- aguabonita, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4There are a lot of "bitchin" waves on the North Shore of Oahu in the winter time. The west and north facing beaches of Hawaii (and California to a lesser degree) are known for there very consistent, high quality waves during this time of year as that is when the storms are moving through the higher latitudes (around the Kamchatka Peninsula and Aleutian Islands) of the northern hemisphere and generating a lot of swell energy. Plus, they have a 13 day waiting period from which the judges can pick the days they want the surfers to compete.
