- bjenidles, on 03/30/2009, -0/+25I've never heard of it before, but that avocado pie doesn't seem that weird and looks delicious. In fact, I'd be willing to try any of the other items if I could wash the taste out of my mouth with a slice of that.
- weatherlsp, on 03/31/2009, -0/+19I've lived in California my entire life (29 years) and I have never heard of avocado pie.
- ztiworoh, on 03/31/2009, -1/+13Grew up eating scrapple. One of my favorite foods. It's really not bad if you give it a try
- yurishoujo, on 03/31/2009, -2/+13What? No Lutefisk from Minnesota and Wisconsin?
- Jabrams2, on 03/30/2009, -3/+13I still have nightmares from being fed raw scrapple when I was pledging my fraternity. that stuff was so incredibly disgusting.
- darthpaul88, on 03/31/2009, -1/+10no garbage plate from rochester new york?
- readacook, on 03/31/2009, -0/+9Sacrilege!
- Disgod, on 03/31/2009, -0/+9Same here, and I've never heard of it either. I have to assume they saw this at some festival and are trying to pass it off as something normal people make regularly.
- mrgreenjeans, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9"...if I could wash the taste out of my mouth with a slice of that."
That's what she said. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+8Whoa. I love scrapple, but let's not get carried away.
- ihrtchoclate, on 03/31/2009, -0/+8i'm from california and i've never heard of it either. but it does sound good..
- quaxon, on 03/31/2009, -1/+9some, if not most, of the best food in the world comes from or is influenced by third world countries.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+7Right on. Scrapple is also one of my personal favorites when it's fried to perfection. Just don't read the ingredients LOL.
- mrgarci1, on 03/31/2009, -1/+8Dugg for scrapple. As my dad used to say, "Good scrapple always looks like you need to shave it before you eat it."
I've never touched the stuff - more of a pork roll fan, myself. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+7I think they were going for originals, not imports.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6This lady is shopping for 'em like a lobster in a tank...
http://tinyurl.com/ynjhkc - Wakkyweed, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6I don't know about that. I'd have to say Norwegian food is much worse than American. Have you ever tried Lutefisk?
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -1/+7Buried for mentioning PA diners, which do not exist. The diners are in Jersey.
- LowHz, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6Hey bobburn1, I read the rest of your comments in this thread. Shut up and stop being a dick.
- d3dm, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5That pepperoni roll looks suspiciously like a sausage kolache.
- sanguinekane, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5I'm calling shenanigans on the avocado pie. I've lived in CA my entire life, and though we eat a lot of avocado (cus its freaking delicious), I've never, ever eaten or even heard of avocado pie. Just because you ran into a particular dish at some offbeat food festival once doesn't make it a regional delicacy.
- Claverhouse, on 03/31/2009, -3/+8*a varying mixture of whipped fat, berries (including salmonberries and cloudberries), sugar and fish or meat (such as salmon, caribou and walrus tallow)*
*this local dish involves breading and deep-frying buffalo, boar or bear testicles*
*this twist on the traditional pie nestles a mixture of avocados, gelatin and sweetened condensed milk inside a graham cracker crust*
We often hear how awful English, Scottish and Irish food is compared to the American diet. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6I had scrapple for the first time last year. Fried scrapple and gravy on toast...essentially "***** on a shingle." It wasn't *too* bad, but I wouldn't want to eat it on a regular basis.
Also, I would LOVE to get my hands on a Horseshoe Sandwich. That looks damned good!
Lastly, you can get mountain oysters all over south Texas. The texture is like fried chicken livers. Tastes pretty good with some Ranch dressing or cream gravy. - plutonium28, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6Dugg for scrapple.
- latenightlab, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5The nastiness of rocky mountain oysters stuck after seeing Funny Farm as a kid and sadly hasn't left.
- TheBigBad, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5When it comes to pepperoni rolls. They are delicious.
- synergye, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5This is probably the first time a womens health article has been FP'd.
- wmtrader, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5
I haved lived in California my entire life and this is the first time I've heard of Avocado pie but Spam Musubi is great and I get it every time I go to Ono Hawaii BBQ. - sofinigan, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6some of the best food I've had is from travelling in third world countries
- masamunecyrus, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Anyone else have strange regional foods? I'm rather partial to spaghetti noodles in my chili, which is apparently called "Hoosier chili". I've recently found that pouring chili over rice for your carbs, instead, is also very delicious.
Also, apparently real Philadelphians use Cheez Whiz on their Philly Cheesesteaks? - Wakkyweed, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5Dugg for Mountain Oysters! We called them Calf Fries back in Texas, and they were a treat you only got about once a year. They're mildly chewy and have a flavor similar to sweetbreads with a little liver mixed in. Yum!
- JKount, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Some of these aren't that bad.
- ricker2005, on 03/31/2009, -2/+6I somehow doubt that American cuisine is the worst the planet has to offer.
- candre23, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5Buried for the omission of Pork Roll - king of the fried breakfast meats.
Also for referring to scrapple as "food". - TheBigBad, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Don't know what was up with that one. If you make them properly, the pepperoni is completely encased in bread.
- ricker2005, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5They had an entire Iron Chef America episode with offal. It's food, kid. Plenty of people eat it so you might as well get over it.
- Gareth321, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4I still find it gross, but to each their own. They eat cats in China.
- TheBadWolf, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Those pepperoni things look really good, actually. There's a Japanese restaurant here in Salt Lake City that serves Spam Musubi, I've got friends that swear by that stuff.
- ShadowofAres, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Have you ever been to America?
- brandita, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4Jersey....lolz
- phrstbrn, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4scrapple and apple butter == yum
- Wakkyweed, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3She seems rather delighted.
- rockytop9808, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3I'm from Virginia and we have pepperoni rolls everywhere.
My ex-girlfriend used to make them all the time. - nesagwa, on 03/31/2009, -2/+5Is scrapple really that regional? I know a lot of hunters that eat it every day down here in the south.
- DDRSkata, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3@Wakkyweed: There's a great Nothing Nice comic in which Blake and Fletcher are listening to a Swedish punk band and pondering what Swedish people have to complain about. It shows two kids in Sweden wearing band tees. One says to the other, "Lutefisk is revolting," and the other one says, "Then so am I!"
- mrhuberg, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4I feel bad for people that can't get scrapple. I like it sliced thick and mushy or thin and crispy, smothered in ketchup.
- Preclude, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3No Turduckin?
- candre23, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4These are regional FOODS. Lutefisk is for external use only.
- candre23, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Wiz steaks are excellent, but most shops in Philly give you the option or other cheeses if you prefer.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3What, no beef on weck? This list is ass.
