- chromerium, on 05/19/2009, -1/+19He wasn't sick, he was injured. RTFA. He was given sick days as a precaution by his osteopath, who then said he'd be fine to surf. when his condition improved.
Someone had covered his shift, he'd called ahead and made sure that it was covered, so he went ahead and surfed while he was there.
Whats the big deal?
Other than the unfair dismissal. - protogenxl, on 05/19/2009, -0/+7EPIC WIN
- AdeleMor, on 05/19/2009, -3/+9clearly he was saving the kangaroo: http://digg.com/pets_animals/Man_saves_drowning_Ka ...
koala bear foster's shrimp's on the barbee... and i'm spent. - fabriciom, on 05/19/2009, -1/+6Stop complaining and get back to work!
- jennyvan, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5When I had my daughter I was on 6 weeks of "sick leave" per doctors orders (had a c-section). I was back at the gym by week 5, even though I was on medical leave. I couldn't get fired for that even if my boss did see me. I wasn't "sick" but I couldn't exactly go back to work either. It's not like the guy called in one day claiming he was sick to go attend a surfing competition. Sick leave does not always mean "flat on your ass"...
- nahsrocketeer75, on 05/19/2009, -1/+6Let's call this pulling a Spicoli.
- winter360, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4why do i not live in Australia?
- andoru, on 05/19/2009, -1/+5Misleading title and description. The Industrial Relations Commission did come to any finding that its "OK to surf while on sick leave". It ruled on a single specific instance involving unique circumstances - that the surfing was done on a day off anyway, that the medical reason for being off work no longer applied on the day in question, and that the employee returned to work the next day even though the certificate covered them.
- RobertGoulet, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4Read the article dude, the day he was surfing was a day he didn't have work scheduled normally anyway.
- borez, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4That's sick dude
- beachsouthpaw, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3Finally, a country that understands me.
- Mship, on 05/19/2009, -2/+5Hmmm and here I thought that many companies gave people sick leave so that someone wouldnt come into work and geting other employees sick. I guess if you have conjunctivitis you should just go to work and touch everything you can, maybe even give people hugs.
- jmarkow, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4Used to use sick days as surf days... now I'm laid off.
- Suspected, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2I liked your thinking, AbsurdParadox. People should be able to get fired based on their race, gender, or ethnicity. You should consider joining the KKK.
- Rockyn, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2I like to surf on the clock. I used to have a job marking out underground utilities, which basically consisted of driving around in a truck all day. I would keep my board in the back and say that each of my stops took longer than they did so that I could surf during the work day. It was awesome.
- GrimReeper, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2RTFA: "The day he surfed was a rostered day off; "
He had the day off regardless of his injury and he was also assured that surfing wouldn't worsen his injury. He showed up the next day able to work so I don't see what all the fuss is about. - ScottMcIntyre, on 05/19/2009, -6/+8Maybe... but I'd rather be at least a couple of feet distance away when any ill surfer comes back in from the waves!
- JoshReflek, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2If i'm on sick leave, it's none of your damn bidniz what im doing.
- papastout, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2***** yeah, Eddie would go!
- domfosnz, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2yeah, the more points you can score at cricket, the better your chance of getting in.
- webcrumb, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2They have bears in Australia now?
I bet the bastards are venomous, too...
:P - webcrumb, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2You can't get enough points?
- Suspected, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2You tried too hard.
- joelcass, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1You didn't read it did you.....
I bet he's more thorough than you....even when he was sick - inactive, on 05/19/2009, -4/+4Yeah I guess they didn't want him spreading his "bad back" around....
- bdes14, on 05/19/2009, -0/+0I did that all the time at my last job and everybody laughed at me when I came in with a bad sunburn
- nullcodes, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1Alright, who here's surfing without taking a sick day?
- GForeman, on 08/13/2009, -0/+0Awesome!
Good ol' Aussies. Bummer to see no surfers made the top 10 of all time though:

- twisterrust, on 05/19/2009, -2/+2Dude... ...lame
- Rockyn, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1that is A mazing.
- Suspected, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1That's rad, dude. I used to own this one company, it was called Enron, and I... oh wait.
- Subduction, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1I hear ya bro -- I used to have a job in the accounting department at a company that sold underground utilities, and I set up a few fake companies and would send invoices from them, and then pay those invoices with corporate checks. I would say that each of those companies was legitimate so I could embezzle all I wanted. It was awesome.
- Vivifyer, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1If howard was still in, he would have been sacked, then rehired on lower wages :P
- AbsurdParadox, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1Suspected, your logic is ridiculous.
You obviously don't understand freedom and property rights -- I should be able to hire/fire whom ever I want using ANY criteria.
You obviously didn't understand that I don't agree with someone using those practices -- they simply have that right, it doesn't mean I agree.
You obviously don't understand how the free market would punish those whom employed such practices. - mhummel, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1Because you haven't passed the supremely difficult citizenship test yet?
Here's a sample test:
1) Who is "The Don"?
2) Australia's national drink is:
a) Foster's
b) VB
c) Tea
d) Lemon Ruski
3) How many stars are on the Australian flag and what do they represent?
4) Australia's favourite sport is:
a) Cricket
b) Rugby
c) Tennis
d) Any sport in which Australians are currently doing well at
5) The most dangerous animal in Australia is:
a) Box Jellyfish
b) Saltwater crocodile
c) Taipan
d) Dropbear
e) All of the above - Kytro, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1I have to disagree with that.
- AbsurdParadox, on 05/19/2009, -6/+2I think any company should be able to fire anyone for any reason (assuming it doesn't go against any contracts, etc).
Having said that, I would never work for such a ***** company. - inactive, on 05/19/2009, -9/+2What *****.
If this ***** has enough energy to surf, he has enough to show up for work
