- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hell, for some of us, a sport is just getting up from Digg to get a glass of water and refill our cereal bowls
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, you probably have to worry more about not getting jokes. Seems to be a common problem.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't suppose a heat resistent suit capable of surviving hours in flaming hot magma is on the list? Can you even get that at REI?
- xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was there in 1980, sitting on a roof watching it erupt in the distance. Still have some of the ash collected from the lawn.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe you should get a dictionary because by definition, "sport" is any physical activity you do for fun.
- Synchro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a) because it is there
b) because it would be really cool to be able to walk up to the rim of an active volcanoe, one of the few in the world that you could.
c) because from the parking lot it is only 5 miles and a few thousand feet up to get to the edge of the rim, unlike the other mts in the area.
If it is still open to climbing next year, I am going to try and do it. There is something about climbing an active volcanoe and be able to see her from that perspective. If you have never been to the Johnston Ridge Observatory there at the mountain it is simply mesmorizing, fascinating and breathtaking to see that mountain. - yuravian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just in case the volcano sends rocks over the rim.
I thought St. Helens was dormant. What gives? - splammo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1St. Helens is about as far from dormant as you can get without being erupting as we speak.
- bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Even if there were magma (it was an explosive ash eruption), I think it'd be the least of your worries - assuming it would erupt the same way it did in '80.

There are plenty of mountains throughout the area. Why do these idiots want to climb an active volcano?

So we can pretend to be Frodo and Sam at the end of ROTK? - Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2deleted
- Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I dont know if you would consider "hiking/climbing" a sport. Yeah its physical, but i would consider it more of just an outdoor activity. But really, what do you say when you get done climbing some hill "Score one for the Cleveland Climbers Crew", I think for it to be a sport you kinda have to be able to actually win.
- bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Jokes are supposed to be funny, no? Oh, I get it!! LAVA SUITS AT REI!!1 ROFLOLZOZOLOLZOLZ
