Wearing all that gear might make you look like a dork but at the end of the day you'll have all your teeth and won't need a wheelchair.

I do not see an easy way, how the guy himself could judge the quality of his bike.
Even if the bike had successfully survived such stunts before, they could have lead to microscopic damages making the whole thing weaker and weaker until it broke.
But why he did not have a helmet is a good question indeed.
Unlike what one intuitively thinks, having forward speed does not make a 5 meter fall any less hard.
