On the endangered list in: San Francisco - RaspberryBarret, on 05/04/2008, -3/+88High-fructose corn syrup: Let it die!
- TJ11240, on 05/04/2008, -3/+71you mean cold, dead arteries.
- Whackly, on 05/04/2008, -0/+61I don't think it was meant as a backup in case the site goes down. I think it was meant as a service to people, like myself, who absolutely hate having to click through these lists. There's no reason the list can't all be on one page.
- InfamousAtheist, on 05/04/2008, -3/+43Unfortunately, it's going to take more than one U.S. City banning HFCS to kill it.
End the ridiculous subsidies on corn. HFCS is a good example of the U.S. Government showing how little it cares for American citizens. The stuff is evil and it's in EVERYTHING.
Ban the ***** now and start putting real sugar in our foods! - scotticus, on 05/04/2008, -3/+42Unfortunately
- SabrinaHeaven, on 05/04/2008, -3/+41"Government agencies have outlawed these forbidden foods, but epicures love them."
Buried as inaccurate, misleading, and DANGEROUS.
Epicures DO NOT love trans fats and high fructose corn syrup--the food INDUSTRY does and it is their paid lobbyists who push this ***** message in the media. These chemical compounds pose a grave health risk to this nation, but the food industry is more concerned with lining its pockets by using unhealthy chemical compounds instead of natural fats and sugar.
Also note how they chose the one trans fat in the world that looks like butter and made it up to look like a gourmet dish. Way to whore for the food industry, CNN! - inactive, on 05/04/2008, -12/+45Horse meat is delicious. We had steaks in Paris on our first night there in 2005. Very lean meat.
Waiting for some bleeder to call me a cannibal or some other American insult. - edger2006, on 05/04/2008, -2/+29As long as they don't ban, lamb testicles, baby goat scrotum, Elk penis, fried pig foreskin...IT'S ALL GuuuD!
- nahsrocketeer75, on 05/04/2008, -17/+42They'll have to pry my trans fats out of my cold, dead hands.
- Prototek, on 05/04/2008, -10/+34It's cnn.com. It's not going down.
- pardimate, on 05/04/2008, -3/+27"With rare exception, no reaction below 480 °C occurs between H2 and organic compounds in the absence of catalysts, such as palladium."
Taken from my Organic Chem book.
Your statement is a gross exaggeration bordering on an outright fabrication :). - Jwzupancic, on 05/04/2008, -9/+32Ah, yes, what would I do if the government wasn't here to protect me from myself?
- alexforcefive, on 05/04/2008, -4/+27You'd probably die from food poisoning or electrocution or your house falling down.
- lucidguru, on 05/04/2008, -4/+25I hate to break it to you, but trans fats are cancerous too...
- verevi, on 05/04/2008, -1/+22There are no epicures that love Trans-fats and HFCS. The go against the very nature of what an epicure is.
- norman619, on 05/04/2008, -1/+22The phrase is "couldn't care less."
Why do so many people ***** that one phrase up so regularly? - xkorbin, on 05/04/2008, -1/+19Yes, HFCS can die. It may cost a little more, but we want real cane sugar like Mexican and other countries' sodas.
- tapo, on 05/04/2008, -0/+17Dugg for 'chilean sea bass' being a marketing name for 'patagonian toothfish'.
- devin_mm, on 05/04/2008, -0/+17Same with sea bass and shark fins, there isn't a ban just a restriction on catch.
- blast_flame, on 05/04/2008, -1/+18It should not be banned. Just end the damn corn subsidies and it will die on its own.
- BurningSky, on 05/04/2008, -2/+18I drank Absinthe in Paris, it's famed psychedelic properties are absolute *****. Maybe it's because I have experience in actual psychedelics but, in my experience, Absinthe does nothing but get you really drunk...
- briguymaine, on 05/04/2008, -0/+15whenever I travel, the first thing I do is seek out a real local restaurant and try the local fare. I hate it when all you can get is "International Cuisine" what a waste.
- MonarchWastxD, on 05/04/2008, -0/+14The french use raw milk a lot in the making of many cheeses, and we get raw milk in the UK from the milkman from farms sourced locally. It's so much better than other milk, and has a much fuller taste. I've been having this for ten years now, with no health problems.
Coincidentally, my asthma was cured/ended eight years ago. - TheSpook, on 05/04/2008, -1/+15Let them eat ethanol.
- Doitdifferently, on 05/04/2008, -3/+17It shouldn't be banned but it large milking companies shouldn't be selling it either, which is why the bans happened from my understanding, since it's something that only works in a local environment. A bottle only lasts 2 weeks after it's bottled which doesn't give it enough time to be able to travel anywhere and sit on store shelves.
It really is much healthier for you. My daughter was a preemie so she's always been small and slow growing. We had been giving her whole store milk until we moved near a dairy farm and decided to give the raw milk a try now she's growing like a weed, which is a ironic because there's no growth hormones. It also doesn't make my stomach upset like store milk does. - norman619, on 05/04/2008, -9/+23Damn near anything can cause cancer if you overload on it. And everything is bad for you when you go overboard on it. I guess we should ban water since if you drink too much of it you will die.
- TheHappyRobot, on 05/04/2008, -0/+14cold, dead, fat hands?
- nroose, on 05/04/2008, -1/+15Taxing the corn syrup after subsidising the corn. Now that is efficiency.
I think we should just stop subsidizing corn and potatoes. The obesity problem in America can be directly correlated with these subsidies, and these foods are not good for humans. We should let the market work (in this case, anyway). - SabrinaHeaven, on 05/04/2008, -0/+13I don't speak chemist (or chemistry student), but it looks to me like you're trying to imply that trans-fats are created naturally in the body, and that the only danger is that Americans are too "lazy" to burn them off, and that offends me. You seem to know enough to lie to yourself and others. You should know about the dangers of these compounds.
Looking at your recent comments, you oppose "tree huggers", Hispanic immigration, marijuana growers--this is from the past few days. If I digg further into your comment history maybe I'll find something that doesn't make you look like a rightwing stereotype, but I wouldn't bet on it. - chaos7, on 05/04/2008, -1/+13foie gras is disturbing
- pardimate, on 05/04/2008, -2/+14Additionally, while water provides necessary hydration, there is no benefit to consuming trans fats. So if you want to go with an extreme statement, that's fine, but it really doesn't work here with something we don't need, and does nothing but harm to our body in even small amounts.
- pardimate, on 05/04/2008, -5/+16I'm pretty sure trans fats are one step below poison, and stay in your body forever. The daily limit is 2 grams/day, and many foods far exceed that. So yes, anything in excess is bad, but if the excess is very easily and often met, then I'd say it's probably better to just stay away from it.
- PueSi, on 05/04/2008, -4/+15Raw milk do taste better, it shouldn't be banned.
- jessestorm, on 05/04/2008, -3/+13Yeah I don't believe that for a second. The difference between an oil and a fat is whether or not it is a liquid or a solid at room temperature. If you heat up a fat, it turns to liquid. It does not, however, change it's physical make-up. A trans-fat is completely different than a non trans-fat and heating doesn't cause it it change! It has to do with the way the bonds between carbon molecules are shaped. Hydrogenation causes trans-fats to be formed by taking unsaturates and adding hydrogen molecules which take away double bonds. This process causes trans-fats, not heating. You should read up on organic chemistry before making claims about it.
- Drahkar, on 05/04/2008, -1/+10I hear Palladium plated cooking pans is all the rage now.
- verkon, on 05/04/2008, -1/+10Didn't see soylent green anywhere on the list.
- wendelgee2, on 05/04/2008, -2/+11I love all the righties who can't believe that the gov't would dare to tell them what horrible poisons they can and cannot put in their bodies (I'm referring mainly to trans-fats), but when it comes to legalizing marijuana and other controlled substances, they are for cracking down on those hippies and criminals. The laissez faire attitude, she disappear! What's the difference?
- invinciblechunk, on 05/04/2008, -0/+9It would only be cannibalism if you're a horse... (are you?)
- sancho, on 05/04/2008, -1/+10Really? Got a citation for that?
- bdbr, on 05/04/2008, -0/+9If you're eating an animal, you're eating an animal. I don't see why horses get any extra credit...and I grew up around those dumb, flighty animals.
- briguymaine, on 05/04/2008, -1/+10in Malaysia they have this fruit called Durian that the locals say tastes like heaven, smells like hell. It's banned from tourist/business hotels hotels because it really does stick. Kind of like nasty feet and and old, wet dish towel. I can't describe the taste other than delicious.
- inactive, on 05/04/2008, -1/+10oh dear....... FAIL
- edd17, on 05/04/2008, -1/+9perhaps i overestimated the average digg users appreciation of irony.
- incd, on 05/04/2008, -0/+8Mmm.. Forbidden food. *Homer Simpson drool*
- Anagrama, on 05/04/2008, -1/+9mmm.. Lime Jarritos..
Also, try Jones soda - blast_flame, on 05/04/2008, -0/+8You probably have had corn syrup. It's in most soft drinks.
- alexforcefive, on 05/04/2008, -2/+10Any particular aspect of it? Or just genetic modification in general? Because that sort of rules out thousands of years of agriculture...
Saying "GM food" should be banned is like saying "transportation" should be banned -
