10 Steps to Smarter Food Shopping
rd.com — #8. "Watch the language." Beware of foods labeled "no sugar added" -- the wording is carefully chosen, because the product may be loaded with natural sugar. You'll find the real story on the label, under "Sugars."

An important note: Fat is an often-confused topic. Eating fat doesn't make you fat, it's how you eat it. A 2000-calorie plan is a 2000-calorie plan no matter how you slice it. However, fat is very calorie-dense, so eating food that's high in fat will make you less full for the same amount of calories.- SPECOPS, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0Not entirely true, 2000 calories of raw fresh fruits and veggies (even if its the high fat avocado variety) lost me 25 pounds in about 2 1/2 months - I was on a strict 2000 calories of other stuff (fish, salad, cooked veggies) which got me to almost 300 pounds - I kid you not, the same 2000 calories, but different food types, does make a difference - it's not as simple as calories in vs calories burned. Most won't believe it until they have tried it themselves.
- MorbenDK, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1what's your average amount of activity during the day? what kinds of activity? what's the climate like where you live? what's your ethnicity? .... these things matter too
while its possible you are entirely correct, there may be more factors at work that contributed to it working for you.

To summarize; stick to food that is actually food (fruits, veggies, produce, etc.) and avoid the food that only scarcely resembles food (Doritos, fish sticks, and margarine).

- ahatter, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13That one was on the list..
- chanop, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2When I grocery shop on an empty stomache, I tend to get more stuff that I would actually eat, and am a lot less wastefull in the end.
When I shop on a full stomach, I buy "new" stuff that I haven't tried, and stuff I normally wont eat, and it just sits- locke2002, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I prefer to shop on an empty stomach not so much because of how I feel shopping hungry, but because of how I feel when shopping non-hungry. When I shop not hungry I wander around the store looking at all the foods I normally would probably get and think "Hmm, naaah, that doesn't sound too good..." and I end up not having enough good things to eat when I come out of the store.
I guess it's all related to how well you plan your meals though. Typically I would just load my cart with stuff I would want to eat. Lately I've been starting to plan more interesting meals, buying more specific things. If you planned everything, then you wouldn't want the hunger luring you into grabbing stuff.

- ubuwalker31, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10O RLY? I am an avid home gardener, and I seriously doubt that more than 10% of my yearly food supply comes out of my garden. I usually get a 4 month supply of fresh herbs, 2 months worth of tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers...and even then...I think I break even, money wise. Fruit and nut trees on the property where I work nicely supplement my diet as well...but...it doesn't really make a dent in my food budget..
- VinceNoir, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2If it's 10% of your yearly intake, then yes it does make a dent in your diet. It probably just doesn't feel like a wallop with a mallet.
- queenmoweeny, on 05/22/2008, -1/+10I think if people were more educated on what is good for them and what isn't... we would not have such a problem with obesity. Marketing causes a lot of people to buy things they think are healthier because the ads make them believe it... the truth is everyone needs to read the stats on the side of the packaging and understand what they are reading.
- jp12380, on 05/22/2008, -3/+6I think you must have just purchased rose colored glasses.
People know it's bad for them but it tastes so good they do not care.- kingmanic, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4I think time has more to do with it then taste. A good lean pot roast with steamed veges and a light vinaigrettes is fairly healthy but time consuming. A big mac fries and soda is quick but meh tasting.
Time > taste > health- jp12380, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1For me it is different, I know I don't always eat healthy, ok a lot of the time I don't but I would be willing the spend the time to make a healthy meal if I thought it tasted good.
For me
taste>health>time.
Look at all those shows with obese people, they know they aren't eating healthy, look at that show biggest losers they know what they eat is not healthy it's because they like the taste. - kingmanic, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I'm a stretching out a bit with age (160lbs, 5'8", 28), but I try to eat well but lack the time to do so. I exercise too but again not as much as i need to due to time. Good food isn't about the calories or the fat it's just good food. Portion control goes a long way too. The time factor ought to go down a bit soon and I can stop eating out. Eating out prompts me to eat more as paying $36 for a awesome steak guilts me into eating all of it. But if I ate the steak but left the mash and buttered greens I'd be okay. When i get soem more time I can reduce the portions in my own cooking and have more calorie lite snacks (veggie platter with a light vinaigrette instead of donuts and dbl cream dbl sugar tea).
- jp12380, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1For me it is different, I know I don't always eat healthy, ok a lot of the time I don't but I would be willing the spend the time to make a healthy meal if I thought it tasted good.
- VinceNoir, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2No. People don't know that it's bad for them. In fact, most of the time they idiotically think they know what they're doing when they buy food. "Ooooh it says fat free, I'll buy 20 of them and eat them in one sitting", thinks the fatass in the grocery store.
- secrity, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Some people do that, and some people know that it is bad for them and eat it anyway. It is a addiction.
- kingmanic, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4I think time has more to do with it then taste. A good lean pot roast with steamed veges and a light vinaigrettes is fairly healthy but time consuming. A big mac fries and soda is quick but meh tasting.
- haikuFU, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1When the FDA mandated that people put Trans Fat on the stats, many companies just reduced the serving size so there was less then 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving so they could put a big fat zero there. Shady bastards.

Plus, there's nothing that cuts through to make a decision better than literally not being able to afford it. You'll think a lot harder about what you buy and if its worth it. Also, check out the sales from more than just one store.
oh, and remember.. Coupons are your friends - take the time to cut them out.- akatherder, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I've found myself shopping primarily at one grocery store due to gas prices. There needs to be great deals on a few certain things at both stores to lure me into driving out to two places.
It seems like store specials and store brands usually trump coupon prices for the fancy brands (at least at Meijer where I usually shop). My kid doesn't even know that Toucan Sam exists. It's all about the Carmen Miranda looking broad on the Fruity O's box. - secrity, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Only if you would have bought the product anyway without the coupon. Coupons can cause over-buying. Food coupons are almost always for processed food that probably isn't good for you.
- MorbenDK, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Yes, of course only use coupons for things you would buy anyway- this is common sense.
Also, regarding the sales ads.. all I said was take a look at more than 1 place... just because the food store is right behind your house doesn't mean it has great prices & sometimes even a store with bad prices will have an amazing deal on something you need anyway.
Yes, on the whole store brand is cheaper-- but if you match the coupons with the sales.. often times you can get better quality goods for less than the regular store brand price.

- Birdoftruth, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6I work at publix as a stocker and I know way more to this.
#11 When you shop around the perimeter start at one end and when you reach the other, take the route back. Do not cut across the express way. This is where All the on sale end caps are and you will be so tempted to buy you won't be able to refuse a buy one get one free for corn pops.
#12 Make sure you do not peruse through the sales page that comes out. This may cause you to purchase stuff you normally do not need just based on the fact that it's cheap.
#13 Enter the dietetic food section from the perimeter end, don't you dare go past it or turn your back. GOing past = Candies. Turning your back = Cereals. Few Cereals are good for you. YMMV
#14 if possible do express lane or if your store has it do self checkout (less junk like candy and Enquirer) - lunabee, on 05/22/2008, -3/+0mmmmmm sugar!
- guillebravo6, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Fruit and Vegetables are key! I'm contemplating eating this only. I have tried a 7 day fruit fast before and I'm telling you feel great!
- MorbenDK, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2first of all - if you're eating nothing but fruit you can't call it a fruit fast.
secondly, all that sugar is great, but you have to eat constantly, otherwise your blood sugar crashes and you kill people - muxon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0I've been doing that for lunch since the beginning of this year... I'm down 20 lbs so far (219 to 199). This is my lunch:
- Apple (pink lady currently)
- Orange / peach / plum / banana or pear (recently switched from fruit cups to actual fresh fruit for these)
- Half a container of AE yogurt
- Granola bar (alternating between Fiber One and some kind of fruit and nut one)
I can tell you though, it gets old. And that energy goes away as well. I was doing really well for the first several months, but I've been feeling pretty run down for the last week or two. I eat mixed nuts for a protein snack in the afternoon but by the time I get home I'm starving and craving meat and pasta badly.
Gonna keep at it though and try bringing some raw vegetables for lunch as well. My goal is to hit 30 lbs lost by July.
Oh and one other benefit is that I haven't been sick this year... not even one slight symptom of anything.
- MorbenDK, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2first of all - if you're eating nothing but fruit you can't call it a fruit fast.
- Jovensdesciple, on 05/22/2008, -7/+2Don't eat like a big fat fatty and you won't become a big fat fatty. If someone doesn't know that a cheeseburger is bad for them and that a salad is good for them then I'm sorry, but they should be fat and die young. Fatties can read articles like this all they want but this kind of information is useless to a person with no common sense.
- Jwoey, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Not all salads are good for you. A lot of fat fatties make that assumption and think they're eating healthier by eating a gigantic caesar salad
- ktk1336, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2I think "big fat fatties" have more of an addiction issue than a common sense issue. Some people like drugs, some like gambling, some like sex .... others like food. Regardless of whether they "know" it's bad for them, it's hard to resist if you're psychologically or physically addicted.
- Typhoon2009, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1It's all about moderation and work. I do lots of weight training. I need to eat a lot to gain muscle. A real (low fat) hamburger just so happens to provide all the nutrients I need. That said, a fat person shouldn't keep eating tons of burgers if they're not doing any exercise at all.
- seanieb, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8"no sugar added".... you can be sure its full with Aspartame, Saccharin or some other artificial sweetener.

If you're not drinking a load of sugar, you're drinking a load of chemicals. Wanna drink healthy? DON'T drink soft drinks.
But hey, ignorance is bliss, right?- loneraven, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Yea, tell that to my parents. They're diabetic, and all they drink is diet sodas and sugar free Kool-Aid. So they get rid of the sugar in their diet and replace it with chemicals.
Me? I haven't drank a soda in over a year, and I don't have the desire to (unless you count club soda/sparkling water). It's all water for me with a little OJ and Apple Juice on the side.

- sovereign3, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I think you mean "carcinogenic."
I avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible. Not only are they not good for you, but real sugar tastes so much better. Just use it sparingly.

HFCSs
Saccharin
Aspartame
Crystalline Fructuse
Sucrose
Sweet'n'Low, Equal, etc.

- helooksmortal, on 05/22/2008, -7/+4the list could've just been condense into one step:
1.) Use common sense.- dianebl, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3The thing about common sense is that it is unfortunately not so common. People do need to be reminded about these things; otherwise the marketing tricks described wouldn't work.
- sovereign3, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2The problem with that is that common sense says "eat margarine because it has less fat." Or "eat granola bars that claim to be carb-free." In reality there is little proof that that kind of food is good for you. People have lost all common sense when it comes to food because they are TOLD what is good for them. Vitamin fortified bread, omega-3 enhance margarine, fiber enriched cereal-- none of that is necessarily good for you.
- RATM4EVER, on 05/22/2008, -0/+6Be careful--There is a difference between MADE IN (country) and PRODUCT OF (country)
MADE IN """ doesn't mean the ingredients are from the same country. A Pie Made in Canada could actually contain Chinese Apples, and they can still label it as 'Made In Canada", since it is prepared in Canada
PRODUCT OF """ ensures all ingredients are indeed from that country.
In short, don't buy Canadian pie?- zeabu, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1so?

What if the cashier is a guy? Not that there's anything wrong with that.- scalded, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Use the self-checkout. Keep an eye on yourself.

deja vu? - debuffplx, on 05/22/2008, -1/+9I think you can avoid most of these problems by keeping a well organized pantry. I have mine compartmentalized and labeled: breakfast foods, lunch, rape, quick snacks, impromptu entertainment, grains pastas ect.
Being able to see it all clearly like that helps to avoid bad decisions when making a list and at the store.- thegator25, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7What's a rape food? Where can I find some?
- TheMachine1, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8Is rape some strange Canadian word for rapeseed oil? Or is that your rape kit: case of beer.
- Testiculese, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I like opening a can a rape every now and again.
What kind of food is impromptu entertainment? How is food "fun"? - jgzman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2WTF kind of a compartment is that? I haven't laughed so hard in some time.
- sblue7, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0thats a good idea debuffplx, i should try that, i need to start organizing my lists
- terajoule, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3#11: Buy nothing but ramen noodles. That is all.

It's real easy, folks. Shouldn't eat a candy bar? Then DON'T. I look at all the candy bars on the rack. I know they are bad for me. They stay on the rack. See? That was easy.- funkymoose, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2it's a little more complex than that pal.
- Testiculese, on 05/27/2008, -1/+1Actually, no..it's not.

- lemorin, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Show me the proof of his claim you *****. How Can I get enough essential vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids on just fruit? Thats why pregnant mothers dont produce fruit juice.
- shoediva, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Great list........ I'm printing it and putting it on my fridge.
- dgmsu, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0I could identify with some of the rules without previously realizing they existed. It is increasingly important to monitor closely the ingredients of the products sold. Avoiding certain preservatives, artificial flavorings & colorings, GMO products that change the nutrition and PH of produce, and produce that are known to soak up more inorganic chemicals during their agricultural production. Good rules, keep adding more.
- Laura00, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0impressive!!!!
- kyleforeman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3It's hard to avoid the Corn Syrup. That ***** is in everything.
- SilverBlade2k, on 05/22/2008, -2/+2I could also add in "Avoid anything that says 'sugar free'...sugar-free implies aspartame (which was denied by the FDA for 8 years until Rumsfeld fired the guy and brought in someone who would approve it)
- LZeppelinJ0, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Never thought about just shopping on the outer perimeter of the stores, but it makes sense now. Generally Wegmans has a huge fresh-foods section though, gotta love Wegs :)
- aslanrec, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1Thank you, Reader's Digest, for giving us common sense shopping tips. Oh yeah, and wasting my time.

- albinorhino101, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0I just watch what the fat ass people buy and buy the opposite
- funkymoose, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I used to advertise random food products and sell them. You don't know how many people would fall for the "no added sugar" bit. More often then not, it really was loaded with sugar. Even if someone asked me what "no added sugar" meant I would just say it means that it only comes with the natural sugars already inside the fruits, etc. Which sounds nice enough I guess, because unless they look at the back of the product they probably walk off thinking it's still a lower sugar amount. A lot of people would think that "no added sugar" would even mean that it had zero sugar. There must have been a dozen diabetics I had to stop after they said something like "this is great! my husband/me has diabetes so the no added sugar is great!" You would think they would know the difference being diabetic, but some are as clueless as the rest. On the topic of sugar, another trick some companies use is using about half or more "splenda" type sweetener and half real sugar. People assume it doesn't have the fake sugar in it because it has real sugar, but they just put it in there so it looks like it only has a little sugar.
- stujada, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0Low Fat = Added sugar (generally corn syrup)
- craiginct, on 05/23/2008, -1/+1#10 - Graze while shopping
I recently saw a mature women (soon to be a blue hair) eating grapes as she shopped.
Hey, they are free if you eat them before checkout/ - gkiltz, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0The world would be a better place if these things actually worked!
The best way to save money is not to be too brand fixated. In only a very few cases is there ANY difference at all between the "house" brand and the "National" brand.
A perfect example: Rice-A-Roni The Wal Mart brand is only different in that the rice and vermicelli are still in layers instead of already mixed. If you cook it according to the identical directions, it makes no difference, because they get well mixed in the cooking process no matter what!
Most house brands are made side-by-side with the national brands anyway, and the local store's markup is usually HIGHER on their own brand! Despite the fact that they receive no manufacturer credit on the damages, and are therefore authorized in all cases to give slightly damaged products that are safe to use, but not sale-able to the local food bank.Manufacturers restrict that! Some want ALL damaged product destroyed, no matter how minor the damage!
