Non-essential nutrients can still have a significant impact on health, whether beneficial or toxic. For example, most dietary fiber is not absorbed by the human digestive tract, but is important in digestion and absorption of otherwise harmful substances. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -2/+10… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … ______

Most cereals have a decent amount of sugar added to them. Eat oats for breakfast if you want something quick - tasty, and no sugar added! - , or cook eggs and whole wheat toast, and have an apple with it.
I am a very healthy eater. Fiber isn't usually up there influencing what I eat when I decide to eat. Turns out that if you "fix" your diet, you will be getting more than enough fiber to suit your daily needs. For starters, here is what entails fixing your diet:
1.) Eat a source of fat, carbohydrate, and protein with every meal. I am personally doing a 40-30-30 split (40% calories comes from carbs, 30% comes from fat, 30% comes from protein.) There are a quite a few deviations from this but in all of them you are getting significant calories from each of those 3 groups.
2.) Everything that you eat should be a "whole food" - not processed! A whole food can be thought of as a food as close to its original form as possible. If it comes out of a can or box - don't eat it!
3.) Eat 5-6 small meals a day.
4.) Eat a fruit or vegetable with every meal.
Eating whole foods will get you *****-tons of fiber. Things I eat for breakfast that have fiber include an ounce of peanuts, an apple, and 3/8 cup oats. That is about 8 grams of fiber right there. I eat 4-5 other meals a day and they are usually the same thing (I'm a college student so I cook about 9 pounds of food at once and eat it throughout the week since I don't have a lot of time for cooking). 2 oz (uncooked) whole wheat spaghetti (6g fiber), 4 oz chicken breast, tomato sauce (3g fiber), and carrots (2g fiber). There's another 11g fiber. When I eat 5 meals a day I'm getting 50g fiber, 6 meals is about 60g.
I used to eat pretty unhealthy (frozen pizzas, crackers, cheese sticks, fried foods, whatever came to mind), but I changed when I took up a lifting program. I wanted to maximize my results by eating right, and it became motivation for eating right (YOU HAVE TO HAVE MOTIVATION, OTHERWISE YOU WILL FALL BACK INTO YOUR OLD HABITS). I started off with this program: http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-st ... . That site is also a great resource for diet tips, and supports the 4 points I made above. I also got this information from reading Precision Nutrition. - Wreckage, on 03/31/2009, -2/+9Whiskey is made with grains, so I'm sure that I am getting plenty of fiber.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drC1KXIDdow - KarateMedia, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Some specific brands you can buy:
Mission High Fiber Toritllas have 21g of fiber in each tortilla. (They might also be called "Carb Balance"). Soft, good texture - good for sandwich wraps or burritos.
Nature's Own Double Fiber Wheat Bread has 5g of fiber in each slice - 10g for a sandwich, of course. Just used these to make French Toast on Sunday.
Trader Joes has a high fiber cereal I like - Golden Morning something or another. 10g of fiber per cup, and it's nice and sweet. Makes a good end of the night snack instead of typical sweet junk food.
You can really get your fiber in easily without even noticing it with some of these products. (and no, I'm not a shill for any of these companies - I just like getting my fiber) - graderguy, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3we are stealing your interwebs.
- WraTH017, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4You know, nutrition is important. More important than XKCD or a mountain goat photo. If it doesn't interest you, don't read it, don't comment on it. It's really quite simple.

- razorc03, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3what if I you have IBS?
For IBS people, fiber = death - sugablonde, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3looks like you just have to be careful where you get the fiber from:
http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber2.asp - Anand999, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Huh? For IBS, getting fiber helps, not hurts. Fiber absorbs water which makes your stool bulkier and easier to pass.
- meninostongue, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Dugg for the Mission tortillas. They are better than the refined wheat tortillas from most other brands.
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Read the article, do the opposite
- KarateMedia, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Hey, my mother-in-law just joined Facebook - I wouldn't be surprised if she found her way to digg, too.
That would explain the goatse decal on the back of her minivan, now that I think about it... - Anand999, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Those Mission tortillas are good stuff. They're relatively heavy on calories (I think about 200 per tortilla) but that's still better than a regular white tortilla of the same size.
That Nature's Own bread is good stuff as well. If I remember right, each slice only had about 5 net grams of carbs, which makes it a great choice for those trying to go with a low carb diet. Unlike most of the breads on the bread aisle that say "low carb" on them, this stuff looks, feels, and tastes just like normal bread. All of the breads I've tried that say "low carb" on the package taste and feel like foam.
Anyway, most nights I make a smoothie with non-fat yogurt, 1 or 2 tablespoons of flax seed meal, and several frozen strawberries (typically frozen berries are cheaper than fresh ones) along with some Splenda and a little milk. It's a nice big helping of both fiber and protein to get you through the night and help with a nice bowel movement in the morning. - wertach, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2I make Grand Marnier apple pie, get my fiber and my Alcohol together. - DirtPile, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2I'll let my panda friends know.
- jjason1985, on 03/31/2009, -2/+4The cereal recommendation is totally bogus. And switching from white to whole wheat/brown products is only a tiny little help. The glycemic index is nearly the same, just with a gram or two more fiber. How about people start eating some vegitables! Green leafy vegetables are a great source of fiber. Then add some protein and your set. Following this article's advice will leave you fat and bloated.
- jaymzdean, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1But you're missing the point.
It's not, are people stupid, because there are lawyers, cpa's, software gurus, etc...who just can't grasp that the starch is there - JUST because it's NOT LISTED on the box like everything else.
They question seems to be..why not just list the starch? - inactive, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1I think that more fiber like from apples, beans, and whole grain breads also stave off hunger. They work.
http://www.acai-berry-free-trials.info - AddiX, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Fiber makes you POOP!

Are people so stupid they can't figure that out? - tooker, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1and it says that in the article...
FTA:
"Fiber, in basic terms, is the indigestible parts of plant foods." - jaymzdean, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1All carbohydrates are made from sugar.
Sugar is sugar.
Starch is sugar and is digested, beginning in the mouth (amylase), in a matter of minutes.
Fiber is also sugar, but humans have little ability to digest fiber. It's main purpose in a healthy diet is to act as a mechanical inhibitor to the absorption of sugar from the alimentary canal into the bloodstream.
One gram of fiber can inhibit (slow down) the absorption of 1 gram of sugar.
So if you are consuming 4 grams of fiber with 4 grams of sugar, you're good.
But if you're consuming 4 grams of fiber with 23 grams of sugar, well...19 grams of that sugar is uninhibited...yes, even if it enters your pie-hole as starch...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drC1KXIDdow - jaymzdean, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Wrong, starch is glucose.
- javajoba, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1No mention of water? Water & fiber are like Amos & Andy, Butch Cassity & the Sundance Kid, or milk & cookies.
