- Tyrghast, on 02/07/2009, -1/+37I called a friend to go to Wendy's once, and he said "How about Taco Bell? Wendy's is too expensive".

Should I continue? - vuke69, on 02/07/2009, -1/+31I love the concept. But not a single one of those sound very good.
- diggface5000, on 02/07/2009, -3/+32Please, CNN. I could have 20 bowls of ramen for $10. Why would I toss them out?
- kelpee, on 02/07/2009, -1/+25Buy 2 roasting chickens at $5 ea. Make a roast chicken and potato dinner. The next day take chicken sandwhiches to work. That night have chicken quesadillas with potato pancakes for dinner. After dinner boil the bones down and strain the bones out. Pop the broth into the fridge. In the next couple of day use 2 cups of broth to make chicken fried rice and the rest as a base for a hearty winter soup. For the next rotation buy a small roast beef and repeat.
Instant rice, potatoes, bread and peanut butter will keep you alive for a long time during lean times. Using everything is critical. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+25a bowl of vegetables is not a meal
- anxdiety, on 02/07/2009, -0/+23The easiest way to save money on food is to actually learn how to cook. Learn your basic sauces and how to tell if adding something to your mixture tastes good by smelling and actually tasting as you cook. As an example look at your powder seasoning to make alfredo sauce. Its what 50 cents to 2 bucks depending for 1 meal? All that ***** is, is a bit of cornstarch and seasonings. You know that red sauce that everyone loves on Chicken Balls at chinese restaurants? Its just cornstarch, vinegar, water, sugar and ketchup. That's it that's all. I can think of hundreds of different recipes off the top of my head like that that people pay for yet cost fractions if you actually make them yourself.
I guess all those years working as a cook/chef have paid off. My favourite job actually had a FREE buffet every Friday afternoon. The rule was we had an approx budget of 80-100$ to spend and that the buffet had to last at least 30 minutes or feed at least 80 people. It was great fun coming up with something new every week 4 hours before it had to be ready. - Airjoe, on 02/07/2009, -5/+24Ten dollars each? Jeez, these people must never have gone to college. I make dinner for two for about $3-5.
- staplez, on 02/07/2009, -2/+21This is the crux of the weight problem in USA. I COULD cook for myself, or I could feed myself for a week on McDonalds for $10. No, it's not impossible, with that McDouble if I eat that for every meal, at $1 each I can eat for 5 days lunch and dinner. Now that's extreme, what's more likely is I'll "splurge" on fries and have $2 meals and drink water. Suddenly, my calorie intake is > than what I should have in a day, and i'm only spending $20 a week.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+20Those are some ***** recipes
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+17Vegetables arnt food, vegetables are what food eats.
- Tomboys, on 02/06/2009, -2/+16This is a great list of recipes. Lentil's are so good for you.
- bgmncwj, on 02/07/2009, -1/+15Did you read the article? At all? None of those meals were for under 3 servings.
- jftitan, on 02/07/2009, -0/+14Neil, messed up the lentils again. VIVIAN!!!!!!!!
- m3arvk, on 02/07/2009, -0/+14Try boiling some white rice with 50/50 water/chicken broth. Cook some black beans in a little of the broth and throw the whole deal together with some sour cream and salt.
Pretty damn tasty and cheap. - drmobutu, on 02/07/2009, -0/+13You can get, like, five for a dollar, here. With monosodium glutamate, six grams of trans-fat, and a full day's requiremnt of sodium in every serving...
- Lokonopa, on 02/06/2009, -1/+13Quiches are cheap, delicious, and can be good for you. I recommend that recipe, but I prefer turkey bacon for a large number of reasons. Mainly because it's very lean.
- minorthreat, on 02/07/2009, -2/+14people spend $10 on a meal on a regular basis? Over 5 bucks and I feel like it's a treat.
- GeyserShitdick, on 02/07/2009, -0/+12Except you have to live in China.
- anxdiety, on 02/07/2009, -0/+11Why it was actually a fun challenge? Also we served the plates or sliced the lasagna. So we actually stood there as people went through. You had instant feedback. When you are in customer service knowing you put it together and seeing people actually enjoying it is rewarding. Also remember this was on Friday so I'd start at noon cook everything myself, serve it and clean up. Be out of there by 7 in the evening. Perfect timing to go out drinking myself.
Here's an example of a mountain of spaghetti from when I was lazy:
3 Large cans crushed tomatoes = 10$ bucks
1 Box Spaghetti = 10$ bucks
Peppers/Onions = 7$ bucks tops
Dried spices and seasoning = 3$ bucks
Ground Beef = 20$ bucks
4 Loaves of Bread = 4$ bucks
5 Cloves of Garlic = 1$
5lbs of Margarine = 5$
There you just made spaghetti with garlic break to feed about 80 people for about 60 dollars. Hell if you want make the sauce even a touch fancier and throw in a cheap 5 dollar bottle of red wine and reduce it down a bit for some sweetness. Bringing you to $65 to feed a metric ton of people. As a side dish you could make enough salad for 25$ to feed 80 people as well. That's dressing included. So 90$ for Garlic Toast, Spaghetti and a tossed salad with a custom dressing. Little more than a dollar per person. We used to have a 2 drink minimum as it was a pub. You don't think the profit from having 2 beer covers that? - str1fe, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10I pay more money at my average trip to Taco Bell than at my average trip to Wendy's.
Of course I get combo meals and not the $0.89 burritos. - legoalert33, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10I can think of more than 10, most involving ramen.
- Myztry, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10Real men don't eat quiche, they eat egg and bacon pie...
- leeznon, on 02/07/2009, -1/+10$10 is still too much
- specter19, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9I kinda felt sick looking at some of those......
- Kruse, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9Every meal in that list looks like complete *****. I'd rather go hungry.
- Xinil, on 02/07/2009, -3/+11Am I the only one that read this as 10 "separate" meals for $10 or less?
- LoneWolf01, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8Please do, most of yours sound tastier than the ones in the article.
- deriancypher, on 02/07/2009, -1/+9Yeah... a lot of those recipes are poorly constructed. Nutritious? Sure. Cheap? Definately! Tastey? Not so Much. Now that's not to say these can't be fixed. I know the barley and beef one just needed seasonings (dried herbs from the pantry would even work!) and should be pretty good
- stuffradio, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Moom? The Potatoes are eating the Carrots!
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Yo. You need your own TV show.
- iSkot, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7I like how people fight over the whole ramen thing.
- jedsmith, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7People really don't know how to eat.
- wpc33, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7You will beat me on the race to the grave.
- skiindude22, on 02/07/2009, -1/+8Recipe #11: Cheerios with apricot, tomato sauce, vinegar, chocolate, broken potato chips, bacon, lucky charms, salmon, and chef boyardee of choice.
Why stop at 10? - graphak, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6That's what I'm talkin bout..well said. LOL @ the list in the article. If you are any type of cook worth their salt, you can make just about anything taste good on the cheap, use intuition to make the most of what you have, and definitely do it for much less than $10 a day.
Like kelpee said: "Using everything is critical."
Bones go to a boiling pot for stock.
Organic rotten stuff goes to the compost.
Stock is used for...nevermind, too many uses to list.
Compost makes your veggies grow big and strong, indoor and outdoor.
Leftovers follow the same philosophy as FIFO (First In First Out...no matter how tempting that greasy midnight-homebrew-drunken-ordered pizza looks when you wake up the next morning and discover that you may wish to forego the turkey-stuffing casserole combo that has been there since Christmas.)
The point is simply this: Expand your horizons. Get creative. Experiment with all of those 17 bottles of condiments you have sitting in the door of your fridge. Try to incorporate some staple foods instead of McD's. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+8Funny, all the places I go out to eat at are ***** packed anymore. Doesnt look like people are chincing on food around here.
I would also rather boil my shoe than eat most of the ***** on this list, because that would taste better. - MasterGrief, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6I'd like to add one thing to this: Chipotle Tabasco. Oh, and some chorizo too. So two things.
If you're poor, just cook mexican food. If you do it sensibly, it's not even bad for you. - charlie55, on 02/07/2009, -1/+7it is tough to spend more than 10 dollars if ou make everything yourself. food is insanely cheap. i would guess that for most of us food is a very minor expense compared to rend and car etc. especially if you like to cook, food costs almost nothing.
- kolop1, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Wow I hope the economy does not get so bad I'm forced to eat those. None of that looks filling or good.
- drmobutu, on 02/07/2009, -1/+7Fish stick tacos...
- Toshibi, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Eat like a king! 2 packs of Chicken Ramen and a Corn Dog for about 75 cents.
- babyheadout, on 02/07/2009, -0/+610 Jack In The Box 'tacos' for $5
- Dr3w, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Hot and Spicy beef ramen ftw
- Alias1431, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5It may cost less, but damn I love not ever having to do dishes.
- doubleoh7, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Recipe #12: Jam, tuna fish, cracked pepper, vinegar, on a chocolate croissant.
And to drink, a keg of what coke is made of. - stuffradio, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5In Soviet Russia, I eat you!
- str1fe, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5I think this is meant to be family-sized meals for under $10, not personal meals.
