7 Strange and Different Restaurants (+PICS)
mentalfloss.com — Opening a new restaurant is risky. 60% of new restaurants close or change ownership within three years. One way to make a restaurant stand out from the crowd is to have a theme, and the wackier the better. It may be as simple as putting costumes on the waiters and decorating the walls, or it may be an entirely new concept...

- chandan333, on 05/23/2008, -0/+26"In the sky" and "under the water" Dinner would be something i would like to try.
And the last one "in the dark" dinner sounds interesting too.- Haoie, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0There are a few underwater [in the strictest sense of the word] restaurants around the world, actually.
Don't expect them to have a $10 buffet, though. - kaleesh, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1wasn't there a CSI episode with the dinner in the dark?
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Alex Albrecht ate at one of those dark restaraunts. He spent a few minutes talking about it in a recent Diggnation. If I recall correctly, he didn't like it very much. I'm not saying his opinion is the most important thing in the world, but at least it's some feedback from a person who tried it.
- gkwillie, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I've eaten at 'O Noir', the Montreal version of those dark restaurants. Very unique experience, I don't think we realize how important smell is to eating, and I left with a newfound appreciation for my nose.
- gkwillie, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I've eaten at 'O Noir', the Montreal version of those dark restaurants. Very tasty- surprisingly so. I left with a newfound appreciation for how important smells and textures are for the enjoyment of food. Definitely something worth trying at least once.

- dcmadmav, on 05/23/2008, -1/+23What if you need to take a leak in the sky...
- diskit, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Forget that, what if they got your order wrong?
- domokunt, on 05/23/2008, -0/+10It rains.
- synyster, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1what happen if you want to go to toilet?
- sonnygill, on 05/23/2008, -0/+5So the Marton Theme Restaurant, are the toilets usable or just for show?
- dleesgeetar, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3they should try eating on an eastern style toilet :)
- Palscience1, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3Once I saw one in an Ice House. Icey Restuarant
- diskit, on 05/23/2008, -1/+23Oh wow, a 7 item list that's all on one page?
Are you feeling okay Digg?
Are you running a fever or something?- zspitfire04, on 05/23/2008, -1/+1This is MrBabyMan, you shouldn't be asking digg.
- ThankTheCheese, on 05/23/2008, -2/+1The "In the toilet" one is ridiculous!
It reminds me of an experiment shown on the documentary Human Nature where they gave participants a bowl of soup, then took out a toilet brush, still in its packaging. They took off the packaging, demonstrating it was brand new and never used, then dipped it into the soup. Most people (myself included) would refuse to eat the soup, even though rationally we understand it is perfectly sanitary.
The thought of eating from a urinal bowl -- no matter how much detergent they use -- makes me want to throw up.- sat0shi, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Not eating the soup after a brand new toilet brush was dipped into it is not human nature... That's just stupid.
On second thought, I guess it is human nature... Nevermind.- SixOrSoPapers, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0It is not necessarily stupid. There are lot of brand new things that if they were dipped into my food I wouldn't eat it. What incentive does a toilet brush manufacturer have to sterilize/clean his product to food healthy standards before shipping? There could easily be residue from the manufacturing process that would be toxic if ingested.

- Strungout, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2I like the guy's reaction as the waiter with a condom over his head walks by
- kyyv, on 05/23/2008, -2/+0Soylent Green is people!
- IkariGendou, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0Still no Milliway's, though... :)
- Tyviris, on 05/23/2008, -1/+0Le Noir sounds incredibly tricky, must be a messy experience with the patrons grabbing around in the dark.
- Twenty, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Haha, I can't imagine the dishes are too complex, you wouldn't be able to deal otherwise. That the wait staff is blind is really interesting! I bet it's a cool hypersensory epxerience. Though I do wonder how they handle the drinks...
- JenniferKme, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0wow, love all that wacky but maybe messy experience. had one with no lights in paris. funny...lot of accidents!!
- jerryterhorst, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1theres also Nocti Vagus in Berlin, which does the same thing as Le Noir. ive always been curious how exactly it's carried out.
- 9bpm9, on 05/23/2008, -3/+3Who the hell wants to eat in the dark?
- jimmick, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1That blog entry about Dans Le Noir? is great
http://tanyastories.blogspot.com/2006/04/dans-le-n ...
Too bad it's loud as all hell - rhinoglam, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0Heres a crazy concept for a restaurant - serve great food!
- Emma1989, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0funny - in parts very strange. For example the restaurant in Thailand...a bit sarcastic!
- chewy5000, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Sushi Train ftw!
- Aroundtheworls, on 05/23/2008, -0/+7I've eaten at Cabbages and Condoms a few times before. Quite an interesting place with it's condom-decorated themes but what makes it more unusual is the restaurant is attached to an abortion clinic.
The food there is great but I sure hope there are no slip-ups with the ingredients... - edebolt, on 05/23/2008, -0/+8Here is my concept for a soup restaurant... The diners get to sit in big bowls of soup while eating soup out of smaller bowls... How cool would that be???
- D4rkDrago0n, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2"the wait staff is blind"
- ogermino, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1So even if the kitchen were lit, you have no assurance that what they bring you is fully cooked, or even food.
- colasrtney, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1The entrance to my restaurant would be the mouth of a burger. Once you are eaten by the burger at the burger-mouth of the restaurant you enter the burger stomach where you eat what burgers eat.. lesser sandwiches. Burgers. Also, I can't wait for Choke to come out.
- rmetzger, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I just went to one in Bangkok where you walk around with a shopping cart and pick the seafood you want off ice, just as if you were in a fish market. Then once you check out you tell the chefs how you want them to cook it. Their motto is "if it swims we have it" - they have 100s of kinds of seafood. A must if you are in Thailand.
- nosebuds, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0Any North American folk interested in the Noir blind-dining concept can try it out a little closer to home - there are Noir spots in both Los Angeles and Montreal.
- ogermino, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Dinner in the sky sounds cool; I just hope the engineers behind it were rigorous in their work. The Dans le Noir? would also be a fun and interesting experience, sorta like a blind taste test. Too bad I didn't know about these when I was in Western Europe. Oh well, probably too expensive for the budget I had anyway.
- digjam, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I once saw le noir featured in Travel channel, its totally dark inside and you just taste the food as they mentioned. That really sounds a very good idea.
- popfrogs, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3One place I'd love to visit is http://www.ninjaakasaka.com/. Yes, a restaurant with ninjas, drawbridges, exploding menus, the works.
- endersadvocate, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1its like 77-300 dollars per person, they damn well better have exploding menus
- JustFlyAKite, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0I had a friend who ate at the "Red Guard" restaurant in China and she said that the food wasn't all that great, but her newly adopted sister, Piper, loved the food because she was used to the interesting chinese foods that they served.
- SwingCorey, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Where the Heart Attack Grill? Why isn't it on this list?
http://www.heartattackgrill.com/
It's theme stands out so much, it was featured on Dateline. - gwf28, on 05/24/2008, -1/+0What a great list of weird restaurants. I love this discussion board.
