- KrisStrong, on 07/20/2009, -5/+46Fedor should be #1.
PS -
Dana....sign Fedor!
OR
Buy Affliction! - scoot2006, on 07/20/2009, -0/+17No *****. Silva and GSP are good, but Fedor has lost 1 fight ever and that was only due to a cut (also wayyy back in the year 2000).
This might be a joke anyway, Rashad Evans is on there. Besides being boring, he's also not good. - inactive, on 07/20/2009, -4/+21fedor at 3.. this list is a joke.
- enozten, on 07/20/2009, -0/+15GSP consistently fights top 5 fighters. Nobody in the history of the sport has taken on a slew of tougher opponents.
And not only has he won, but he's dominated all of them except for 2 fights, one of which he was too young for and one of which he made a mental mistake. He avenged both losses in a brutal fashion.
#1 P4P until he loses!! he's straight up out of opponents. - bradleyland, on 07/20/2009, -0/+15I almost fell over when I read "Though many have criticized the relative dearth of top heavyweight talent and Emelianenko's opponent selection as knocks against his pound-for-pound status".
Are they ***** kidding? Fedor has taken out tons of big names, some of which are literally MMA legends. Guys with 5:1 win loss ratios at 25 fights and higher, yet he remains undefeated.
Mirko Filipovic
Antonio Nogueira
Kevin Randleman
Andre Arlovski
Tim Sylvia
The only thing missing from his list is a set of UFC wins, which, based on his performance in other arenas, shouldn't be terribly difficult if Dana White will come off of some of his ridiculous demands. I'm not saying I think he'll remain undefeated forever, but as far as heavyweights go, he's a ***** monster. - swicken, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13Yeah, as soon as I saw this on the front page I was like 'oh, Fedor first, then who'
When I saw he was third I was like 'wtf' - RumpleForeskin3, on 07/20/2009, -0/+12Blue text on orange background makes me want to UFC a web designer.
- brakes4turtles, on 07/20/2009, -3/+12This list is hilarious. Until he loses (nobody counts that cut) Fedor will be number 1, this is the only list I've seen say otherwise. Nice job ESPN. Expect to see Dragon, Silva, and GSP grouped together as the 3 best in UFC for a long time to come though.
- molamann, on 07/20/2009, -0/+8Are you blind? He's at #6.
- TylerDurden0, on 07/20/2009, -0/+8It says at the top of the article, "in association with SHERDOG". 'Guess you missed that.
- phyx726, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7It's boring because he dominates people. BJ jumps around different weight classes too much and should really just stay in LW where he can dominate.
- acegi, on 07/20/2009, -1/+824-4 > 30-0?
wtf? - chicagojack, on 07/20/2009, -4/+1111. Gina Carano
- Sutley, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7Machida's beaten:
-Stephen Bonnar
-Rich Franklin
-BJ Penn
-Tito Ortiz
-Rashad Evans
Franklin, Penn, and Evans were or are all top-tier fighters. Machida deserves the spot he has, he's never lost a round. - Gustomucho, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Well maybe if Alves was better he wouldn't get taken down so easily by GSP? GSP has the highest % of successful takedowns, his strength is on the ground, he train and fight accordingly.
What you are saying is Phelps is not a great swimmer because he can't dive from the high platform... - slippeh, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6The Big Nog and Cro Cop fights did take place years ago -- during the prime of these guys' careers. Fedor has only gotten better since then.
Also, Andre got knocked out by the b-level fighter because he was a ***** dumbass and showed his opponent no respect.. who the hell backs up while taking punches until they hit the cage? He got laid out as soon as he had nowhere to go. Side step, don't back up. Although it was funny to watch.. bell rings, like 12 seconds later hes knocked out.
As far as Fedor's opponents go..
Matt Lindland
2x Mark Coleman
Cro Cop
2x Nog
Heath Herring
Naoya Ogawa (4x Gold, 3x Bronze World Judo Champion, Silver in Olympic judo)
Not to mention Fedor is a 4 time World Sambo Champion, 8 time Russian Sambo Champion, dating back 12 years. Sure, he hasn't fought the best of the best, but he's fought the best of the best outside of UFC, and he's annihilated them all, while showing extreme skill in numerous facets of MMA. I haven't even mentioned his striking, which is absolutely ridiculous. Looks like the mofo just flicks his shoulders to punch. Extremely fast and extremely powerful. - shinda, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6If you go on espn.com and click MMA you get forwarded to sherdog.com
- SpazAttack5000, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Buried for thinking Houston Alexander can beat anyone.
- isxrc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Anderson Silva has the most devastating knees in MMA......he will answer his critics at UFC 101
- aenilius, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6you guys are hugging fedors nuts too tight.
I'm a huge fan of his, but he hasn't fought a quality opponent since his trilogy with big nog.
GSP and Anderson are the only ones destroying their entire divisions currently, and that damned brazillian is also starting his way through Light Heaviweight. If/when he beats my boy Forrest next month I am going to be sure and cry.
Go Forrest! You can ***** do it! - ToddSchishler, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5So because GSP fought to his own strengths (wrestling), and not Thiago's (stand-up), you're somehow discrediting him as a fighter?
Brilliant.
Thiago should have known that GSP was going to take this fight to the ground, and trained accordingly. It's obvious that his take-down defence was simply not up to par, and GSP exploited the hell out of that. - inevitablity, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5I personally don't find it boring, but I understand where some people can come off feeling that way becuase of GSP's dominance from beginning to end. To me though, it's a clinic on striking to take downs, done to technical perfection. It's truly amazing to watch, at least in my opinion.
- LiquidChimera, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6I think Penn should be a little higher, I mean he's fought successfully across 3 weight divisions, isn't that the definition of pound for pound.
- TwistyMcFister, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5sherdog.com has always been #1 news source for MMA for the last 10 years so that doesn't surprise me
- dysonlu, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Yeah, I wonder how Alves finished the last fight with a ***** up face -- he was only taken down. -sarcasm-
- covertbadger, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5"I wish the scoring was different in MMA, and it forced them to stand up and fight it out."
Uh, it wouldn't be MMA if you did that. What a ridiculous comment.
"Oh yea...where is Brock on that list?"
He has to earn it. Getting the belt isn't enough. He hasn't beaten any top-10 heavyweights yet - if he can beat Big Nog, and one of the decent up 'n' comers (e.g. Shane Carwin), he'll make it in due course. - guthbrand, on 07/20/2009, -3/+7GSP is definitely #1. No one has fought the level of competition that GSP has fought. Until recently, Fedor did not fight top heavyweight competition in years. GSP fights in the most stacked division and makes top contenders look like white belts. Aside from Franklin and Hendo, Silva has faced lackluster competition and still managed to put together 2 snooze-fests in his last two outings against cans.
- Dopeness, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Fedor will most likely never sign up for UFC. He's said time and time again that UFC contracts have way too many restrictions. Furthermore, with Fedor and Trump being the owners of M1, it's even more doubtful he'll move to UFC.
- KrisStrong, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4http://www.themmanews.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/ ...
- Gustomucho, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Until I see Machida seriously hurt, I think he deserve a spot. He is the most elusive fighter in the ring. People say he is boring to watch but I love his fighting style. Karate isn't something we see often in the octagon, even if it is less explosive than say Muay Thai, it is beautiful defencive stance.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4@covertbadger
Yeah the reason being is that Arlovski looked VERY good and much better after training with Freddie Roach. Most people at the time wanted to see him back in the UFC. He looked incredible against Ben Rothwell, who many people thought would kill Arlovski as he looked ***** before he fought him. After his complete destruction of Rothwell, many people saw his HUGE improvement. Also when he fought Fedor he was ranked #3 NOT the top contender as Affliction had stated...that is josh barnett who he will face on aug 1st. Sylvia was also ranked #7 at the time if im not mistaken. So since his return to MMA after his 2 year leave he has defeated 2 of the top 10 ranked HW fighter's and will VERY likely kill barnett on aug 1st. After that it will be 3 of the top 10 ranked HW's including the 2nd and 3rd ranked. - vigilance72, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Maybe you should be watching boxing or kickboxing?
Without the ground game it is no longer MMA. - SpazAttack5000, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4Nice try troll... not getting an angry response from me.
- damack, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4Affliction is heavily funded by Mark Cuban and Donald Trump.
Theres a lot more money between those two than anything the UFC can throw together they are the only billionaires in the business of MMA. The UFC won't be buying Affliction anytime soon. It could be the other way around I wouldn't put it past Donald Trump and Mark Cuban to buy up UFC for what to them is a drop in the bucket. - stopple, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3he has critics?
- msafi, on 07/22/2009, -0/+3Silva challenged himself to win against Cote and Leites while causing the least damage, if he could. In my opinion, he humiliated his last two opponents, even though Silva is too classy to admit it.
Are you telling me this guy couldn't kick to the mid section and inflict total destruction if he wanted to?
http://mma-live.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/and ... - KnightMareInc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Sylvia and Arlovski were both top 10 if not top 5 HWs when fedor beat them. Arlovski had atleast 3 KO wins in a row before he fought Fedor.
- stopple, on 07/20/2009, -2/+5Torres should be higher.. dude used to fight guys 50 lbs above his weight
http://www.ermac.org/i/-mma/ChaseBeebe_MiguelTorre ... - inactive, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Mike Brown and Jon Fitch are nobodies. Why are they even mentioned? Kazushi Sakuraba and Ikuhisa Minowa are way better fighters imo.
- TylerDurden0, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4Hmm, no Lesnar, huh? Imagine that...
Rampage Jackson? Please. And where's the guy that whipped his ass on this list? - KnightMareInc, on 07/20/2009, -6/+9fedor isnt #1 therefor this list is invalid.
- tbb73, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3"...and it forced them to stand up and fight it out"
I think they should give them ball and ask them to shoot it in a basket, that would be nice too!!!
Moron - chadsterrr, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3I remember seeing Silva succumb to a flying scissor leglock heel hook. Yeah.
http://www.fightgifs.com/sites/default/files/ander ... - covertbadger, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Yes. His last two fights were terrible. Silva's a wrecking machine when people attack him, but is almost entirely stumped by fighters who won't engage. Compare and contrast with, say, Machida's recent demolition of Rashad, which was a masterclass in drawing out a reluctant fighter and then putting them away.
Silva has to learn to deal with the fact that his opponents are scared of him now, and will be cautious. - SpazAttack5000, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Yeah I think Arlovski just got surprised by Rogers and Sylvia though is done like dinner, will never be a contender again.
- anderzole, on 07/20/2009, -6/+8GSP's the man, but his fights have been boring as of late.
Also, who has BJ beat lately to deserve a top 10 spot? Sean Sherk? Gimme a break. - b0neman, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2BJ used to be good... But he's not in the top 10 any more. Where's Uriah Faber? He's got a better record than BJ and is definitely more exciting. Even Carlos Condit would be a better choice than some of these guys if you're going to throw WEC fighters into the list. Gina should be up there too... If there's a tougher MMA'r in the womens' ranks tell me who she is.
- cloneenolc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I meant Hunt with the Americana not Coleman. The Coleman fight Fedor almost submitted him with a choke right after Colman attempted the same thing on him.
- vestlandsfanden, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4oh yeah, cause Fedor Emelianenko isn“t the greatest ever!
- SpazAttack5000, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2He is not a very good journalist but their rankings are based off the input of journalists from all over the place. Not just some guy who picks 10 names and calls it a top 10 list.
