- MMusick, on 07/20/2009, -1/+42That's impressive but their prices aren't. I wish I could afford to do all my shopping at Whole Foods.
- JanSimpson, on 07/20/2009, -2/+38Buy from local farmers or farmer markets - http://www.localharvest.org/ why pay for overpriced merchandise - better quality - better nutrition - it hasn't been shipped on ship - or sitting in a warehouse - buy local
- phyr3x, on 07/20/2009, -3/+25Whole Foods = Whole Paycheck
- eesquared, on 07/20/2009, -0/+21We call them "Whole Paycheck"...but the quality is good and they are doing the right thing.
- bluehouse, on 07/20/2009, -0/+20Don't be too proud, Whole Foods. Big compianies like Walmart and Target and yes even you Whole Foods, have been working on watering down the USDA Organic standards. Might as well be Homeopathic USDA Organic
- jiggawatt, on 07/20/2009, -1/+16Totally agree with the first two posts.
Farmer's market are a great way to support local farmers/enonomy, eat healthier, reduce carbon foot print of the transportation process, and save money on produce and other items.
Not everything you can get at Whole Foods you can find at a Farmer's market however, and there are some great organic foods and niche items to be had at at Whole Foods, but you will pay a higher cost for it. That's the nature of the beast when buying niche grocery items.
Support local as much as you can. - veggiemoore, on 07/20/2009, -0/+10Green herb stuff...you may have stumbled on their secret.
- zagatbuzz, on 07/20/2009, -1/+9True, as is often the case with the healthier selections...
- nobarcode, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7sounds like you had a really exciting week.
- bringitontimx, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6anger!
- nicktomyskins, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7whole foods sell local goods as well...
- bluehouse, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Start here: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-organic3-200 ... and go from there
- Fleagleman, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6John Mackey is still a douche.
- M4xMcLeod, on 07/20/2009, -1/+7Finally a reason for Whole Foods to charge even more for their products!
- cowsgonemadd3, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Dude try their pizza. I found out they make pizza and you can buy one for 15 bucks at our local store, even though for us here that is very high(5 bucks more than usual) it is the best pizza I have ever had. I am going to have to go back and get the recipe. It was a pizza with this green herb stuff on it and chicken. Just insane!
- doctordbx, on 07/20/2009, -1/+5Must Read! Omnivore's Dilemma
http://www.amazon.com/Omnivores-Dilemma-Natural-Hi ...
You might think twice about eating from Whole Foods afterwards. - phyx726, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Trader Joes says otherwise.
- chockster, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I've still not forgiven them for getting rid of their Buffalo Chicken toasted sandwich. One of the few things there that was worth every penny... I'm on a one-man boycott of them until they bring that sandwich back.
But I haven't actually told them that. I fail at activism. - enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3i've been to tons of Whole Foods in the Bay Area, and have never seen that. I have seen burrito bars where one of the "chefs" makes it for you.
- djHBRD, on 07/20/2009, -2/+5Quote of the week for me, heard outside of a similar all-organic restaurant last night: "You know, these organic food stores are really nothing but a giant douchebag convention."
- Klisk, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3@SuckaMCz "No more than $50."
That's what they mean by expensive.
Most people spend around 15-25 dollars a week on their food. That's a single person. No where near 50 dollars.. This is why "organic" food is considered unhealthy to americans. We live off of bulk pre-packaged food that is obtained dirt cheap. - enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3uhm, there is already such a thing as "food stamps", which can be traded for organic food, and your scenario has not happened yet.
- milkmit, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3It's not so bad if you think of food as an investment toward your health, and are willing to spend a bit more money on good quality food and less on gadgets and such.
That said, I'm never quite so successful at that, but I certainly feel better about buying and consuming food that's not the typical over-processed fake kind. I just wish that crap didn't taste so damn good sometimes.... - NiftyG, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I'd rather spend a little bit of money on healthy food now than spend a lot of money on medical care later.
- Haptick, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Wait...by government intervention do you mean food quality assurance and prohibition of false advertising, i.e, basic consumer rights? Ah yes, lets abandon all the horribly Socialist concepts of consumer rights and plunge ourselves right back to the 1800's. What wonderful times those were! Hey, maybe if we ask nicely, black people will serve the rich white land owners, for free!
Plutarchy...oops, I mean Free Market Capitalism for everyone! - nadadingsda, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4I like some of the stuff they have, but their prices are ridiculous. Also, their house brand is called "365 Organic" or something.. the funny thing is that most "365 Organic" actually aren't organic.
I didn't know there are only 273 stores in the whole US.. from where I live I can walk to two different wholefoods stores in like 15min.. they seem to be everywhere ;-) - endgame, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I like buying from local farms however much of the stuff they have is all from Mexico.... =(
- Leviathan433, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2You're ignoring a larger demographic of poorer people.
- BrewBeau, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Organic food is shortened from the real term, organically grown food.
- enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2if you can't tell the difference between a rib-eye from Safeway, and a grass-fed organic rib-eye from Whole Foods, then save your money, but don't assume the rest of us share your lack of culinary sophistication.
- Barackalypse, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4Organic food is a redundant term, all food is organic by definition. If they mean fertilizer, pesticide, or hormone free, say that, because it actually has meaning.
- dhughes, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2 Organic seems like the speed of light, the harder you try to approach it the more energy it takes.
The vehicles that farmed the crop spew particulates, the people who picked it had no washroom to use so it may have E.coli on it, the packaging has BPA in it and the kid who stocked it picks his nose and has a cold.
Organic is OK but yeah as mentioned it's expensive and you'll never be 100% sure it's free from some sort of contamination. - Blablah01, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4"It's not organic food that's too expensive, it's 'conventional' food that's too cheap."
- Haptick, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2I understand the origin of your point Barackalypse, but since you want to labor a point, I will labor one myself: you are wrong in stating "you can't inorganically grow an organic substance", as that would be the basis for most organic chemistry and wholly ignorant of the historical synthesis of urea by Friedrich Wöhler, which disproved that organic compounds (like urea) cannot be synthesized (or grown in a beaker).
Furthermore, organic is a widely accepted synonym for natural, thus making organically grown food a correct usage (versus merely containing hydrocarbons, which is your point), as organically grown food is touted as being free from synthetically processed fertilizers, pesticides, genetic engineering, or synthetic chemical additives--natural.
So while I understand the point that organic in terms of chemistry means containing hydrocarbon compounds and derived from living organisms, and bears no significant difference from just calling it "natural" food, using it in place of natural is still acceptable vernacular. - BaphClass, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3*****. Expensive.
- enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2and their meat counter, and their wine, and their coffee/tea, and their international foods, etc etc
- Caskerville, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3"They" are not organic. They are certified to sell and claim that they sell organic foods. And not everything an organic certified store sells has to be organic.
Also, it is nearly impossible for a retail chain to police every single facility that is involved in every step of every creation/storage/transportation process for hundreds of thousands of products. - Klisk, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Farmer markets are more expensive here.
- booyahbitch, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Shame on you for linking to hippie porn!!!!
- peestandingup, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Supply & demand. Its so expensive because its not the norm. If people demanded better quality foods instead of scarfing down $1 double cheese burgers from McDonalds, it would be much more affordable.
- stonebear, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4And that means what exactly? There is no consensus on what actually constitutes organic. As it stands; quite a bit of stuff is labeled organic that really shouldn't be. Most of it, in fact. Anyway, I don't shop there. I can manage the real cost of food, plus cost of the organic/free range sticker. But paying boutique as well puts the store out of reach and into the absurd. I guess the rest of us will just have to get by on factory food while we wait for the rich to get their fill.
- babyheadout, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2It's a sugar mama meat market.
- enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Whole Foods is the only national chain I know of which is not in a race to the bottom.
- BrewBeau, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Their cheese is pretty damn good, too.
- phyx726, on 07/24/2009, -0/+1Pesto is quite delicious
- Bluesky0010, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Supply and demand works both ways, nice try. If they LOWERED THEIR PRICES maybe more people would shop there.
- Klisk, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1I graduated college over 20 years ago.
If you buy pre-packaged food in bulk 25-dollars a week/per person/is about the average.
That is how Americans eat. ;) Just because you're outside of that demographic, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. - enantiodromia, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1I said "best restaurants", not "the applebee's you go to with your softball buddies".
- manjar, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Oh teh LOLZ - a "let me google that for you" tinyurl!
Search results are a bunch of pages that have conflicting definitions of what "organic" means.
Douchebag. - enantiodromia, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1http://tinyurl.com/lvuxx7
