- Fjosnisse, on 04/19/2009, -0/+59This is probably one of the worst lists I've ever seen. It's basically telling you to eat simple carbs, which cause a spike in blood sugar, then a subsequent crash because of an excessive release of insulin. The 'crash' makes you sleepy.
This article in a nutshell: Diabetes helps you sleep. - inactive, on 04/19/2009, -1/+51Sadly, carbohydrates close to bedtime also promotes fat gain.

- 4912401, on 04/19/2009, -1/+32I love how ceral makes you sleepy, but we eat it for breakfast,
- RoloTomasie, on 04/19/2009, -0/+23This is like the '*****-You-Atkin' Diet.
- fyrewal, on 04/19/2009, -0/+22For those who don't want to go through the slideshow:
1. Jelly Beans
2. Bread
3. Snacks (Corn chips, pretzels, rice cakes, saltine crackers)
4. Cereal (Golden Grahams, Grapenuts Flakes, Corn Flakes)
5. Potatoes (Mashed potatoes, french fries, red baked potatoes)
6. Instant Rice
7. Sweet Snacks (Vanilla wafers, graham crackers)
8. Tofu Dessert
9. Watermelon
10. Honey - Eurynom0s, on 04/19/2009, -0/+20Buried for 10 different pages. Wouldn't have minded *as* much if it only reloaded the part with each food though and not the WHOLE DAMN PAGE.
- diggan8, on 04/19/2009, -0/+17A bottle of Jim Beam.
- trer, on 04/19/2009, -1/+18Sex can put you to sleep and it burns calories. If you lack a partner, masturbation can be used as a substitute.
- bixby1, on 04/19/2009, -1/+16Cool, I'm gonna wolf down a baguette and KO myself for the night
- KORGOTH, on 04/19/2009, -0/+11A fine Oregonian establishment called Voodoo Doughnuts used to sell Nyquill glazed doughnuts. That is until the FDA came knocking, as far as I understand it.
In the immortal words of Wendell- "Had like half a bottle of melatonin, six beers, and this whole ***** bucket of chicken. Aaaa, THE SANDMAN'S COMIN!" - psychohog, on 04/19/2009, -0/+11Roofie Colada.
- Grolsch, on 04/19/2009, -1/+11Let me fix it for you
#1-10: Irrelevant
#11 Beer - tesuji05, on 04/19/2009, -1/+11and if you can't masturbate, a quick hammer blow to the head can be used as a substitute.
- nourayehia, on 04/19/2009, -0/+9For me a cup of camomile does the perfect job. I guess a slice of baguette wouldn't hurt !
- WhoDoneIt, on 04/20/2009, -1/+1012 beer and a slice of pizza works like a charm.
- genericdigger, on 04/20/2009, -1/+9Also, marijuana
- pinetree, on 04/19/2009, -0/+8Yeah, if they skipped the worthless photos they could have fit the whole thing above the fold on a single page.
- yevkasem, on 04/19/2009, -2/+9what ever happened to beer and weed?
- diggadigga, on 04/20/2009, -0/+7The author is a moron. Every nutritionist and sleep specialist are probably facepalming this article. I'm never trusting Reader's Digest ever again. This is an epic ***** up.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 04/19/2009, -0/+7How about using the glycemic index to, you know, not get fat?
- baldycraig, on 04/19/2009, -0/+6So most foods put us to sleep?
- Osyrus, on 04/19/2009, -0/+6The index scales from 1 to 100. Learn more about glycemic index rankings.
8. Tofu dessert (115)
Contradict much?
Oh, and watermelon as an aphrodisiac is a big crock of *****. - roxgod666, on 04/19/2009, -1/+6You just answered your own question.
- Lomi, on 04/19/2009, -2/+7This list should be titled 10 foods to eat before you go to bed to make you gain huge amounts of fat. Your metabolism drops substantially when you sleep, so if your metabolism is any slower than normal that food is going to sit in your stomach most of the night, and you may find yourself burping it up when you get up as well.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5Heroin does the job for me.
- cmjM67, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4my left hand helps me fall asleep
- StickWST, on 04/19/2009, -2/+6A cup of chamomile and 3mg of melatonin does the job for me.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4Though that was disproven recently too. A common myth due to Turkey containing large amounts of trytophan and people getting tired after eating it. The reason Turkey dinner makes you tired isn't because Turkey contains high levels of Tryptophan, it's that you just ate a large meal - Turkey is typically always a lage meal (Thanksgiving, Christmas etc)
tl;dr: Tryptophan doesn't make you tired - rentmitchum, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4I've found a lot of times when I toss and turn and can't fall asleep that if I masturbate I'll drift off within 10 minutes of finishing.. So yea, I'd totally say it works for me at least.
- Fjosnisse, on 04/19/2009, -1/+5Really? Carbohydrates in general are digested fairly quickly, but to say they digest over an equal period of time is absurd. Fiber is digested at a much slower rate than chocolate.
In fact, if somebody is suffering from a hypoglycemic episode they are advised to eat simple carbs (orange juice / chocolate) to alleviate the symptoms followed by a complex carb to avoid a spike in insulin. - GeekNurse, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Is marijuana considered a food? Before you think I'm being sarcastic, tobacco is considered a food.
- disrupter, on 04/19/2009, -1/+4Where's the Punani?
- wizardcombat, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3These pretzels are makin' me sleepy.
- liuite, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3eating food high on glycemic index before bed means it will become belly fat...I was 132 lbs and wanted to gain weight, so I ate a small serving of pasta every night before I went to bed and gained 20 lbs.
- burnin8r28, on 04/19/2009, -1/+4An excuse to eat more jellybeans! yaaaaay
- kaji823, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2WTF, this is more like the top 10 worst foods that make your blood sugar spike. High glycemic index = bad
- dhulser, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2is it just me or does this rag smell like chloroform?
- solboldi, on 04/19/2009, -4/+6eating high glycemic foods is bad though. they are part of the reason there is an epidemic of juvenile diabetes in this country.
- rentmitchum, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2People on digg who haven't ever had access to drugs think that any time someone admits drug use, they're doing it to try to be cool.. some are, but some aren't. Try not to be so insecure, people. Some people actually aren't up-their-own-asses about everything they do.. and usually people who smoke it regularly are the less fake among us.. the ones who aren't trying for some sort of status.. But then again, some are. It's just sad digg seems to assume every time someone is open about what they do, the insecure little kid commenters have to try to put them down.
On topic, I read somewhere that marijuana can increase the body's own melatonin synthesis by something like 5000% or more.. maybe 8000%.. it was in the thousands, I know that. I don't have the reference, but I know I read it somewhere.. if anyone really cares it's probably a google away.. so yea, part of it 'was' the weed. - inactive, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2I hate how they have the page set up.
I didn't even make it past # 6!
The list is stupid; they're basically telling you to get fat by eating those kinds of food!
I always eat an apple before I go to sleep; it's the best :) - StyngerSmash, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Believe it or not, a cup of coffee helps me sleep. Go figure.
- bubbameister33, on 04/20/2009, -3/+5Ceral, that's terrble.
- aronnyc, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2If the scale is 1 to 100 and tofu dessert is 115, what does that mean? I makes you comatose immediately?
- Shugii, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2Although it does say "within 4 hours". You should have already used that energy before you went to sleep but yes, it is bad. Actually these foods are probably best not to eat just before bedtime, because these foods will just make you go straight to bed when you really shouldn't.
- MacEnvy, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2@GeekNurse
From a separate 2004 study:
http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/news/20041210 ...
"One exception may be delayed sleep phase syndrome.
People with that condition have a hard time falling asleep before the wee hours of the night and also have trouble waking in the morning. Short-term melatonin use could help with that particular sleep disorder, say the researchers. This is a long-term problem and different from jet lag, a similar short-term problem."
I'd guess the majority of people taking it - and certainly the people here - aren't taking it for jet lag. And it DOES appear to help for some problems. So it's not nearly as cut and dried as you insinuate. - Manuelmty, on 04/20/2009, -0/+11 hour of bike does the job for me
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1my right one does the job just perfect
- StyngerSmash, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1Nope, I don't. I'm actually a very focused person. Never been diagnosed with ADHD. I drink a cup or two of coffee everyday. If I don't, I'll have problems sleeping.
