- EggNogIceCream, on 05/12/2008, -3/+129I think they broke the first rule of Fight Club.
- digggthat, on 05/12/2008, -1/+72and second as well
- imitokay, on 05/12/2008, -1/+44short answer, yes
long answer, yesssss - DeathfireD, on 05/12/2008, -1/+37Most real life fights aren't clean or manly at all. It's not like boxing or ultimate fighting you see on TV where the fighters are trained. These are normal everyday guys fighting.
- Rodex123, on 05/12/2008, -6/+47Im a computer science major right now, this is really starting to make me put life into perspective. Am I really working so hard for everything they already have, am I going to feel this numb?
- bagboyrebel, on 05/12/2008, -2/+34If you were paying attention this club has been around since BEFORE the movie came out, which means they didn't do it to be trendy.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -17/+48Uh wouldn't the first rule of fight club rule out giving interviews to ESPN? Ironically, the real world fight clubs really exist only so the members can talk about them... it's just some trendy thing. They fight like girls in the video, too.
- killbotX, on 05/12/2008, -2/+24its like football or any other sport but they just get straight to the point.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -4/+22I think this is the kind of fight club where they mutually agree not to hit each other and just like rolling around half nude with other men.
- iie.wakarimasen, on 05/12/2008, -2/+22well the movie and book is a little misrepresented by the fact that its mainly about the manifestation of Tyler Durden's anti consumer ideals through the narrator's own unconscious self, albeit the "real life" fight club does look to support these things somewhat also.
- karapuz, on 05/12/2008, -2/+20They also broke rules 4,5 and 6
The first rule of Fight Club is - you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is - you DO NOT talk about Fight Club. Third rule of Fight Club, someone yells Stop!, goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule, only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule, one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule, no shirt, no shoes. Seventh rule, fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule, if this is your first night at Fight Club, you have to fight. - JamJosh, on 05/12/2008, -3/+22Of course the experience isn't going to be completely like the movie. But if you've never experienced what its like to be in a fight and be tested then of course you're not going to be able to feel what this experience is like. It might not be able to be explained by psychologists or sociologists, but there is something fulfilling to men to be able to beat each other and gain a sense of bonding. Sitting over a computer and compiling and manipulating data all day, weeks and months on end, may be okay for others but for some it becomes mundane and boring. Fighting, although viewed as adolescent by some, may be the primal thing missing in everyday life and what keeps us sane enough to function. I can't explain it but I realize why these people keep doing what they are doing. Its not about killing someone else...its something else that is indescribable for me...maybe its a sense of proving yourself or just a change that puts you in touch of reality, that we are still animals,...who knows? But old new or not it is still relevant and more of these should spring up. Could probably help all the up tight people in the world vent themselves rather than cause huge world problems.
- chkdg8, on 05/12/2008, -7/+21Already covered. Didn't you realize? http://digg.com/tech_news/Silicon_Valley_Fight_Clu ...
- knightblade2oo4, on 05/12/2008, -0/+14actually it's not.
it's You Do Not Ask Questions. - pixarfan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+16My buddies and I did this for a while... till a cop showed up at the park we were doing it... asked what the hell was going on. After we explained it all he let us get back to it, the next week he was there to watch, with a buddy. The week after 2 more folks came to watch. It all ended with neighbors of the park complained as they were worried is someone got hurt they would sue...
It was oddly fun...(We had head pads, pussed out a bit) - bagelmaster, on 05/12/2008, -1/+14Man I just got that weird camera circling Tyler Durdan thing going on in my head!
- inkswamp, on 05/12/2008, -2/+15Doubtful. If you're thoughtful enough to pose those kinds of questions to yourself then you're probably not going to feel numb about anything you chose to do. But anyone who thinks they've got it tough because they work a computer job needs to go live in a third world country for a few years where fighting for every scrap is a day-to-day reality. I wonder about people who start to feel numb about their jobs, if they just fail to appreciate what they have and how not hard their life really is--at least from a global perspective.
- Schmidtopolis, on 05/12/2008, -1/+13I thought Fight Club was best summed up in one line:
“It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”
It seems this is an ongoing theme in Chuck Palahniuk's books... especially Choke. It's the idea the humiliation is only humiliation if we allow ourselves to be victims. In the words of Victor Mancini: "What would Jesus NOT do". - inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12"We had head pads, pussed out a bit"
Beats having a broken jaw. - cl2yp71c, on 05/12/2008, -5/+18This has been already on the front page, recently too.
T_T - xdevit, on 05/12/2008, -1/+11After the fight they watch the fights on a big screen tv.... (25" tv)
- getouttamyfog, on 05/12/2008, -3/+14His name is Robert Paulson... His name is Robert Paulson...
- trogdor282, on 05/12/2008, -1/+10Naah. Aggression is fun, that's all. People play tackle footbal and box for fun, why not this?
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Well, competition is derived from probably the first form of competition which was more than likely, fighting.
- Theycallmetak, on 05/12/2008, -2/+11The book was published in 1996.
cheers - tuntcickle, on 05/12/2008, -3/+10Or did it out of no relation to the ***** book OR movie
- Anpheus, on 05/12/2008, -2/+9Lay off the drugs, even if it's just booze.
- DonJohnTom, on 05/12/2008, -2/+9props to these guys, they know what they want and they do it in a safe and controlled environment, I mean honestly would you rather have this or that ***** who's always looking for a fight at some bar.
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7well you can say that sports are just evolved forms of fighting, where the chance of getting injured is significantly lower.
- bokep, on 05/12/2008, -2/+11I'm only 19 but going into engineering I can totally see myself in my 30s being pissed off at my life and doing something like this.
- Louis11, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8Comp Sci Major here too, wanna start a fight club? :P
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -3/+9I would love to see you fight because from what I understand, you obviously fight like a professional. Don't talk ***** unless you can back it up and show us.
- choopie911, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I was going to comment about how their fights weren't too impressive, and almost seemed like a humour thing (the plungers, etc) and something that anyone could do...but the dulled knives thing made the second guess that. I don't think I'd willingly put myself in a knife fight, dulled or not.
- TheNakedChef, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Maybe because what people need is to fight for something, because when you stop fighting life loses meaning to people.
- kaleesh, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5Another comp engin major here. but i'm up for the couch potato and BEER! Those with me say Aye!
- Haroshia, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6Actually, the point of the movie is the coming of age of the narrator fighting against the overblown adolescent manifestation of his primal urges that is Tyler. It's about him waking up, blowing that part of his brain out, and taking Marla into his arms and being a grownup. I saw it as a cautionary tale of what is possible if we keep sheltering people from the world and isolating them from primal feeling and confronting their own personal Tylers. They'll always find a way to manifest, and all of us males aren't truly men until we can confront and accept our primal urges.
When I look at these morons, I see a bunch of man-children who never grew up. I see a bunch of coddled mama's boys working out their aggression and repressed sexuality on each other. Hopefully they grow up, and grow out of this childish behavior. - bokep, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5If you actually watched the video you'd know that this fight club started before the movie.
- AgentGulo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Aye!!!
- aceakm, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Uhm, dull knives are still KNIVES. I was implying why the ***** they would use knives or weapons to begin with. ESPECIALLY considering that they have family and a job.
- megarobotguy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4It's not just about hurting someone. It's more about proving to yourself and your peers as to how far your body and mind can take it before you or your opponent has to give up. It's gradifying to have a nice job, family and wealth but in the end you will always have that primal need to prove to another person that you are better than them. Also, speaking from experience office jobs are boring as HELL! This coming from the guy that's looking over legal documents as we speak at 4 in the morning.
- spearce, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4I actually was part of a Fight Club while I was stationed in Germany in the military. It's hard to explain why I enjoyed it so much. The fights, although real pain was inflicted, were more fun than scary. As soon as someone was finished all they had to do was say stop and the fight was over. So an element of control was always available to a fighter which is not true of normal street fights. Thus the fear that most people have of fighting is alleviated. The physical exertion in connection to the visceral brawling for domination really did effect me in new ways that I enjoyed. I felt masculine, strong, and confident after a fight. Frankly I miss those nights as I've never felt more alive then when i was laughing my ass off while punching my best friend in the face as he's laughing too. Unless you've experienced something like that (or feel the unexplainable want to do something like this) it's hard to explain. There's something instinctual about it. You're not your ***** khakis.
- the7ak3, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3So i'm pretty sure a lot of you don't really understand this. If they were to use real weapons or not have any equipment on, many of them would be rendered useless at their jobs, being fired soon after. The whole point of this is to get yer stress out, and feed yer primal need to punch some bitch in the face that annoys you all day at the office. If you don't understand this need, you have obviously never consumed alcohol before or you are a woman.
- HappyProgrammer, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6I am 34 yr. old software engineer. Never in my life would I consider joining a fight club. Bored? There aren't enough hours in day for me to give to my many interesting projects I have lined up, both personal and work related.
People who do this sort of thing are mentally unstable IMHO. If you can mostly keep it together then you dont have to worry about turning into retards like these people and joining a fight club. - spearce, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3you have no idea what you're missing.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5They were fighting with dull knives! How and the ***** can you say they fight like girls. You sir have obviously never been in a real fight, maybe you should only talk about ***** that you know something about. I'd like to see you in a fight, I bet after a few punches fatigue would set in and all you'd do is start slapping.
- cococrispies, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3You should wait to call someone a moron until you actually view the clip. Because now you end up being the moron.
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -3/+8They still could've based it on the book.
- schnikies79, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3And there are probably groups that did this 500 years ago and 5000 years ago so whats your point? That doesn't make this any less interesting.
There is nothing new under the sun - chanop, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4very old. This is on digg every month. I remember seeing it on RealTV a long time ago
