- BrettFromTibet, on 08/27/2008, -4/+60Rodney Mullen is my childhood hero and the biggest sports innovator in the past 100 years. That guy literally invented modern street skating - the ollie, the ollie kickflip, the impossible, the casper, the dark slide, the pressure flip, etc.
- kirbs2001, on 08/27/2008, -1/+42Rodney Mullen is the only guy who can wear socks that high and still look cool
- aspec, on 08/27/2008, -1/+32YEAH!
Seriously, what was with the guy who always had to be the first to say "Yeah"? - zookee, on 08/27/2008, -3/+28Impeccable even 22 years ago. It is amazing how he was able to do some of those tricks with no nose, tail, or concave... just a flat piece of wood.
- chrissku, on 08/27/2008, -0/+19Dugg for transferring a videotape to a computer. I don't know if I remember what a vcr looks like.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 08/27/2008, -1/+15Wow! Some amazing moves here... The part at 3.20 when Mullen does a handstand on the board is awesome. No wonder the crowd is cheering. Classic stuff!
- hawk3210, on 08/27/2008, -0/+14Easily the best skateboarder EVER. If you disagree, at least agree that he's the best at what he does.
Also, he invented damn near every street skating move out there today. How the hell can you argue with that?
Also, he invented physics. - jessem19, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7In my eyes, Rodney Mullen remains the most talented skater since the sport was created.
- jroowizzle, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7actually
rodney mullen is as close to the best skater in the world as you can get.
he may not be the best at the "modern street skating", but the fact is that he can still do it pretty well.
that being said, I cant name or even think of anyone who is as awesome or even anywhere near as awesome at flatland and freestyle skateboarding as rodney.
the dude is the best non-vert skater alive. - AwwSchucks, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8oh damn i live in westwood
- BROTHERD69, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7YEAH!
- DigxDug, on 08/27/2008, -4/+10YEAH!
- Foenetik, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7The G.O.A.T.
- Vodd9, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6I know this was in the YouTube comments, but you'll notice that he doesn't miss a single trick, which is quite a feat, especially on his level and I think that everyone who has some experience in skateboarding will agree with me.
- neverender, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5I have the Plan B box set on VHS, and that's actually a scene from Plan B - Second Hand Smoke. My favorite scene of rodney is from Virtual Reality, watch it here:
http://www.rodneymullen.net/videos/watch.php?filen ... - tr909, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Just want to plug his book "The Mutt : How to Skateboard without Killing yourself". Seriously one of the best reads ever. Dude is way deeper than skating.
- sourwood, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5I saw him demo around this time on the Swatch tour in New Orleans in the Esplanade Mall. Dude is unreal. Back then all of these flip-tricks were called "freestyle." Mullen and one other cat had Powell boards which were smaller than other boards and shaped like all of the boards you see now. Rodney was a true pioneer.
- KiwiMark, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5So before his time.
- xkingADROCKx, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Anyone ever seen Dogtown and the Z-Boys?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGMA-bjetrQ - estacado, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Gleaming The Cube.
- sourwood, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4The Mullen board did have a nose and a tail and was slightly concaved, from what I remember. And was very light because it was much smaller than the other Powell boards.
- IanPR, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5I like to think of him as the Tom Morello of skateboarding.
Just like Tom, Rodney uses the skateboard in ways not thought possible to produce amazing results.
I love these 2 men :P - awfulgrace, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Wow - I can't believe anything dealing w/ Westwood, NJ made the front page of Digg.
Reppin' the hometown! - louiebaur, on 08/27/2008, -2/+5This is old school yo!
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3That' guy is one of the best if not the best one. I really liked the videos, never saw it before
- ChrisLondon, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I remember this set from one of the really early Powell Peralta videos. It made me dizzy then!
- dubbakec, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, Rodney Mullen is straight filthy, this is one of my favorite collections of his tricks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sNmQDuerLY - bloodomen13, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Thrashin!!!!
- thumperings, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3huge socks and tiny shorts. That's just how we rolled . luv the guy in the crowd... YAh! yah YAH ya ya YAH yah ....YAh! yah YAH ya ya YAH yah
- xutopia, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3For those who don't understand why this guy is revered you should understand that he invented lots of the tricks he performed in that video. He pretty much invented and popularized most of what makes skateboarding today. This movie is not just some guy doing tricks, it's a video of someone setting the pace than everyone had to follow.
- rjhomuth, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I cannot digg this because I am an enjoi fan.
- bloodomen13, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Alan Gelfand created the ollie for vert skaters (initially called a 'no-hand aerial' and then named the 'ollie' by friends)
Rodney Mullen created the flatland ollie (originally called the 'ollie-pop')
I dunno why Kelsosmythe is getting dug down. Technically he's not incorrect. - kelsosmythe, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Alan Gelfand invented the ollie.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Only bitches haven't.
- MattBot5000, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2This man is no man; he is a god.
- DaviDTC, on 08/27/2008, -2/+4omg old!
- awfulgrace, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Guns, Westwood? WTF?!?
I grew up in Westwood and it's Mayberry! - telcontar, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I actually saw him do a demo like that back at a mall in Dallas, TX back in 1986 or 87! (I was twelve.) He was doing a promotional mall tour for Swatch(!) which was one of his sponsors at the time. I had just started skating that summer too... and seeing HIM do THAT on a board, not to mention it's happening right in front of me was inspiring. Like seeing a good work of art kind of inspiration is what I mean to say. Because beyond the mind blowing tricks, it was his style that I remember more than anything because it had such an artistic flavor to it.
(Too bad freestyle skating seemed to die off so quickly back then.) - etsboy1, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2YEAAAAAH!!!!
- telcontar, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Me too! I still have the poster he signed from it. (I added my story of the whole thing further down.)
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3One of the all-time best skateboarders ever!
- notmiya, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2the "yeeeaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh" from 3:08 - 3:11 is epic.
- themadhatter444, on 08/27/2008, -6/+8That run was unbelievably consistent and kick ass. Rodney Mullen is great and all, but most skaters really don't like when people compare freestyle skateboarding to modern street skating. Two completely different ball games. No disrespect, but Rodney Mullen is absolutely not the best skateboarder out there. Maybe the most innovative, but different strokes for different folks.
Juss sayin. Bury on. - mrjofo, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2me too :)
- ascension, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2don't even compare the two, they have completely different styles.
The whole Daewon Vs Mullen was just media hype to sell videos. - Misinformant, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2What Westwood are you thinking of? I live in Westwood and the only guns I've ever carried fired little foam darts capped with suction cups. The most serious crime here is letting your parking meter expire.
- cmainiac666, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I never said that you ***** moron- I said he never RODE HIS OWN BOARD. read the comment before you spout off.
- Phylodome, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Did you SEE that SHIRT?
- SPRFRKR, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Powell-Peralta had only a few "freestyle" model boards which Rodney rode, but generally had the large round boards with skaters like Steve Cabellaro riding them as the vast majority of models sold. Even then, freestyle was just a small offshoot of street/vert being a leftover, yet evolved, style of skating popular in the 70s which ironically PP helped phase out with the likes of Tony Hawk and the Bones Brigade.
