- Kardde, on 10/22/2009, -1/+17Am I the only American that loves Vegemite?
I'm so lonely. And cold. And there are wolves after me. - DarkSenay, on 10/22/2009, -0/+16WTF, no Tim Tams or Meatpies?!
Worthless article... - TrendyTim, on 10/21/2009, -0/+14Hmm, i would only call 2 of those foods (The curry and the anzacs), the others are more condimenty.
How can you have a top anything of australia without mentioning vegemite (the original not the spin off) and although it can be classified its own food group, i woudl say a Vegemite and cheese sandwich would be one of quintessential aussie foods (and the meat pie of course) - ejbiederman, on 10/22/2009, -1/+14bundaberg ginger beer. incredible stuff! and tim tams.
- Wakkyweed, on 10/22/2009, -0/+11When I was in Australia I thought the best thing they had was their Aussie-style burgers.
Aussie burgers have all sorts of weird crap on them, like pineapple, beets, grilled onions, and a fried egg. It sounds crazy, but it tastes awesome. - rynTAU, on 10/22/2009, -0/+11is it just me or does it seem odd that most of these are ingredients.. not really 'food' ?
- doctordbx, on 10/22/2009, -1/+11Oh god yes. I've been in the Middle East for 4 years... and I miss the good Aussie burger.
Meat Pattie, Bacon, Mushrooms, Eggs, Fried Onions, Beetroot, cheese, lettuce, tomato - mmmmm... droool.
Some people put pineapple on them, but science has proven their taste buds are in their arse. - rx8geek, on 10/22/2009, -0/+10Vegemite rocks but i think its definitely a flavour you really need to grow up with eating to enjoy.
What gave you the idea we need to realize it as if we didnt already?? We've known it a long while... and its precisely the reason we get you foreigners to eat it, the reactions are priceless :D - doctordbx, on 10/22/2009, -1/+9***** list to be honest. Since when has curry been an Australian staple? Since never.

- Wakkyweed, on 10/22/2009, -1/+7Another American that loves Vegemite here! I have it for breakfast almost every day. My old Aussie girlfriend got me hooked on it.
- inactive, on 10/21/2009, -0/+6#6 isn't even Australian by the articles own admission
- skate3214, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Bundaberg ginger beer FTW!
- superjono, on 10/23/2009, -0/+6Terrible list. I would have said -
1. Pavlova
2. Lamingtons
3. Kangaroo Steak
4. Vegemite
5. Tim Tams
6. Farmer's Union Iced Coffee
I heard once that South Australia is one of the only places in the world where there's a drink that sells more than Coca Cola. Farmer's Union Iced Coffee is it. - moo2u2, on 10/23/2009, -0/+5Lamingtons FTW!
- Lochie, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5A works burger, hells yeah
- ShoggothDreams, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5If this is about "Australian Foods", why is it almost exclusively "Australian BRANDS", with the exception of Anzac Biscuits.
- inactive, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5The thing about vegemite is that it actually tastes quite like Guiness beer. I ***** you not. Kind of makes sense, since the original Marmite (very similar product) was derived from leftover brewers yeast, and Guiness is quite a heavy beer. Vegemite is just teh Australian marmte (Marmite is better though, especially New Zealand Marmite. Has a more malty flavour and is much less harsh)
Go have a Guiness. Then try a /tiny/ amount of vegemite.
The mistake most people have is treating the ***** like it's peanut butter or something. You only need a very small amount. and, like beer, it an acquired bitter yeasty taste. - eTronicGaming, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5No Meat Pies? :'(
Those things were all I ate in Australia when I went there.
That and Kangaroo Steak.... yummmmmmm =] - insidius, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Wait a minute, what do americans have on their burgers then?
I always get the lot.
Lettuce
Onion
Cheese
Bacon
Fried Egg
PineApple
Beetroot
Man, pity its 8 AM in the morning I could go a burger. - skate3214, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4"And, to this day, no one seems to find it odd that cocktail sausages are sold in nearly every shop under the name "little boys.""
The *****.... Where in Australia does this fella live, I've never seen them called little boys, and they pretty much only sell them in supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles etc... - Gizza, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3I was actually surprised when travelling to find that Meat Pies are actually unique to Australia. I knew that Meat Pies were a great Aussie food, but wasn't aware that a mere mention of such an item elsewhere in the world would get you blank, confused or disgusted looks.
- aristideau, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Before McDonalds came to my home town there was a US burger chain called Hartees and they had the best hamburgers. For some reason they went bust and McDonalds took over the building. I had heard that McDonalds was a more popular chain in the US and was looking forward to trying their burgers. However I nearly gagged after my first bite, like WTF pickles, mustard, EEWWW. I though to myself these guys will go bust in 6 months. Outside of McDonalds you will never see pickles and mustard in any Australian burgers.
To this day, you can still see a large number of Australians pick apart their burgers and throw away the pickles. - ShoggothDreams, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Count me in, too! Love it on spread thinly on toast with Neufchatel in the morning, to spruce up a Chip Butty, or just a bit to liven up a soup.
For the record, every American eats some form of "Vegemite" almost daily. Look on 90% of the processed foods, you will see some form of "yeast extract. Guess what.... It's what brings out that meaty, or cheesey, or just plain "savory" taste in so many foods. - Wazzog, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3so true, got me wanting almost everything thing on that list right now.
- hongy_r, on 10/22/2009, -1/+3This list is ridiculous and a third of the items are some type of olive oil.
Tim Tams and South Melbourne market Dim Sims all you need to know about. You won't like Vegemite if you weren't exposed to it in the first 6 months of your life. - shanec1980, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2No Kangaroo? The Other red meat.
- skate3214, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Haha everyone hates that name so much.
- Idonteven, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2The pictures in this article really make the food stand out and seem more interesting.
Wait a second.. - santiago1, on 10/22/2009, -1/+3 Both of you better get running! I hear the wolves closing in fast!
- Wakkyweed, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2The standard American burger is this:
Lettuce
Raw onion
Dill pickle chips
Tomato slice
American cheese
Any combination of ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.
On our specialty burgers we often add any combination of these ingredients:
Grilled onions
Swiss cheese
Mushrooms
Bacon
Cheddar
Chili
Jalapeno peppers - inactive, on 10/22/2009, -1/+3Where's the bratwurst and sauerkraut?
- bobsbones, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Peach Melba.
Moreton Bay Bug. Better than lobster any day. - Oztog, on 10/23/2009, -1/+3Dugg for liking Vegemite, though I'm somehow doubting your claim to having a girlfriend.
- Gizza, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2I worked at a McDonalds while at uni. An I honestly believe that had we made the burgers without pickle by default, we would have had way less people asking for the burgers with pickle than we had people asking for them without.
We also would have had a lot less pickles races down the dinning room windows. - Vados, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2realaussiefood.blogspot.com
- Vados, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Pavlova is originally from New Zealand.
- Gizza, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Tim Tams for sure. Best chocolate biscuit in the world.
- picnicideas, on 11/22/2009, -0/+1Kangeroo steaks might be tasty ,but ui hate thinking of killing these animals.
- askantik, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Yeah, same here. I was looking for dishes or snacks...
- nepidae, on 10/22/2009, -2/+3*worth trying*
- Oztog, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1I forgot the Hamburger with "THE LOT"
- scooterbaga, on 10/22/2009, -1/+2Yes, we're all better off with less options.
- SooperSonic, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Funny that this article appears in The Atlantic. I thought Australia only touched the Indian & Pacific.
- Jarvs, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1I do. Put it on some toast and there is nothing better!
- Wakkyweed, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Just ask my second wife about my Aussie ex-girlfriend. She'll give you an earful.
- Gizza, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1It's called CheesyBite now. And they are getting sued by Pizza Hut because they apparently already have that trademarked. I'm surprised at how stupid Kraft is.
- bobsbones, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Mmm. Vegemite on hot, buttery toast. Brilliant with a cup of coffee first in the morn. I am an U.K. expat. and even I can appreciate the goodness of Vegemite.
But not that unnamed and unnameable new ***** with cheese which I hope they get rid of ASAP. - Frostek, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1The UK's selection of curries is far superior.
