- NCSUspoon, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9My favorite is the Upper Gauley.
- AricC, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7No West Virginia? I've done the New River twice and it's a blast. Haven't done the Gauley, but if you live on the East Coast it's worth a trip the prices are pretty reasonable too.
- SybotCB, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9dead already?
- hoffey, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Nile River:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omCel4B-ESc - ShooterMcGavin, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Link is dead, but for my money I say the middle fork of the Salmon river through the River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho.
Twas a blast. - screensnot, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4I've done the Upper Gauley 3 times. Definitely a good ride.
I've done the Ocoee once. Rode the bull (sitting on the front of the raft with your feet dangling over the front, holding a strap that runs over the bow in one hand, while waiving the other) over Devil's Peak.
I've also done the Upper Youghegheny in Maryland. This was the most dangerous of the three. We went in late March when the river is really flowing from the snow melt. It was cold as hell, and snowed on us the last few miles. - nharpe, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Upper and Lower Gauley Marathon every year baby!! That river is fantastic. Can't believe it's not on this list.
- rinote, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Dugg for Snake River and memories.
- Rageous, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4No Gauley in West Virginia? Or Cherry Creek and Upper Kings in California? Someone clearly glossed over a few web-based recommendations and compiled a list. And I'm not sure how you could write a whole paragraph about Colorado whitewater without mentioning Gore Canyon, easily one of the top three whitewater spots in the continental US.
- johnnyrotten, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Great article! All of the recommendations are for rivers far away from here, so nobody will crowd up the rivers in my back yard. Yeah, I'm a selfish bastard, but I love to kayak and raft!
- riverrunner, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3The Upper Animas near Durango is an oft overlooked but spectacular river in Colorado since it is about as far away from Denver as you can get and still be in Colorado.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW6HCUceMYI - Shivan57, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3WW Rafting is the cats pajamas. Combine camping, fear of death and booze and you have one HELL of a good time. Besides, where else can you get 3 squares 2 nights of camping and an 8 hour tour for ~$100? Where I say?!

- bioprez, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3the yough river in ohiopyle is a great whitewater rafting area....
- dwhitbeck, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3In Pennsylvania there is the Youghiogheny river and in West Virginia the Cheat river.
- Tbyrd073, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Sounds like a blast I have only ever been on the Colorado River, Colorado and the New and Gauley Rivers in W. Va. Both of those places were a blast. I would love to do more rapids.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+3The Ocoee River in Tennessee is my personal favorite. It was where portions of the 1996 Olympics were held.
http://www.ocoee-outdoors.com/ - mfontain, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I thought I had been down some pretty serious Class V whitewater in West Virginia.... Then I rode El Rio Toro in Costa Rica. Now THATS a heck of a ride, if you can find a company that guides it. (When I was there, only 1 did because most companies thought it was too dangerous. Also, our guides had only been down the river 3 times before.....)
- EricDowner, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2The Tatshenshini that crosses through the Yukon, B.C. and the Alaskan Panhandle is pretty sweet, too, some breathtaking views, great water, glaciers and, yes, I nearly died. More than once.
- lovemorgul, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Did you check it on google cache?

- diatonic1, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Just so you know, when you link to youtube.com/my_videos... we can't see them.
- hydroplane, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Chatooga River near Clemson. It has all the scenery from Deliverance, without the squealing, unless you get dunked in the Bull Sluice waterfall.
- Tbyrd073, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Went with Songer Whitewater guides this past summer on the New River. I loved it. My favorite part thought was the bus ride back to camp where they had a cooler full of beer and a friend and I had a contest to see how many we could drink in the 20 min bus ride back to camp. All in all I would recommend going with Songer Whitewater if you are planning on running the New River or Gauley. They are a fun bunch of people to run it with.
- Featherlake, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the heads up:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jtmiI9URE94 - Featherlake, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I can speak from experience, I have rafted the Zambezi twice. Once when I was 15 and then a couple of years ago when I was 36.
It was bar far the most extreme thing I have ever done and probably will do! It was damn scary, especially the second time!
I thought I would add these 2 links to show you what I am talking about!
Firstly, this is me (yes Digg users do go outside!). I am sitting on the right side of the raft, in a black t-shirt, second in line.
http://uk.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20& ...
Secondly, I uploaded some highlights from the DVD that I purchased at the end of the trip.
http://uk.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20& ...
Finally, a month after I went rafting Karleigh Baldock died doing the same thing. She slipped out of her life jacket when she was being lifted back into the raft :(. So sad!
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,2204 ...
The Zambezi rapids are the most extreme commercial rapids in the world, of that there is no doubt!
Stay safe all! - SgtOompa, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2They forgot to add River Road in Cabin John, Maryland

- kacymartin, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2The Yough is pretty bad ass. Double Hydraulics and Dimple FTW
- camb12, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1The main fork of the Salmon isn't bad either, many huge rapids.
- HolyMan28, on 01/07/2009, -1/+2If only I had the guts..
- sizzzzlerz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Although its the Colorado, just not the part depicted in TFA, rafting through the Grand Canyon portion is the experience of a lifetime. Big water and unsurpassed scenery from day 1 to the end of the trip.
- suburbancow, on 01/07/2009, -1/+2Mirror?
- poppyrich, on 01/07/2009, -1/+2working now...
- nharpe, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1I have no doubt about that. I don't have any whitewater kayak experience....yet. I can't wait to dig in though. I plan to take a couple clinics in the spring, probably on the New.
- gfelstein55, on 05/22/2009, -0/+0I was simply ecstatic to find the Snake River in Idaho figure in the list of top ten places to go whitewater rafting. The reason being that I have been planning a river rafting excursion to the place. Snake River and Salmon River sure make for a wonderful place to enjoy watersports, especially river rafting. Here's a tour I am planning to take up, but am not sure: http://www.ekoventure.com/trips/united_states-idah ... Any advice on the same?
- JamesBondJr, on 01/08/2009, -0/+0aww yeah, Gauley Fest. Amazing every year, except I gotta say that kayaking the gauley beats rafting. no offense :)
- hagiaso, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0I forget the name of the river, but up by Denali in Alaska has been my favorite trip by far.
- TheUnlearn, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0I wish i could raft the Gauley. Went down the New a few years ago but i've never had the chance to go for Gauley season.
- chadsmith729, on 01/07/2009, -6/+2Buried as inaccurate, digg users rarely go outside.
