- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Why not?
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's no more crazy or out there than sitting on ones fat butt in front of the T.V. or on the computer reading digg for 1/3 of ones life. Which if you ask me is pretty freaking out there. At least this guy and others like him will have a story to tell at the next party they go to. And trust me, "Dude you won't believe what I did! I ran 100K if in snow man, in the freaking snow, in freaking Antartica!!!" sounds alot better than "Dude, you won't believe what I did! I posted on the internet man. Dude it was on digg, man. And like someobody posted back and called me a dumbass man!! Isn't that wild!"
- Phirenzic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm having a hard enough time training for a regular marathon. I can only imagine what it must be like to cover that kind of distance in those temperatures. Plus, it's not like there is a conveniently cleared course for him to run. With 30-knot winds, the blowing snow must be constantly changing the landscape.
Here's some more info on the race:
http://www.icemarathon.com/live/145.html#ultra - KillaVanilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think it's awesome that he's doing something that he wants to do for no other reason than he wants to. He's got more balls than I do.
- ArcticWolf_0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hope his body can take it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Agreed? When I first read it I thought someone was running 100,000 somethings.
- gommle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How am I gonna run 100 Kelvin?
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So, how does he deal with the chafing? I mean, many runners will use body glide to keep their clothes from causing them to bleed while running very long distances, but if he has to be completely covered in clothing, what, would he dip himself in a vat of the glide? I am curious how someone gets that to pan out.
- Naradar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What does this guy do if he has to take a ***** during the run?
- ElectroBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2100 K (kelvin) = -173.15 degrees C (Celsius) = -279.67 degrees F (Fahrenheit)
I don't think any human can walk not to mention run at -173.15 C (-279.67 F)
100 km (kilometers, small k and m) - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think there's any harvesting going on in Antarctica, so no one will have to worry about chaff.
- Vertigo0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your going to chaff period. Even though your fully clothed you can still use body glide or vasoline or whatever on the the more painful chaffing areas you just gotta keep your bodyglide from freezing.
- dagnabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess he'd be SOL.
- acff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if i was in great shape and tolerant of sub zero temps i would love to do an antarctic marathon
- gommle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can do it easily in -30C (I've tried), the biggest problem is that the water instantly freezes.
- hockey4ever17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0page not found?
- peterh40, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9In Soviet Russia this is called Monday.
- techieblogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Found that too, but the link Phirenzic posted still works:
http://www.icemarathon.com/live/145.html#ultra - HunterKiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2He can totally use this to pick up chicks....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"He's got more balls than I do."
In the freezing cold it sure won't appear that way. - chaimpot0k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many people compete in this race?
Follow up, how many die? - jayhawk88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"It's no more crazy or out there than sitting on ones fat butt in front of the T.V. or on the computer reading digg for 1/3 of ones life."
You know I have to disagree, I believe it's significantly more crazy. If you look at this from a "What would our caveman ancestors do/Evolution guides us" perspective, running 60 miles in sub-freezing temperatures for no reason would be many, many levels lower on the "Things I should do" scale than sitting in your warm cave, painting on the wall about the hilarious wooley mammoth boner you saw that day.
Not saying the guy should not be admired for doing this, because God knows I was a huge wuss just this morning when I walked the dog 1.5 miles in 35 degree weather, but you have to admit, this is not something the Human Animal naturally would do. - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2silly black people? i take it that you sat down with him and discussed asarien's racial background before making that statement?
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Pretty amazing. Kind of like when Rocky went training in Russia...
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2geek! LOL
- thefoxtrot, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8it soviet russia the freezer trains you!!!
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3FTA: "When reporters asked what it felt like as Pierce ran laps, he simply responded: "It's frickin' freezin' in here!"
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3hee hee
- mabba18, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Silly black people. Still doing pointless, "gansta" nonsense.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1 -1 milllion degress, mwahahhaha.... mwahahhaa..... mwahahhahaha
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2hey vegeta... whats up?
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3And then again we ask ourselves, "Why?".
- asarien, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Silly white people. Still doing pointless, "x-treme" nonsense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2they need to add a bury option of "The people mentioned in this article are missing a majority of their mental marbles." or just "Filled with Stupid People" or "FSP" for short.
- slushpuppie, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3 I, for one, welcome our new frozenly speedy overlords!
- lord138, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Shortly thereafter Mini-Me was seen running behind...
- BaconLewis, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2More proof that marathoners hate themselves.
