- Dralite, on 04/12/2008, -2/+38Why do the 2 kids in the US pic have pizza instead of buckets of chicken... Yes, i'm black and i couldn't help myself, Dig me down
- Sassmo, on 04/12/2008, -0/+31I think that's called "college."
- FreshWes, on 04/12/2008, -1/+25i once ate only ramen for a week i spent like 3 bucks
- Scheissen, on 04/12/2008, -0/+23Different economies of scale.
- DLRULZ, on 04/12/2008, -1/+13Look how much beer and wine the German family had in the picture! Half of the $500 probably went on booze.
- kakwakas, on 04/12/2008, -0/+11Those are Germans, not Americans.
- Petebyte, on 04/12/2008, -0/+11You survived by eating the food of the holy FSM.

- Sassmo, on 04/12/2008, -2/+12I would prefer to eat with the Egyptian or Polish families although the Mexican family comes in a close third because of all the good looking fruit they've got. The plethora of Coke that they have is a little bit of a turn-off for me though.
- ADVIZR, on 04/12/2008, -1/+10$50 can easily feed 10 people for a week in America too. It's just that most people are used to eating whatever they want.
25 lbs. of urad or lentils is $30. Then there's $20 left for miscellaneous stuff like salt, the incremental cost of filtering free water, energy (or a matchbook to light a fire), and maybe some bulk cans of tomato paste, garlic, carrots, potatoes, onion, and some other things with high vitamin/nutritional content, etc. Then you're good to go with some decent lentil soup for quite awhile.

- bmson, on 04/12/2008, -3/+11Americans in general eat allot of junk
- jerbaker, on 04/12/2008, -1/+8Did that picture of the Americans make anyone else order a pizza?
- lschofield, on 04/12/2008, -1/+8If the American family bought groceries that looked more like what the rest of the world bought, their bill would be much higher. Check out some research I've done into this phenomenon - its the cause of the Farm Bill which is currently being debated. Commodity crops are being subsidized at extreme amounts, whereas fruits and vegetables are deemed "specialty crops" and only receive 2% of the available funding for subsidies. This explains the flood of high fructose corn syrup and soy oil, and ultimately why a processed food consisting of a myriad of ingredients and mass-marketing can cost less than some root vegetables simply pulled out of the ground. My page on it (with many links to other articles and critiques, an action page and further background and status updates on this legislation) is located at http://hubpages.com/hub/What-is-wrong-with-the-far ... I also have a page where US and Canadian grocers websites are compiled - located at http://www.centsible.net/groceries.shtml This is interesting to see regional differences in pricing and products. Thanks for adding this - I may link to it in one of my pages!
- rctech, on 04/13/2008, -0/+6The Great Britain family consumes about 1 dog per week...
http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1626 ... - inactive, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6It's only funny if a black guy says it, because anyone else is incapable of humor and only harbors ill will.
- DaffyDuck, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6You must have bought the whole restaurant out then. Damn, that's a lot of food.
- psykiv, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6Is it me or does the Italian family eat a lot of grain-based products? Seems like half their food is just types of bread.
- laohare, on 04/12/2008, -5/+10I once lived with a girl from Niger who told me $50 would feed 10 people for one week, if not longer. She was shocked at how much I spent on groceries for 4 people.
- Niubai, on 04/12/2008, -1/+6You can clearly see in the pictures which family has less natural food (fruits, vegetables) and more industrialized *****.
- DaffyDuck, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Mmmm German beer.....2nd to Belgian beer IMO.
- inactive, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4I saw the fruit before I saw the Coke and thought "Man, that sure is a fat kid for eating that much fruit". Thanks for pointing that out.
- marx2k, on 04/12/2008, -6/+10hahaha Why do Mexicans drink so much soda and why do black people (in America) eat so much junk?
- allywilson, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4No, but I did think the Germans were scarily well organised...
- radarbeam, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3$14 of Taco bell all by yourself? Wowzers!
- bdbr, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Obviously you've never been to Italy.
- thecoolestguy, on 04/13/2008, -0/+3Those ***** need to get some vegetables.
- inactive, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3The mexicans are the fattest
- jjsixty6, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3IMO the Italians have the yummiest looking food. Mexico comes in a close second. And is it just me, or did the family from California look like they got plucked out of the 90s?
- marx2k, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4I don't get why people get all nuts when someone points out differences between races. It's not a racist statement to suggest that people of a certain race prefer certain types of food. Hey, here's a statement... Mexicans, on average, tend to be shorter than white people and black people. OMIGOD HE HATES MEXICANS. Relax people.
- nomadofthehills, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3What do you call someone from Niger? Its not Nigerian, that's someone from Nigeria...
- peteinakl, on 04/12/2008, -2/+4How'd the Italian guy get such a hot wife?
- arcooke, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it makes me sick how much it costs to eat healthy here.
- steveoco, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Wow I seem to be suffering from diggja vu... seriously, anyone who has been a digger for a few years would have recognized this article a couple times already. Is digg just new people posting ***** without checking if it already has been?
- Nubli, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I feel guilty now. I spent $14 on Taco Bell last night after work and ate it all =(
- ecualung, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2It's interesting that they chose an indigenous family to represent Ecuador. Certainly, they are a large percentage of the population, but not necessarily representative of the country at large. I lived with a mestizo family for a year, and although they ate similar food, they ate more of it because they were more affluent than the typical indigenous family.
- bdbr, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I came here to post that too! Two adults - four bottles of wine and nearly a case of beer...every week!
- DaffyDuck, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3We pay less for processed food than fresh produce. Unfortunate but true.
- vikingboy, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2mirror http://www.fixingtheplanet.com/one-weeks-worth-foo ...
- Attol, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2It took me a minute to find the KFC but its next to the Burger King cup.
- Kabloink, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I think they should have included what percentage of their income they spend on food. With the different exchange rates for the countries, simply stating the costs in dollars does not represent the actual costs to them. The $1.23 for Chad may seem cheap, but what if thats 50% or higher of their income.
- inactive, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Someone ought to tell these people to put some of that food in the fridge. It's going to spoil.
- abaaa, on 04/12/2008, -2/+4Well call me crazy, but in America a bag of rice as big as the one in Chad costs much more than $1.23. The straight conversion from how much they spend on food from their currency to the US dollar might be correct, but they are getting more food for their money than they would if they did their shopping in the USA.
- misterjangles, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2The pizza did look tasty. But damn, that family needs to buy some fruit and veggies! If it weren't' for the three tomatoes and one bunch of grapes all they have is total crap food for the whole week.
- gridbread, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2But it's most likely coke without high fructose corn syrup.
- arcooke, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2That's a lot of poop.
- Harbinger67, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I'm not so sure I want to eat with that Polish family. I'd have to find out how they prepared for the giant stuffed elephant first.
- bloobloo, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Nigerien according to the CIA world factbook
- mordero, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Well if you are going to digg a post with stereotypes in it, why not make a stereotypical comment?
