- ColonelJessup, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I thought the avocado was technically a fruit?
- LEOPiC, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0they ARE fruit, thing is pretty much nobody (except Brazilians) threat them as one
- skellener, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1But it's the "good" fat.
A whole medium avocado contains approximately 21 grams of fat, though most of it is monounsaturated fat. Avocados also have 60% more potassium than bananas. They are rich in B vitamins, as well as vitamin E and vitamin K.They have the highest fiber content of any fruit - including 75% insoluble and 25% soluble fiber. - Emma1989, on 05/21/2008, -0/+0Too much "good" fat is also not anymore good :)

- hellotyler, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I always suspected that Rachel Ray was high on protein.
- domataos, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6I'm not sure why they chose walnuts over almonds, almonds have the same level of fatty oils you need and if you're going to be eating lots of salmon the omega-3 would be less desirable than the almond oil.
- BurnTees, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2i THINK that almonds have more fat (but I'm not sure and i'm too lazy to look it up)
- sodade, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1nope - walnuts have more fat than almonds.
- Ikulus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Probably because they expect people to realistically rotate only one of the seven into their diet (if that).
So walnut was chosen as "best in show" of the nut category.

buried for dupe- ohmahgawd, on 05/13/2008, -3/+4It's one of the many types of articles journalists and writers recycle regularly to fill gaps, make it look like they did something, etc.
Along with the regular dustmite articles, the articles about candy safety every Halloween, and the painfully regular articles about allergies that pop up every spring, most, if not all of these types of articles, are complete wastes of space, that talk about things everyone knows, and aren't really important anyways.- fatrandy13, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2exactly why i buried it
- ohmahgawd, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1There's actually a few news sites I've found that, instead of writing a new article, just stamp a new date on the old ones. Why do these ***** things always pop up on digg, mailing lists, and conversations? Are people so bored that they have to keep talking about the same things every year?
- jerrycan, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2Fatrandy is fat.
- fatrandy13, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2how about pizza, tacos, burritos, cheesesteaks, and hamburgers?? thats more in line with my actual diet

Goji Berries
Maca
Spirulina
Coconut
Noni
Raw Cacao
Bee Pollen
Kale
Durian
Sea Veggies (Nori, Dulse, Wakami, Sea Lettuce, Kombu, etc)
Fermented Foods
Etc.. Etc..
Typical diet for the 5+ people living in our house. :)- Bukowsky, on 05/13/2008, -4/+2I am SOOO glad that somebody other than me knows what Goji Berries are.
- dwrecktion, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Don't forget yerba mate.
- Ellipsys, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Durian? Seriously? Where are you getting fresh Durian from? I didn't even think that stuff could be shipped out of southeast asia, because of the smell. If there's some way to get organic Durian in the states, I'd love to try the "God-fruit from the Tree of Knowledge"
- marktastic, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3They are usually pretty easy to find in any asian grocery store. I had luck in both Michigan and Colorado. They sell it frozen too
- flipper5311, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1but it is not fresh anymore. i love durian season in Malaysia. i can even eating only durian the whole day :D
- marktastic, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3They are usually pretty easy to find in any asian grocery store. I had luck in both Michigan and Colorado. They sell it frozen too
- iidestined, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1oh no! not Durian, the king of fruit. :run:
I'm sure it tastes great but I can't bring myself close enough to try it. - Hoogs, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2I have no idea what most of those things are. Probably a bad sign. I can, however, smell a Hot Pocket a mile away.
- Ellipsys, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7I'll give you a run down
Goji berries - High antioxident berries that come from the Himalayas. Put them on your cereal. They're kind of like super healthy raisins.
Maca - Root from central and south america, often powdered and sold as a supplement. Good for your wang, and its support systems
Spirulina - Blue-green Algae - don't worry, if its mixed into other things its tasteless. All around good for you.
Coconut - I'm sure you know what this is. Coconut is pretty much one of the healthiest oils there is, and has some very unique compounds
Noni - Juice from a Pacific berry. Good for you overalll.
Raw Cacao - This is what chocolate was before Hershey's got a hold of it.
Bee Pollen - Just what it sounds like.. I suggest buying raw, unfiltered honey, without the healthy stuff strained out. You can also buy pollen as a supplement.
Kale - Leafy vegetable in the cabbage family. Acquired taste, but good for you.
Durian - Southeast Asian "King of All Fruits" or "God Fruit from the Tree of Knowledge". Smells HORRIBLE, but supposedly tastes heavenly. Also has some of the most unique compounds of any fruit in nature, and the strange property of raising one's body temperature. As I mentioned above, I've never eaten a fresh one, and they're hard to find for export. Even Asian grocery stores around me don't seem to have them (fresh, anyway), but if you get the chance, give it a try!
Sea Veggies - This is what your sushi is rolled in. More or less. Acquired taste, eating it by itself. High in iodine, which will help a lot of Americans lose weight.
Fermented foods - I know what you're thinking. No. Beer doesn't count.- Hoogs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Wow, well thank you for that rundown. Sounds like it might be quite expensive to eat healthy, but I'll give some of those a try.
- Ellipsys, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3I admit it is expensive to eat healthy sometimes, but I can tell that it is really worth it. Exotic foods like some of the ones mentioned above can be expensive, but one thing you can do that's good for your health without spending a fortune is replacing the conventional foodstuffs you buy with USDA certified Organic ones. Look on the side of that hot pockets box - I bet you'll see a slew of things with "chemical" names. By contrast, there are even "healthy" hot-pocket like foods that are Organic - these won't have any of the artificial chemical preservatives, dyes, or additives that the conventional ones do. To save money, try buying your groceries from a small Organic co-op or market - you'll get the same things here, but for cheaper prices than say Whole Foods or Trader Joes. Of course, you'll sometimes have to go to Whole Foods for something like fresh wild caught fish - a local market wont' have the means to get Alaskan King Salmon imported. Just switching from conventional to USDA Organic is a great step towards healthier living. I admit it does have a bit of a cost to it, but if you shop smart you can do so on a budget (be aware of "non organic" brands in a place like Whole Foods. Those are there primarily as a halo effect issue). Just about everyone I know that has gotten away (mostly) from a "conventional" grocery store has had improvements in their health and energy level. Its amazing how much "non-food" stuff is in everyday groceries!
- Hoogs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Thanks for all the info. Really appreciate it.
- ScottMitchell, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4My general rule of thumb is if I have trouble pronouncing the ingredients on processed food, I pass it up for something else.
- Hoogs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Wow, well thank you for that rundown. Sounds like it might be quite expensive to eat healthy, but I'll give some of those a try.
- Ellipsys, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7I'll give you a run down
- Ikulus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Where do you live?
- darkthoughts, on 05/13/2008, -6/+0Chocolate & Honey are really the only "superfoods" that made the list. And the cacao beans are really the best quality of nutrition. Raw chocolate is #1 in Magnesium and Chromium. What are two major mineral deficiencies in America today?

- ebmnoize, on 05/13/2008, -0/+47The whole text, [i hate these "The next photo will load in [10] seconds" and the bloody clikity clikkity click click in to oblivion]
1. Spinach
2. Walnuts
3. Honey
4. Salmon
5. Oats
6. Dark Chocolate
7. Blueberries
1. Spinach
Popeye was right: Spinach should be part of your diet. It's low in calories and high in nutrients. Research has shown that spinach aids in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, some cancers and cardiovascular disease. While you can always have a spinach salad or a side of the greens hot, try this recipe for a different take on the superfood:
Spinach and Jack Cheese Bread Pudding Recipe
2. Walnuts
Nuts are an excellent source of protein, fiber and vitamin E. Walnuts are the only nuts that contain a significant amount of omega-3s, and are known for their high antioxidant activity. Eat them by the handful, toss them on salads or try this delicious recipe:
Sweet Potato Casserole
3. Honey
Honey isn't just for tea. You've probably relied on honey in the past to soothe an aching throat, but did you know it has been used to treat wounds and gastrointestinal problems? Honey acts as an antioxidant, a substance that can prevent the effects of free radicals, which we're exposed to from environmental toxins such as tobacco smoke or radiation and which can contribute to disease. Honey also contains oligosaccharides, which increase the number of good bacteria in the colon. The color of honey is relevant: the darker the honey the more antioxidants it contains..
4. Salmon
Salmon is a tasty fish that's chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial fats that can improve heart health. Salmon is also protein rich. Choose wild over farmed salmon, which has been shown to contain elevated levels of contaminants and is artificially colored.
Looking for an easy and delicious salmon recipe? Try this one:
5. Oats
Ten years ago, the FDA approved a label publicizing the association between a diet high in oat fiber and the reduction of cholesterol. Further research has proven this claim to be true: The fiber in oats lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, or the bad type of cholesterol. With every 1 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol, heart-disease risk is lowered 1 to 3 percent. Oats also contain plant chemicals that have antioxidant properties.
6. Dark Chocolate
The good news: Dark chocolate is a potent antioxidant and can help reduce blood pressure. The potentially bad news: You should still keep your daily chocolate intake low, due to the fat and calories. Remember that darker is better because processing strips chocolate of some of its health benefits.
For a little temptation, check out these organic and fair trade chocolates:
7. Blueberries
Sweet blueberries don't just make your smoothies and cereal taste better; they contain high levels of antioxidants. Some research has shown blueberries can slow degenerative diseases associated with aging and improve motor skills. Still other studies have shown the fruit to improve urinary tract health.- plopper, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1Buried for plagiarizing!
- branndon, on 05/13/2008, -4/+3Another "X Super Foods!" article?
- ChicagoM, on 05/13/2008, -5/+4Good grief. Please define health boost. Who is this author, how is she a nutrition specialist and why are we believing this crapola? We could put any food in this list and spin it to provide a health boost.
"Bacon is a fine source of salt needed for exercise, fat for healthy hair and protein for muscles." "Swamp gas clears the nasal passages and provides a healthy dose of leaberglubin required for healthy rectal function."
Interesting that the author chooses honey for anti-oxidants rather than say, strawberries. Also interesting the author doesn't note that eating honey has the same effects on your body as eating sugar - no difference. Thank you for further confusing nutrition. - thoriphes, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Hm, broccoli should've made that list.
- destro713, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4Chocloate is a "superfood." Riiiiiiight. This was written for housewives.
- Wolfsoap, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Most of the comments has more text than the blurb about the food.
And they managed to get all the comments on one page.

- monsterette, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2...great information and suggestions on foods and vitamins....
- fuzzynyanko, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Wow. Some of those actually look tasty
- fixyourthinking, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1This list is spread out over 8 pages so you have to view advertisements. The list is:
Spinach
Walnuts
Salmon - should have been more specific and said herb roasted
Blueberries
Oats
Dark Chocolate - should have been more specific and said carab
Honey - should have been more specific with which flower the honey should come from
This is a waste of time as organized and is too brief and kinda something we already knew. - trevorbadly, on 05/13/2008, -4/+1Eating all these vegetables takes so much time and effort. Step into the future by drinking 23 superfruits in 1 drink at http://www.drinkjus.com and then get all your food by taking a pill with your drink. Nah! I'll stick to my usual diet of Mountain Dew and frozen pizza
- Tweekster, on 05/13/2008, -2/+0Eggs and raw milk should be on that list.
- STPZ, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0Nice Dunkin Donuts ad.....health food??
- charman2k6, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Stories like this are why I like digg so much. These are things that I would not go and seach for, but would read if brought to my attention. It's a shame that digg is so congested with Anti/Pro-Obama and Anti/Pro-Hilary non-sense. Honestly I could careless if Hilary shows her tax form.
- skellener, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1You can turn off political or election 2008 news if you want to in your preferences.

- nexus37, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Everyone knows that Funyuns and Mountain Dew is the food of the gods. This ***** will power you through any low point in your life. Pretty super to me AND it doesn't get stuck to your front teeth (bonus!).
- insonh, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1HEY WHAT ABOUT DONUTS?
according to Hommer Simpson: AHHH! Donuts, is there anything they can't do! - chochazel, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Most of them are called superfoods because they contain antioxidants despite the fact that it's a notorious nutritional myth that these do any good at all - the modern day miracle cure snake oil.

|You name it, if it's an antioxidant, we'll swallow it by the bucket-load. According to some estimates around half the adults in the US take antioxidant pills daily in the belief they promote good health and stave off disease. We have become antioxidant devotees. But are they doing us any good? Evidence gathered over the past few years shows that at best, antioxidant supplements do little or nothing to benefit our health. At worst, they may even have the opposite effect, promoting the very problems they are supposed to stamp out." - fandyboy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2They not "Super", they're just ***** food!!!
- diggydougie, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Salmon should be off the list. It may be good for you, but Salmon are nearly extinct right now. I was shocked to read "Choose wild over farmed salmon" At least farmed salmon are keeping the species alive.

it should make for an interesting morning after my coffee! - wxman2001, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Chia seeds and hemp seeds should be in there...Chia seeds have high fiber, protein, all of the omega fatty acids,(in higher proportion than salmon, which has levels of mercury in it) anti-oxidants, and even slow the absorption of carbs....good for people with blood sugar problems and people trying to lose weight. Chia seeds even have vitamin C! Hemp seeds have similar properties, minus the vitamin C but are even higher in protein content...in fact, poud for pound, hemp seeds have the highest protein of any plant food.
- Skiwoman, on 05/17/2008, -0/+0I loved that recipe "Spinach and Jack Cheese Bread Pudding".

Healthy and delicious! - luiyuming, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0Fairly good list but how about tomatoes, red peppers, avocados....or broccoli.....?
- Aeron, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1I've been looking at lists of all the different nutrients that our bodies like, and which foods contain them. Change it to suit yourself, but I came up with this, and it works well for me:
For breakfast have some kind of healthy cereal, like Vector, with slices of banana, strawberries, and blueberries, with skim milk.
For lunch make a sandwich with whole grain bread, lettuce, cheese, some kind of fish and whatever else you want in it.
For a snack get one of those bags of mixed nuts, with peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds etc. Drink water, or some healthy drink like Sobe, or green tea. Drink Grapefruit Juice and Orange Juice, not from concentrate.
With whatever dinner you want, include an egg, cooked broccoli, cooked cauliflower, cooked carrots. Have yogurt for dessert, the kind that says it has 'active bacteria culture' in it.
Eat whatever junk food you want in moderation.
Also go for a 20min walk, or do something active outside, every single day. Get enough sleep. Always either go to bed early or sleep in. Your body will have everything it needs to feel damn good. - cleansecolon, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0Easy to remember and to the point. Thanks for sharing this one!
