- techguru2006, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7I agree... why do nothing with white space.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2008, -0/+6He would have been able to finish the title, but there wasn't enough room in the existing spectrum.
- jodimcmullen, on 10/20/2008, -0/+6Yes, this would be so awesome.
- Myonosken, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4Putting it in the wrong section to avoid needing lots of Diggs? Buried, stop gaming the system.

- Valyn, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2Since the article explained almost nothing, anyone able to explain what this really means?
- JustinHopewell, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2I was foolishly hoping that we'd be able to setup local area television broadcasts from our homes. I want my own tv show damn it!
- real, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1bring on the ipod touch with white space, wow that sound just horrible. but very cool.
- Elderon, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1This seems pretty interesting, but it is a little light on real world applications. Would this let us finally get real high-speed broadband for mobile devices? And by that I mean high speed like we have on our home computers with similiar plans, not this $60 / month for like 1-5 gb max crap that cellphone carriers screw us with.
What other interesting things? Being that it's currently used for audio / video transfer it seems to reason that it's good for high speed transmissions - dwstu, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2This has ramifications that are NOT being clearly explained.Google and Microsoft are trying to crowd out the use of pre-existing wireless devices. Devices that at first glance you may not think are important however will effect the quality of everyone's lives. Wireless microphones and in ear monitoring for performing and sporting events as well as Broadway and churches are just a few things that already occupy this crowded space. This gadgetry that Google an Microsoft are offering could clearly operate in other ranges but the CEO of Google happens to sit on the "un-biased" board that is voting on these issues. By the way, check out how much money is changing hands in the "vote" for white space. No-one really knows where it goes after that....
- TripinVA, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1There are no white spaces on cable.
If you read the report, you'll find it's full of a bunch of failures which are being completely ignored. The wireless mic detection failed miserably, and it interfered with cable (!) until all the cabling in the test facility was replaced with laboratory grade cabling. WSDs are a terrible idea. - coldfusioneer, on 11/07/2008, -0/+0http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Voyant-Int ...
These guys are already manufacturing commercial-grade white space radio device not just for broadband, but also innovative uses such as long-range radio control of devices and data transmissions.
Think smart traffic signals that's solar-powered with LED signal lights, with software-defined signal processing, video streaming of traffic conditions, image/on-ground traffic sensors, automated with central control and central data processing. ALL WIRELESS and GREEN! - dwstu, on 10/23/2008, -0/+0Digital Television is the reason that all of this got started.... Analog TV leaves big gaps in the frequencies that they are allowed to use. For years now, wireless audio has resided in these spaces with pretty good success. However, DTV uses a much wider slice of bandwidth and in larger markets can leave very little space for anything to operate. If anyone wants to read up on how this effects things several wireless microphone manufacturers have released numerous white papers and study's on the subject. http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/PressRoom/WhiteSpace ... .This article explains quite a bit of the unforeseen ramifications that are being kept from the general public. Music, Sports, Religion. Theater, Opera, Motorsports, Extreme Games, Concerts, Political rallies.... A huge part of the public will be impacted in some way if this is allowed to go through... Do you really think you are getting "free" anything out of this.... there is always a price. How do you think the large companies that have already bought BILLIONS of dollars in newly released white space are going to recoup that money? Do you really think Google and Microsoft want to be benevolent and give you free internet because you're awesome? NO. They are making money off of this and don't be fooled by it. There are technologies that will allow them to operate in other frequency ranges.... This one just happens to be for sale and the price is right.
