them to AA meetings?
- daze144, on 07/14/2009, -1/+18This isn't a big deal.. I have a concealed weapons licence, and by the way I'm a liberal :D
I know how to use a weapon, and I'm trained to use and carry one.
I want to see stats here before you guys start saying its going to be dangerous.
People who go through the process of getting licensed usually don't commit crimes.
Show some statistics before you jump to conclusions.
"States with right-to-carry laws have lower overall violent crime rates, compared to states without right-to-carry laws. In states whose laws respect the citizen's right-to-carry guns for self defense the total violent crime is 13% lower, homicide is 3% lower, robbery is 26% lower and aggravated assault is 7% lower." (Data: Crime in the United States 1996, FBI Uniform Crime Reports) - grubwort, on 07/14/2009, -5/+21Why would the bars support this? If you're carrying, you ain't drinking. If you ain't drinking, the bar ain't making money.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/14/2009, -14/+28Right... Because THAT'S easy to enforce...
- wicketr, on 07/14/2009, -1/+15You could also say the same thing if guns were banned in bars to begin with. People (aka the bad guys) will do it anyway.
If a bar isn't going to have patrons go through a security check upon entry, what's the point in banning guns if the bad guys are the most likely to bring them in and ignore the rule? - drunkCatholic, on 07/14/2009, -2/+16I don't understand how you people are getting dugg up in some of these comments. This does not give free reign for everyone to get all ***** up in a bar while carrying a pistol.
It allows those who have concealed carry permits (which are a pain in the ass to get with all the hoops you have to jump through) to bring their gun into a place that serves food and alcohol. They are still not allowed to drink alcohol while carrying a concealed weapon.
There are quite a few states that allow this, and guess what, it's not one big gunfight every Friday night. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+13well by that logic people would carry guns into a bar regardless of legality or not. So really no problem should be had by this bill being passed.
- drunkCatholic, on 07/14/2009, -10/+22Seriously, read the ***** article. IT'S STILL AGAINST THE LAW TO DRINK WHILE CARRYING.
Did you even get past OMG GUNS IN BARS???? - zoomaKabu, on 07/15/2009, -0/+11Weed is illegal everywhere in the US. Anybody have trouble getting any?
- paulvq, on 07/14/2009, -4/+15By your logic, drunk driving laws are stupid as well.
- jba68, on 07/14/2009, -1/+12who the hell would bury Johnny Cash.. sure sign of foolishness there...
- Rodskii, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11You don't have to drink while at a bar. What if I am the designated driver, just went to play pool, or I am not even at a bar but a restaurant like Chili's and just having dinner?
- maz2331, on 07/14/2009, -3/+13In Pennsylvania, you can even be hammered while packing, and we don't have any sort of problem of bar shootings.
- mattcburns, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11What's better is that she vetoed a bill the same day that would legalize sparklers because she felt they presented a safety hazard.
- jezsik, on 07/14/2009, -3/+13Go for the drinks, stay for the show.
- bashturd, on 07/14/2009, -3/+12Those same dishonest people are the ones who go to a bar right now with a gun even though it's illegal. This law does not make things any more dangerous than they are currently.
- commenter01, on 07/14/2009, -7/+16I seriously think all of this is bull. First off, this isn't doing anything more than allowing law abiding citizens from being able to protect themselves in bars. Think about it. Criminals that want to carry a f'ing gun inside a bar will do so without a permit. In fact, they can carry them everywhere they don't get frisked.
In other words, the only people that have concealed gun permits are those who *abide by the law* and get one. Having a gun doesn't make you a criminal. And permitting law abiding people to carry guns wherever the law permits them shouldn't be a problem either. - appleofdischord, on 07/14/2009, -6/+15I think people get into barfights more often than fights at home. (Unless you're counting domestic violence... in which case, I'd argue those people ought not to have lethal weapons lying around).
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9I did that at a local bar that attracts some.. lower end people.. It was fun to watch a massive brawl but not so fun to have to get up at 6 to make a court appearance as one of the only sober witnesses.
- yaroze, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8I believe they should enforce the 2nd amendment, and allow all who want to carry well carry!
- reiggin, on 07/15/2009, -2/+10Perhaps you're a ***** retard.
- justdru, on 07/14/2009, -4/+12Tennessee just allowed the same thing - venue owners there are planning to ignore it!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/14/arizon ... - mdelling, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8That doesn't mean its illegal... that just means that people that are scared of guns will freak out.
- drunkCatholic, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8Depends on the local laws actually. Open carry is legal in some places, others not.
- BottledViolence, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7I support this change and still agree with you. I can carry in places that serve, but I don't because I'd rather booze. On the other hand, having been almost shot in a bar that was robbed, I'd like to see sober, responsible people to be able to carry.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -4/+11***** yeah!
- Elderon, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8I was gonna post how I was against this but then I read the article, I'm totally ok with this as long as the person carrying does not drink. I see no reason why for example you shouldn't be able to carry into a bar if you were say the designated driver for friends or whatever.
If you drink any alcohol while carrying though I'm all for revoking your permit. - mst3kcrow, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6That's pretty nice. I always feel like something is missing when I am not carrying. The same way as when I forget my Leatherman at home.
- DeadBabyFloat, on 07/14/2009, -1/+7On the off chance that they have a run in with THAT guy. Do you really think that the reason that guy didn't have a gun was because he doesn't have a permit, or because of any law? You said yourself he wouldn't have a problem with murder... so why bother abiding by some regulation?
I'm glad your friends are okay. -
