- yanksn6, on 08/29/2008, -0/+195. Food-shop with a full stomach. This is so true I had to train my self to go food shopping after diner instead of after work. In doing so I buy much healthier food instead of the quick fix hungry man or anything you can pop in the microwave.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+15Of course, the real trick is eating healthy on a budget. I know, I know, people are always saying that it doesn't cost much, but I mean, let's face it - it's really hard to beat that $2 crate of ramen when it comes to shopping on a budget.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+10Reader's Digest is so full of ***** sometimes. 25 SECRET shopping tips and the first one is to buy fresh food?
How'd they manage to keep that one to themselves for so long... - jarjarwang, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7They have frozen veggies and canned beans. Find a way to combine those, and you are on your way.
- dragnonfly310, on 08/30/2008, -1/+7I dare anyone to attempt to purchase anything healthy in the south US, namely Mississippi and Alabama. There's a reason we're the fattest 2 states in the USA....
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6As long as you have two functioning kidneys and drink plenty of water, sodium is A-OK.
- tito13kfm, on 08/30/2008, -2/+81 serving of ramen noodles provide over 1000% of your daily recommended allowance of sodium. It's 10x as good as what the doctors recommend, it's super healthy!
- SilverBlade2k, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5I hear of a news or magazine article along these lines once every few months, and yet people are still overweight and still buying *****.
There is no point in having these articles around if they all fall on deaf ears...or blind eyes.
But I agree with this article. But when it comes to shopping, (usually), budget comes before health choices, and health choices are often more expensive then the ***** choices. - klick37, on 08/30/2008, -2/+7Secret?
- ThunderDigger, on 08/30/2008, -1/+5This is actually much more difficult, especially for very active people. You must be very knowledgeable in order to properly balance your protein and cards. You must also look harder for sources of iron and vitamin D.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4We're adapted for an omnivorous diet.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4I see you've bought into the "organic food" movement hook, line, and sinker. I'm sure organic farmers love gullible people like you. Of course if all food was organic, a third of people would have to go hungry. Are you volunteering to be in that third?
My advice: buy SUSTAINABLE food that's not based on "natural is always better!" hype and *****. - SuburbianMike, on 08/30/2008, -4/+726.Talk to the hot MILF in the Produce Isle.
- dragnonfly310, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4Thanks for the links. :)
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3sodium is salt. salt intake is great as long as you drink plenty of water to flush the excess out of the body. the body needs salt to create electrical connections in the body so we can move and function, that's we crave salt.
- jarjarwang, on 08/30/2008, -3/+6"Orange juice, although quite healthy, often has 20 grams of sugar in the average 8-ounce glass. Instead, try guava juice."
Guava? Why drink juice at all if you have to drink guava juice... I'd rather grab the new 64 calorie MGD Light on my way out the door. - riptor666, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Those who eat healthy are those that can afford healthy foods. Hence why being thin is more attractive now as it is associated with wealth.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -5/+71. If it tastes good, it is bad for you. Don't buy it.
- ttam, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2There is nothing wrong with sugar and butter
- JoeMondo, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2You can't be serious. There's plenty of access to good produce in Mississippi and Alabama. There's access to whole grains.
- moisture, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1"eat food, mostly plants, and not too much". michael pollan says it all in his new book "in defense of food, an eater's manifesto".
the operative word in that sentence is "food". geno's pizza rolls are not food. Go-Gurt is not food. bread can be food, but you need to choice wisely. another way he puts is that is brilliant is that "if your great-grandmother would not have recognize it as food, don't eat it." - cyrix, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1No. Not really. A lot of them are BS for numerous vegetable items and other things.
Take Peas for example. Unless you get them and use them relatively quickly from the time they are picked you lose a lot of nutrients and such. To be honest, in most cases frozen Peas are more healthy than fresh ones since most "fresh" picked peas are days old, you just don't know it, while with frozen peas the "good" stuff if trapped within relatively quickly time standards since they're frozen fairly fast after being picked. (thank you Alton Brown.)
The article means well, but they really need to dive in deeper and give a hell of a lot of more information. - ap44, on 08/30/2008, -1/+2Lots of fruits taste so damn good, so according to that logic, they're bad for me?

- fitzal77, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Perhaps you're familiar with the concept of a joke?
- ieee, on 08/30/2008, -4/+5I've been a vegan for 13 years. In my honest opinion, it isn't difficult and you don't have to learn that much. As far as nutrition education goes you only need to read one good starter kit or one good nutrition book.

- th3heretic, on 08/30/2008, -3/+3Im eating a Pizza that has bacon on it, ***** health.
- minimalpear, on 08/30/2008, -0/+0Yeah, it's going to cost you more to eat healthily, but isn't it worth it? And, in the long run, don't you think your doctor and insurance bills will be cheaper? Beans and grains are very inexpensive. Meat will cost more, but if a person can learn not to center their entire meal around a big hunk of meat, then a little can go a long way. Eggs are also great. If you're going to spend money anywhere, do it on fresh, organic produce. Or at least buy frozen. In my own experience, I find that most people who complain about the cost of eating well are comparing an organic frozen pizza to a regular one. Don't buy the freakin' frozen pizza at all! Get reacquainted with your kitchen!

- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -2/+1There's plenty of healthy food in the South, it's just that non-healthy stuff is almost always much more delicious.
- ShoggothDreams, on 08/30/2008, -2/+1Just wish it had been hosted by a less extremist magazine. As a kid I loved reading the humour sections. Now as an adult, I read the actual articles and have to throw it away from me in horror.... Worst offender is usually their "It's Outrageous".

lol - minimalpear, on 08/30/2008, -2/+0Sure. But factor in the cost of the doctor bills you'll be paying later because you've trashed your health by not paying attention to what you eat.
