      Trust me, many times I climb 10+, just depends on the boulder or the path followed.

      This is called bouldering. Contrary to what you've seen on cliffhanger and the vertical limit, rock climbing isn't about EXTREEEEME SPORTS DUDE. It's a physical challenge of you versus yourself. Bouldering takes normal Free climbing, where climbs are rated as class 5.x on the Yosemite Decimal System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yosemite_Decimal_Syst ... at least in the US.

      For many years 5.10 was the hardest climb assumed to be humanly possible, and that's where the bouldering Hueco (V-scale) STARTS. A V0 bouldering problem is roughly equivilent to the crux of a 5.10 climb. Back off the keyboard and head to your local climbing gym, see how many WEEKS it takes you to even begin to approach basic (V0, V1, V2) bouldering problems. Most of the guys I boulder with on a regular basis can bust out 20 consecutive pullups on demand, 10 from their fingertips, just because the movies don't cover it doesn't mean it's not harder than anything you've done in the past decade.

      Also on a side note this article is bunk, all of the photos are from a calendar called "Stone Nudes", and I've never heard of one person who feels it necessary to climb nude.

      • EvilJelloMan, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Spatula - watch some of the old Sharma bouldering videos sometime. Specifically Rampage. He climbs a V-reallyhard bouldering problem with no shoes (his ripped) and at the end he states that his skin felt way stickier than climbing rubber.

        The reason most people don't climb with no shoes is because it's painful as hell, not because it's impossible.

        Also, look into Deep Water Soloing. I've seen videos of people sending hard 12's shoeless.

        Get 5 feet up on a V10 and tell me it's not a challenge. Height isn't the greatest factor in difficulty.

      But when you're a photographer trying to capture the "pure" form of interaction between the climber and the rock, I would think bouldering would be a pretty natural choice.

    Nude rock climbing would be called "nude free soloing" - since that's what it's called when you climb without a rope (and the "nude" on the front of it describes what you are when you wear no clothes, for those who aren't familiar with the term)

    Also, climbing without shoes is painful and counterproductive. None of these problems can be especially difficult if they're doing them barefoot... you can't edge or smear a damn thing.
