Real Fight Club: In Silicon Valley!
coedmagazine.com — Wow. Apparently, life really does become meaningless when you ’re at the top of your game, you’ve got the house, car, wife, kids and whatever the f*ck else you want. None of that means sh*t compared to the free gift of pain–or so says these Silicon Valley desk-jockeys, who’ve set up their own “fight club,” in an attempt to return to the roots...

For me, these "garage fighting" expressions means that the new era of computers can be world wide available, but we don't know about them.- Anpheus, on 05/12/2008, -2/+8Lay off the drugs, even if it's just booze.
- PaulOwen, on 05/12/2008, -4/+1"Real" Silicon Valley Fight Club?
That'll be The Valley Gay Fight Club, where they wrestle each other naked in barns, to the delight of onlookers.
First Rule of Fight Club is: No scratching or biting!
- iie.wakarimasen, on 05/12/2008, -2/+20well the movie and book is a little misrepresented by the fact that its mainly about the manifestation of Tyler Durden's anti consumer ideals through the narrator's own unconscious self, albeit the "real life" fight club does look to support these things somewhat also.
- Schmidtopolis, on 05/12/2008, -1/+11I thought Fight Club was best summed up in one line:
“It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.”
It seems this is an ongoing theme in Chuck Palahniuk's books... especially Choke. It's the idea the humiliation is only humiliation if we allow ourselves to be victims. In the words of Victor Mancini: "What would Jesus NOT do". - Haroshia, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Actually, the point of the movie is the coming of age of the narrator fighting against the overblown adolescent manifestation of his primal urges that is Tyler. It's about him waking up, blowing that part of his brain out, and taking Marla into his arms and being a grownup. I saw it as a cautionary tale of what is possible if we keep sheltering people from the world and isolating them from primal feeling and confronting their own personal Tylers. They'll always find a way to manifest, and all of us males aren't truly men until we can confront and accept our primal urges.
When I look at these morons, I see a bunch of man-children who never grew up. I see a bunch of coddled mama's boys working out their aggression and repressed sexuality on each other. Hopefully they grow up, and grow out of this childish behavior.
- Schmidtopolis, on 05/12/2008, -1/+11I thought Fight Club was best summed up in one line:
- NachoBusiness, on 05/12/2008, -15/+47Uh wouldn't the first rule of fight club rule out giving interviews to ESPN? Ironically, the real world fight clubs really exist only so the members can talk about them... it's just some trendy thing. They fight like girls in the video, too.
- DeathfireD, on 05/12/2008, -1/+35Most real life fights aren't clean or manly at all. It's not like boxing or ultimate fighting you see on TV where the fighters are trained. These are normal everyday guys fighting.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/12/2008, -2/+32If you were paying attention this club has been around since BEFORE the movie came out, which means they didn't do it to be trendy.
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -3/+7They still could've based it on the book.
- aceakm, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1Or read about the movie coming out or being developed.
- tuntcickle, on 05/12/2008, -3/+9Or did it out of no relation to the ***** book OR movie
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -3/+7They still could've based it on the book.
- trogdor282, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9Naah. Aggression is fun, that's all. People play tackle footbal and box for fun, why not this?
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -3/+8I would love to see you fight because from what I understand, you obviously fight like a professional. Don't talk ***** unless you can back it up and show us.
- AwesomePossum, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4They were fighting with dull knives! How and the ***** can you say they fight like girls. You sir have obviously never been in a real fight, maybe you should only talk about ***** that you know something about. I'd like to see you in a fight, I bet after a few punches fatigue would set in and all you'd do is start slapping.
- choopie911, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I was going to comment about how their fights weren't too impressive, and almost seemed like a humour thing (the plungers, etc) and something that anyone could do...but the dulled knives thing made the second guess that. I don't think I'd willingly put myself in a knife fight, dulled or not.
- jaychuck, on 05/12/2008, -15/+2Tyler Durden isn't real.

- EggNogIceCream, on 05/12/2008, -3/+125I think they broke the first rule of Fight Club.
- digggthat, on 05/12/2008, -1/+69and second as well
- karapuz, on 05/12/2008, -2/+18They also broke rules 4,5 and 6
The first rule of Fight Club is - you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is - you DO NOT talk about Fight Club. Third rule of Fight Club, someone yells Stop!, goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule, only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule, one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule, no shirt, no shoes. Seventh rule, fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule, if this is your first night at Fight Club, you have to fight.- bagelmaster, on 05/12/2008, -1/+12Man I just got that weird camera circling Tyler Durdan thing going on in my head!

- Rodex123, on 05/12/2008, -6/+46Im a computer science major right now, this is really starting to make me put life into perspective. Am I really working so hard for everything they already have, am I going to feel this numb?
- inkswamp, on 05/12/2008, -2/+15Doubtful. If you're thoughtful enough to pose those kinds of questions to yourself then you're probably not going to feel numb about anything you chose to do. But anyone who thinks they've got it tough because they work a computer job needs to go live in a third world country for a few years where fighting for every scrap is a day-to-day reality. I wonder about people who start to feel numb about their jobs, if they just fail to appreciate what they have and how not hard their life really is--at least from a global perspective.
- TheNakedChef, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Maybe because what people need is to fight for something, because when you stop fighting life loses meaning to people.
- inkswamp, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Which is kinda the point I was getting at. If you're doing something where you feel like you're not actively involved or challenged in some way, you've probably chosen to do something with your life that you don't really love. If you're thoughtful about the things you do and ask yourself those kinds of questions, you won't end up there in the first place.
- TheNakedChef, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Maybe because what people need is to fight for something, because when you stop fighting life loses meaning to people.

- HappyProgrammer, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6I am 34 yr. old software engineer. Never in my life would I consider joining a fight club. Bored? There aren't enough hours in day for me to give to my many interesting projects I have lined up, both personal and work related.
People who do this sort of thing are mentally unstable IMHO. If you can mostly keep it together then you dont have to worry about turning into retards like these people and joining a fight club.- kaleesh, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1mein gott u sound like a zombie. i'm training to be one.

- HaoTian, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Well... I'm a 31 year old software developer who LOVES competitive fighting.
Sure... I've got a ton of projects lined up that can keep my brain busy... but I need something to keep my body busy AND keep it linked with my mind. Fighting is PERFECT for that. When you get to higher levels, it's like chess (but with more blood).
It's not for everyone, but to say that people who enjoy this are mentally unstable is a generalization that shows you to be sheltered and ignorant.- cricket01, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Just started jui-jitsu a couple of months back for exactly the that reason. - schnikies79, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3And there are probably groups that did this 500 years ago and 5000 years ago so whats your point? That doesn't make this any less interesting.

- HaoTian, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Check your area for a mixed martial arts class (preferably one that has a team that competes regularly). I think you might end up disappointed if you go out for something like a generic "Kung Fu" or Taekwondo (not as much focus on actually fighting).

Because when you say that, you're lost perspective of life. These people are self destructive. - JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -2/+4None of these guys seem to hate their jobs. They're just stressed by the social aspect of it and feel the need to do what they do after that.
- jilei202, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1no ,let's blame it
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3well you have to be good at that thing you consider "real", which many of these guys probably aren't. I love the idea of being able to play in the NHL, but I know that I'm not physically capable and not talented enough, so I'll probably end up doing something that I'm actually good at.
Combining passion and skill is not as easy as many think.

Interesting form of stress relief. - JamJosh, on 05/12/2008, -3/+22Of course the experience isn't going to be completely like the movie. But if you've never experienced what its like to be in a fight and be tested then of course you're not going to be able to feel what this experience is like. It might not be able to be explained by psychologists or sociologists, but there is something fulfilling to men to be able to beat each other and gain a sense of bonding. Sitting over a computer and compiling and manipulating data all day, weeks and months on end, may be okay for others but for some it becomes mundane and boring. Fighting, although viewed as adolescent by some, may be the primal thing missing in everyday life and what keeps us sane enough to function. I can't explain it but I realize why these people keep doing what they are doing. Its not about killing someone else...its something else that is indescribable for me...maybe its a sense of proving yourself or just a change that puts you in touch of reality, that we are still animals,...who knows? But old new or not it is still relevant and more of these should spring up. Could probably help all the up tight people in the world vent themselves rather than cause huge world problems.
- mike23w, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2> Could probably help all the up tight people in the world vent themselves rather than cause huge world problems.
George Bush in Fight Club? - Genetico, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2I wanna fight you.
- megarobotguy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4It's not just about hurting someone. It's more about proving to yourself and your peers as to how far your body and mind can take it before you or your opponent has to give up. It's gradifying to have a nice job, family and wealth but in the end you will always have that primal need to prove to another person that you are better than them. Also, speaking from experience office jobs are boring as HELL! This coming from the guy that's looking over legal documents as we speak at 4 in the morning.
- CyclonusRIP, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1Being in a fight is only fulfilling if your life has lost all meaning. Even then there are a lot more constructive things to do to fulfill yourself than that.

- alphaeno, on 05/12/2008, -4/+3Its more about the competition than the thrill of pain or violence. Its just like MMA, Paintball, or Smash Brothers. There is always pain involved, but that is not the driving factor of doing that hobby.
FYI, I've been hurt worst playing Smash than Paintball or Martial Arts- megarobotguy, on 05/12/2008, -2/+5WFT? Did you just compare MMA to Smash Brothers? Please tell me you are joking.
- alphaeno, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1I did and I was joking...
also, I've never been physically harmed while playing smash brothers. - alphaeno, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Digg me down again

- chewrocka, on 05/12/2008, -6/+3Idiots, plain and simple.
- killbotX, on 05/12/2008, -2/+22its like football or any other sport but they just get straight to the point.
- santaliqueur, on 05/12/2008, -4/+3Yes, because EVERY sport is just a mask for fighting.
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Well, competition is derived from probably the first form of competition which was more than likely, fighting.
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7well you can say that sports are just evolved forms of fighting, where the chance of getting injured is significantly lower.
- santaliqueur, on 05/12/2008, -4/+3Yes, because EVERY sport is just a mask for fighting.
- pixarfan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+15My buddies and I did this for a while... till a cop showed up at the park we were doing it... asked what the hell was going on. After we explained it all he let us get back to it, the next week he was there to watch, with a buddy. The week after 2 more folks came to watch. It all ended with neighbors of the park complained as they were worried is someone got hurt they would sue...
It was oddly fun...(We had head pads, pussed out a bit)- 1randomguyO8, on 05/12/2008, -0/+11"We had head pads, pussed out a bit"
Beats having a broken jaw. - sanemadman, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0WTF were you doing in a park? See, there is a difference between these guys and a bunch of "buddies" getting together....
- 1randomguyO8, on 05/12/2008, -0/+11"We had head pads, pussed out a bit"
- sthang, on 05/12/2008, -9/+6Extremely lame. What is so difficult about signing up to train at a gym and learning a proper art (muay thai, jiu jitsu, or etc.) and then competing/partaking in local smoker or amateur matches? It's actually pretty hysterical to watch out of shape guys slap one another with their sloppy technique and uncoordinated strikes.
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1...because this takes much less time and effort?
- Cerebron, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1I've seen people learn some martial arts, and to an extent, actually fighting like this regularly will teach you more than learning karate/muay thai/jiu jitsu, unless you actually use those arts in actual fights regularly.
- DeathJux, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, why do anything when you could pay someone to teach you?
- PresidentSoup, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2If you watched the video you would see the sociological analysis of fighting this way to fulfill primal urges. Putting two inexperienced men in a ring and letting them go at it with only instincts is a purer experience than trained professionals with years of technique ingrained in their minds.
- spearce, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2picking up a martial art requires training and dedication that these guys may not want or have the time to give. they want to do this stuff when they have the time. it's like playing in a pickup basketball game or riding your bike on the weekend. You wait all week for it, but you're not training for a team or a race. you just want to dribble the ball for a while or take a long ride. These guys just want to punch someone in the face or clock you with a dust buster. i completely understand.
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1...because this takes much less time and effort?
- JustinPM, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3I think it all boils down to primal urges. Guys primarily were hunter-gatherers so back in the day it probably wasn't much to get the ***** pounded out of you. If you had a problem with somebody not too long ago, the idea was to go behind the shed and beat the crap out of each other. Right now we have a culture of vanity, even in men.
- m4xn00b, on 05/12/2008, -5/+1welcome to last week.
- metaliq, on 05/12/2008, -7/+3This is basically a rant.
Palhuniuk writes regurgitated pulp niche fiction.
I thought the movie Fight Club was a lot better than the book... and, even though, the ideas were nothing "new".
(I just cant stand that guy... he's the slipknot of writing --- Slipknot fans seem to think that they are the best metal band in the world because they hadn't heard any others. Same goes for Chuck...)- aelias, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3OK, I'll bite, who's better at tongue-in-cheek nihilism?
- Rikm, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Dugg because I'd like to read stuff by other writers like Chuck.
I think Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Acid House, etc.) has a similar tone to Palhuniuk, but his stories tend to be about a close group of people tearing each other apart rather than the self-destruction of a single character.

- chillzinsurfer1, on 05/12/2008, -7/+3Rule #1 You do not talk about Fight Club
Rule #2 You do not talk about Fight Club
Seems pretty self explanatory to me...- DeathJux, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2You broke both rules, *****.
- tuntcickle, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3jesus christ, you're literally the tenth person to make that comment

- 1randomguyO8, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1If you like watching people bash each other up then watch felony fights. It's pretty hardcore. Heres a link to one of the fights http://www.killsometime.com/video/video.asp?ID=454 NSFW
- ralphthemagi, on 05/12/2008, -3/+0Kevin and Jay need to set this up for the next Digg meetup.
- aceakm, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4Wtf why are they using dull knives?! Or weapons at all?!
- megarobotguy, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2Unlike the movie fight club these guys want to have a family and job to come back to.
- aceakm, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4Uhm, dull knives are still KNIVES. I was implying why the ***** they would use knives or weapons to begin with. ESPECIALLY considering that they have family and a job.
- megarobotguy, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2Unlike the movie fight club these guys want to have a family and job to come back to.
- xdevit, on 05/12/2008, -1/+11After the fight they watch the fights on a big screen tv.... (25" tv)
- exYU, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3The first rule of fight club is....NOT IN THE FACE!! OWWWW!!
- azneggrollz, on 05/12/2008, -2/+0saw this a few years ago on the news...the exact same club
- m0d0, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Fight Club is only the beginning. Soon they'll call it project mayhem.
I'm all for the over sensitive 21st century male getting back in touch with his primordial roots... but toilet seats!!! Come on guys!! -
