- allaboutdatiki, on 05/22/2008, -1/+29#11 no high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oil
- cjacks9, on 05/22/2008, -0/+28A good list, if a bit long. Three items could be consolidated into one: Read the fracking labels.
- chuckDontSurf, on 05/22/2008, -1/+27Is it possible to grow beef plants?
- blackdrivel, on 05/22/2008, -0/+20The best tip for food shopping: try to buy stuff that would have been commonly eaten in the evolutionary history of the human race. You know, stuff like Doritos.
- firefox15, on 05/22/2008, -0/+16How sad that we have to "keep something in each hand to prevent us from reaching for a candy bar." I mean really, do people have no self-control at all?
- d1a1s1, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13Couldn't they have put this on 10 different pages...damn!
- ahatter, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13That one was on the list..
- emiller, on 05/22/2008, -2/+151.) don't go to the grocery store highed up.
- alexbaldwin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12that high fructose corn syrup will get ya
- pleeker, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12PAY WITH CASH. When you bring cash, you're forcing yourself to stay on a budget. Studies show that when you use a credit or debit card, you end up spending like 20% more than you planned to.

http://www.mininova.org/tor/1359149 - inactive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10I think if people were more educated on what is good for them and what isn't... we would not have such a problem with obesity. Marketing causes a lot of people to buy things they think are healthier because the ads make them believe it... the truth is everyone needs to read the stats on the side of the packaging and understand what they are reading.
- ubuwalker31, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10O RLY? I am an avid home gardener, and I seriously doubt that more than 10% of my yearly food supply comes out of my garden. I usually get a 4 month supply of fresh herbs, 2 months worth of tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers...and even then...I think I break even, money wise. Fruit and nut trees on the property where I work nicely supplement my diet as well...but...it doesn't really make a dent in my food budget..
- TheMachine1, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8Is rape some strange Canadian word for rapeseed oil? Or is that your rape kit: case of beer.
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+9I think you can avoid most of these problems by keeping a well organized pantry. I have mine compartmentalized and labeled: breakfast foods, lunch, rape, quick snacks, impromptu entertainment, grains pastas ect.
Being able to see it all clearly like that helps to avoid bad decisions when making a list and at the store. - BufordT, on 05/22/2008, -0/+810. Keep your eye on the cashier.
What if the cashier is a guy? Not that there's anything wrong with that. - castevens, on 05/22/2008, -0/+83. Avoid shopping on an empty stomach.
When you're hungry, you're more likely to grab high-fat snacks and desserts.
I noticed this one before, but when i started going when I had just eaten, I would tend to buy nothing at all because nothing looked appealing. - romistrub, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8That's why you need to make a list.
- thegator25, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7What's a rape food? Where can I find some?
- pentupentropy, on 05/22/2008, -3/+10grow.. your... own.. food
You'd be amazed how much of your yearly food can be grown at home in a really small space. - amabaie, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7And don't buy anything unhealthy that will sit around the house tempting you to munch on it. Ever notice how fast a giant bag of chips can disappear?
- seanieb, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8"no sugar added".... you can be sure its full with Aspartame, Saccharin or some other artificial sweetener.
- Birdoftruth, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6I work at publix as a stocker and I know way more to this.
#11 When you shop around the perimeter start at one end and when you reach the other, take the route back. Do not cut across the express way. This is where All the on sale end caps are and you will be so tempted to buy you won't be able to refuse a buy one get one free for corn pops.
#12 Make sure you do not peruse through the sales page that comes out. This may cause you to purchase stuff you normally do not need just based on the fact that it's cheap.
#13 Enter the dietetic food section from the perimeter end, don't you dare go past it or turn your back. GOing past = Candies. Turning your back = Cereals. Few Cereals are good for you. YMMV
#14 if possible do express lane or if your store has it do self checkout (less junk like candy and Enquirer) - RATM4EVER, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6Be careful--There is a difference between MADE IN (country) and PRODUCT OF (country)
MADE IN """ doesn't mean the ingredients are from the same country. A Pie Made in Canada could actually contain Chinese Apples, and they can still label it as 'Made In Canada", since it is prepared in Canada
PRODUCT OF """ ensures all ingredients are indeed from that country.
In short, don't buy Canadian pie? - BXRWXR, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7Or a cheeseburger tree?
- chanop, on 05/22/2008, -1/+6what the ***** is wrong with you?
- rpi22, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5are you a frakking cylon?
- insanebrain, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4A bit long ?
- romistrub, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6Oh yeah, cuz all of us have the time to do that.
- sonnygill, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5Great list.
- Jwoey, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Not all salads are good for you. A lot of fat fatties make that assumption and think they're eating healthier by eating a gigantic caesar salad
- kingmanic, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4I think time has more to do with it then taste. A good lean pot roast with steamed veges and a light vinaigrettes is fairly healthy but time consuming. A big mac fries and soda is quick but meh tasting.
Time > taste > health - UltX, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5And this is why I think anyone who drinks diet coke (or any other diet soft drink for that matter), is a moron.
If you're not drinking a load of sugar, you're drinking a load of chemicals. Wanna drink healthy? DON'T drink soft drinks.
But hey, ignorance is bliss, right? - scalded, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Use the self-checkout. Keep an eye on yourself.
- ileftfark, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5...says the person commenting on an internet board.
- lordno, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Or you'll buy all the nutmeg.
- jp12380, on 05/22/2008, -3/+6I think you must have just purchased rose colored glasses.
People know it's bad for them but it tastes so good they do not care. - sovereign3, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3For anyone interested in nutrition, that is a must-read. You'd be amazed at how brainwashed we have become as to what is healthy for us and what isn't healthy for us.
To summarize; stick to food that is actually food (fruits, veggies, produce, etc.) and avoid the food that only scarcely resembles food (Doritos, fish sticks, and margarine). - Typhoon2009, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3I guess if you're a chlorine molecule and you like all that sodium...
- Tarnum, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4Saccharin = cancerogenic
Aspartame = cancerogenic
"Some studies have also recommended further investigation into possible connections between aspartame and negative effects such as headaches, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma." - kyleforeman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3It's hard to avoid the Corn Syrup. That ***** is in everything.
- AussieWebmaster, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Guess I will have to turn the gas on in my apartment so I can start cooking harlthy
- DteK, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3but maaaaah, I want hawaiian punch!!!
- jankind, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3#13. Read #3
- jgzman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2WTF kind of a compartment is that? I haven't laughed so hard in some time.
- VinceNoir, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Harlthy (adj.) - The sort of typing an Aussie web master who is trying to code, IM and post on Digg at the same time is likely to engage in.
(Not Necessarily the Spelling Nazis) - VinceNoir, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Your lack of truthiness gives me pause.
- secrity, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Without looking, can you name any more of the steps in TFA?
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3I hear Polar Bear is fat free and tasty.
- VinceNoir, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2No. People don't know that it's bad for them. In fact, most of the time they idiotically think they know what they're doing when they buy food. "Ooooh it says fat free, I'll buy 20 of them and eat them in one sitting", thinks the fatass in the grocery store.
