- grbruner, on 02/05/2009, -0/+12If you want to know more, CSPAN has 12 minute "tour" of the white house kitchen. The current executive chef takes you through how the kitchen is run. I think it is pretty cool.

- brandita, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7I was honestly pleasantly shocked when I found out that the presidents have to pay for their groceries out of their salary. They get a free chef though.
- Gemfinder, on 02/06/2009, -0/+6When I was in cook school, we had a substitute teacher for one week while our breads teacher was out sick.
He had major connections with the Democratic Party and knew the head chef in the Clinton White House, and every few months he'd take a select few students out to Washington (pay for their travel and accomodations) and bake apple pies in the White House kitchen. That time around it was supposed to be the middle of April — nice time to be in DC.
Oh yeah, you BET I tried for it. Unfortunately I didn't make the cut. But oh! A foodie's Holy Grail. I saw a documentary on the kitchen's day-to-day work. They have one person who does pulled sugar sculpture centerpieces for state dinners — how's that for a dream job? - aethelberga, on 02/06/2009, -0/+6I realise no one comes to the White House directly from their semi in the suburbs, and so is used to having "staff", but I know I'd want to be able to make my own cup of tea and bologna sandwich in my own kitchen.
- copypastry, on 02/06/2009, -1/+6Obama's stocked the crisper with ELITIST ARUGULA
- BeShirtHappy, on 02/05/2009, -0/+4I found this very interesting. I'd be like Mamie Eisenhower... I would have to be hands on.
- ChromaVita, on 02/06/2009, -0/+4That's a very odd figure to have such strong negative feelings about...
- kotn2012, on 02/06/2009, -0/+4Victor Baxter didn't even get a mention.
- rifdawg, on 02/06/2009, -2/+6I can't believe they have to buy their own food.
- spookyttws, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3It may seem like a little thing, but I really like that the First Family has to pay their own Grocery Bill. It may seem trivial, but as a tax payer I don't really want to have to foot the bill for anyone elses family (democrat, republican or other.)
- Fox318, on 02/06/2009, -1/+3I'd rather those pennies be put to better use...
- bipolarruledout, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2A separate kitchen just for the pastry chef.... I got to say that would be a fun trip.
- happyhamburgers, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Apparently they have to buy their own groceries to have a family round table, but if they declare a State Dinner and invite some Heads of State round for a nosh then the taxpayer grabs the tab.
State Dinners FTW - techguru2006, on 02/06/2009, -4/+6If I was Pres, I'd make Sara Lee, Betty Crocker, and Chef Boyardee as my personal chef. Maybe throw in the Quaker Oats dude too.
- strictnein, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2The pastry chef's kitchen is tiny and super cramped. History Channel or Discovery had a show on the White House recently.
- grbruner, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Yeah, the Executive Pastry Chef actually has his (currently it is a man) own kitchens and are separate from the main dining kitchens.
- strictnein, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2You do look amazingly small.
- slicksingh2k, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2What's the security in the white house kitchen? Like is there a taste tester or something? Kinda curious
- bipolarruledout, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1The nice thing about a professional chef is you actually can eat very healthy if you choose to. For myself at least quality trumps quantity every time. This is perhaps the best white house perk there is aside from maybe air force one.
- bipolarruledout, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I actually like to cook myself and would LOVE having a professional kitchen to work in but screw it; I'll never be as good as a professional chef and I wouldn't have a problem tasking the staff for whatever. That's why people dine out in the first place.
- beezn, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Neither Washington nor Jefferson lived in the White House, it wasn't even built until John Adams was President.
- tinkafoo, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1This is something you certainly don't get on the tour!
- bluemist, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2Glad they retained Cristeta Comerford as head chef. As a fellow native of the Philippines, we're proud of her.
Just some related humor:
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Bush_To_Filipino ... - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I looks surprisingly small considering how often the White House has to entertain 200+ guests.
- innocentsinner, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1What, no Aunt Jemima or Uncle Ben?
- WinkyMcGee, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Exactly! Real Americans only eat Iceberg lettuce swimming in ranch dressing! Maybe some bacon bits, but even that is a bit French...
- bipolarruledout, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Well pastry can be a real pain in the ass and takes a long time....not surprising.
- IAmTheGuy, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2Why didn't they show the walk-in freezer filled with Hot Pockets for when Taft was in office?
- fondalashay, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1i had no clue that the President had to pay for his own food. that is really cool.. nice and fair
- zagatbuzz, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Great story on so many levels: One, it's interesting to see how the White House Kitchen (inc. the room, appliances and chefs) have evolved. Two, without the dates in the captions, several of the photos from the 1950s to the present appear timeless (they look like they could be from today).
- strictnein, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Food for family/friends: they pay
Food for government business/state dinners: we pay - SirBruce, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Racist!
- bipolarruledout, on 02/06/2009, -2/+2That is rather odd considering the multitude of perks granted to the president estimated to be several hundred thousand dollars.
- inactive, on 05/30/2009, -0/+0Nice!
Great story on kitchens http://remodelingsd.com - GeyserShitdick, on 02/06/2009, -2/+2Mamie Eisenhower is a *****.
- subtafuge, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0You really believe they will be paying their own grocery bills? What about for entertaining guests?
- shedtroll, on 02/06/2009, -1/+1Dammit now I'm hungry...
- aiden786, on 04/04/2009, -0/+0We all take notice of the chefs in our favorite restaurant, at one point or another. We recognize them by their signature hats and chef aprons.http://www.culinaryclassics.com/chef-apron.htm
- chefncrafty, on 02/06/2009, -2/+1great story
- WinkyMcGee, on 02/06/2009, -1/+0It seems a bit arbitrary to me. We have no problem providing them with housing, cars, gas money, light bills, the silverware and china, maid service, security, and an indoor bowling alley. But God forbid we buy their milk for them. I'm not saying I'm against them paying for it, just saying it seems a bit...goofy.
- anselm83, on 02/06/2009, -2/+1I'd be willing to add a penny to my taxes so the Obamas don't have to pay their own grocery bill.
- 1to1, on 02/05/2009, -6/+3VERY nice
- PROFITtrueDAT, on 02/06/2009, -5/+2Obama needs to get control of that house............put that wife of his to work in the kitchen
Bitch where is my turkey pot pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
