OK, I was going along planning to make changes in my eating habits - but this is where I draw the line. That's just unamerican. - sindex, on 08/07/2008, -0/+5It should be noted about Atkins:
"Dr. Atkins' weight was consistently and frequently documented in the years and months prior to his fall; as he was suffering from cardiomyopathy, his health was monitored closely. Due to water retention, this robust 6-foot plus man, who competitively played tennis frequently during the week, had a weight that varied between 180 and 195. During his coma, as he deteriorated and his major organs failed, fluid retention and bloating dramatically distorted his body and left him at 258 pounds at the time of his death, a documented weight gain of over 60 pounds."
"Any implication that Dr. Atkins was obese or fat prior to his coma, shows a blatant disregard or even worse, lack of understanding of the medical facts surrounding this case, or of the physiology of severe heart failure and the degree of fluid retention that occurred during this hospitalization."

All quite easily fact-checked. Takes about 10 seconds. - raquel9e, on 08/07/2008, -0/+4It's not that white rice is bad for you, it's that brown rice is better for you.
- jattea, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3He was 72, and he hit his head after falling on a sidewalk! What does that have to do with a low-carb diet??
- bweltondav, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3Yeah diggs aren't working and everyone is getting stuck with captchas. This. is. lame.
- Skitzil, on 08/07/2008, -1/+4Step 4 doesn't work. I've been wrapping my Hot Pockets and Ice Cream Sandwiches in lettuce leaves for a while now, and I haven't lost a pound.
- XiiXii, on 08/07/2008, -1/+36. Break yourself of your old spaghetti habits.
Another alternative is http://www.dreamfieldsfoods.com/ - a line of pastas with low digestible carbs that tastes good and doesn't cause digestive issues. My type one diabetic girlfriend and I have been eating it for a while now without problem. - copaceticZ, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2yea excercise but try interval cardio combined with weight training if you are a man because it kicks ass regular cardio is great for most women though because it will actually eat some of their muscles if they are too muscly......
- bdawg123, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2No need to cut back on punctuation.
- laughandsing, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Protein shake? I don't think that would go well with bread.
- elveis, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2I agree with evilsin. I'm doing the low carb right now. Lost 7 lbs in the first two weeks and unlike all the other diets you don't lose any muscle mass, always stay full and contrary to popular believe, it lowers your cholesterol more than any of the other popular diets. Go figure. It's just hard to stay on for any length of time.
- mmilton, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1You mean implying that HIGH carb is unhealthy. High carb makes you think backwards.
- Kenzan, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Diet?
What are you, a woman?
Grow some nads, and eat some wings my man, then hit the barbells and stop whining about which salad has the least carbs. - nicko68, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1That gave me gas. :)
I also heard you have to be careful not to overcook it, otherwise whatever they do to hinder the carbs is neutralized. - socialpyramid, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2I said it when they first came out, and I'm saying it now: I'm skeptical of low-carb fad diets. Here's some more sensible info.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that all the comments are suddenly not getting any diggs. And I'm ***** sick of captchas.
- Scopitone, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I've been doing this for months and it's worked insanely well.
http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/04/06/ho ... - liuite, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1you should consume carbs on the days you work out. even if you don't work out, you should eat carbs at least once a week or your body will switch over to starvation mode and slow the metabolic rate...hence fluctuation in weight and loss of energy level. carbs can give you energy, but can also contribute towards development of vascular disease.
- nicko68, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I lost a LOT of weight doing low carb. Problem is I didn't want to get out of the first phase, where my carbs were very low. I ended up messing up my metabolism, whereby I'd be up 5 pounds the next day if I dared stray for one meal. I became very frustrated, and ended up gaining a lot (not all, thank God) back.
Now I'm trying to stick to good carbs, and not worrying as much about the total for the day. I'm also trying to watch calories as well, since, sure, 10 slices of bacon may be low carb, but I don't see it being conducive to losing weight. :) More realistically, I try to choose mustard over mayo and things like that. My weight isn't so fragile now. - Demener, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Same here, been on it for 4 months lost 55 lbs.
There have been a couple weeks where I've got too much going on to follow my diet strictly, but those weeks I maintain weight, and don't end up putting more on. - longcat99, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Oh thank god, I'm not the only one... I thought I was going nuts.
Who knows whats going on?! - notadiggtard, on 08/07/2008, -2/+3Buried for implying that low carb is unhealthy
- danswim393, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Well, this is some useful info that I'll put into play
- ieee, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1An entire web site with nothing but studies exposing the Atkins diet as dangerous

- secrity, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Movie theater popcorn is packed with fat, it has even more fat if it has "butter" flavor topping added to it.
- shutaro, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Brilliant!
- evilsin, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1fad perhaps,
but i know first hand they work great
i have done it twice over the last 5 years and never came close to where i started from
my body, even when it does put on weight around the holidays, holds it much better now and loses it quickly
i am 32 and have the same body i did when i was 19 and i never really exercise
the diet i did trained my body to be lean and i have only good things to say about low carb dieting
one thing i will add, i am the ONLY person i know who has truly stuck to it over a 3 week period without cheating once. it makes a huge difference. - vilago, on 08/07/2008, -2/+3i think most americans just need to start exercising. don't even change your diet just ***** get up from your office chair and move!
- jessenoob, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1o rly?
- prefekt, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Removing carbs from your diet is the first step, but you have to reintroduce them - don't just cut them and assume everything will be fine.
Losing weight is primary, but keeping it... therein lies the effort.
Spend the few weeks to get the refined carbs out of your system, watch your weight drop, reintroduce (slowly, so as not to balloon) complex carbs & fruit, get all kinds of exercise.
You don't have to permanently kick carbs from your diet, but by not making them the ever-present staple that we've all been guilty of, you'll notice a pretty huge change. I did.
(but those 4 weeks without beer were trying, to say the very least) - Spart666, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Well I don't know... but a guy at work bought a car out of the paper. Ten years later, Bam! Herpes.
- laughandsing, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I lost 50lbs before... but its really hard to stay on the diet... Especially if you love breads and pasta. You can't cheat on it at all or your body will crave things again. It works but if you go back to your old habits you'll gain most of the weight if not all of it back.
- johnholden, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah there are very few calories in popcorn.. and it's a whole grain, for god's sake.
- MudMan69, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Try learning to write using sentences.
- secrity, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Adkins was three years older than Pritikin and died of an accident; Pritikin died of leukemia.
- NJank, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1stop spamming every fricken front page articles because 'you need answers1!!!!1!"
I mean really. No you don't. Somethnig's wrong. wait it out or go away. either way, shut up. - sindex, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Anyone who's attempting a low-carb lifestyle and didn't know all 16 of these already is doing it wrong. I did 3 months of research and talked to a friend who had done it (who also talked to his doctor and his endocrinologist) before deciding it was the diet for me. It's like going vegetarian - you can't just eat beans and cheese all day. That's "technically" vegetarian, but it will wreck havoc on your body.
And to Dexter77 above, you're absolutely correct about going to 0 carbs, it's unhealthy. I started by reducing my carbs to 20 a day for two weeks and increasing carbs by 5 a week, just like Atkins suggests. I found if I did *nothing* else, I could eat about 50 carbs a day and lose weight. I also found that by doing moderate exercise (walking a few miles a day, or riding my recumbent bike) I could eat about 80-90 and still lose about a pound a month. I honestly don't think Atkins is that hard because after 3-4 months you can pretty much add anything back in your diet you want if you do it responsibly. The problem is most people never bother to RTFM before starting it.
The best part of the diet was that it's an easy way to learn PORTION CONTROL. Like the manta goes: Eat less, exercise more. You will lose weight! Finding the diet that allows you to stick to that is the key. - Dexter77, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1After losing 25kg (55lb) I still don't understand this craze to lose all carbs. I started with Atkins and it's pure agony. Sure, it'll be fine for some time but sooner or later you just have to have all that good stuff you used to eat. Usually it creates a counter-effect instead of making you understand that losing even some carbs is good. You should not try to reach zero carb diet or near zero, but cut out useless carbs instead (e.g. bread is not useless but sweets are). It'll make it a lot easier to make the diet a lifestyle. I'd say under 100g of carb is good enough for 95% of people.
- lowcarbreview, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0It's all about the food and the diet, sometimes you just have to look into what people are putting into there stomach to find the cause of a lot of their dietary problems.
http://www.lowcarbreview.com - mmilton, on 08/07/2008, -2/+2We wouldn't be as fat if we cut back on the carbs... rice, carrots, potatoes, bread... not to mention sweets. Hard to believe people would follow this plan permanently. Eating habits are too ingrained.
- shutaro, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0It is kinda funny to see a front page article that has something like 70 zero digg comments on it, tho... Clearly somebody broke something.
- Demener, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Cyclical ketogenic diet... that's pretty much what I've been on for 4 months now.
- shutaro, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0*PANICS*
Zero diggs and spambots... It's the Diggopalypse!! - Antimatter85, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0No, this plan is horrible.
Instead, try to pyramid your carb intake so that you eat most of your carbs in the first half of your day, tapering off until you don't eat any more after dark. Eating smaller meals more often will also help to regulate your metabolism and prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes.
A lot of people work out later in the day, so why would you need carbs afterwards? Eat a snack before your workout, then have a shake after you're home. - shutaro, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0@Spart666: That'll teach him to buy a car without protection.
- NJank, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.
- Paigewithlove, on 08/07/2008, -1/+1That's because those aren't authentic Chinese restaurants; some of these restaurants have been westernized to adjust for North American palates.
One more comment, Chinese people have been eating rice for ages, and there are not a lot of obese Chinese people in China. - Kenzan, on 08/07/2008, -1/+1I find it ironic that I'm getting dug down for my comment, as most diggers' diets consists of main-lining Mountain-Dew and free-basing Twinkies.
