- RipThe5y5tem, on 04/09/2008, -5/+14What happens when they need to take an extreme crap?
- cmiller1, on 04/09/2008, -2/+8dugg for Pheidippides reference, although technically he was running to tell his countrymen of their military victory at the battle of Marathon
- cj485, on 04/09/2008, -3/+9ski faster of course.
- DaviDTC, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6For just endurance - the Furnace Creek 508 mile bike ride in death valley. 48 hours to finish. 35,000 feet of climb. No drafting allowed if you arent doing a group ride. If that isnt hard enough you can do the fixed gear race which means no shifting allowed during the entire 508 miles, including the hills... oh ya, must be a steel framed bike.
- evanmyers, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6hardcore.
- Enfenestrate, on 04/09/2008, -2/+7I wonder how the first utramarathons came about?
"Hey guys, these here marathons really aren't all that tough any more. How about we just do
like 4-5 more after this one, without stopping? That'll probably get us a little winded."
"That's a fantastic idea, I can't believe I never thought of that!" - eyepatch100, on 04/09/2008, -4/+8First, extreme relief, then extreme shame and embarrassment, followed by extreme discomfort.
- robotplague, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6I wish I wasn't so lazy =(
- iruber1337, on 04/09/2008, -3/+7...and Brett Farve has what to do with this?
Funniest part is they screwed up typing "http" for the link. - caLt, on 04/09/2008, -7/+10I wonder how many of them are Digg users...
- evanmyers, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3WE COULD NOT ****ING REGISTER YOUR ****ING DIGG.
PLEASE ****ING REFRESH AND TRY AGAIN. - Accolade1, on 04/09/2008, -3/+5Now that's an impressive win.
- cmiller1, on 04/09/2008, -3/+5Well, I used to be a lazy nerd, but I have been training myself for over a year and plan to enter a sprint triathlon sometime in the coming year. It's not hip for us nerds to be unfit anymore.
- MrViklund, on 04/09/2008, -2/+4Eeehh. I can do that in an 1 hour.
- kss42, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1The runners in that race have to stay right on the line in the middle of the road, because the black asphalt gets hot enough to melt their shoes. And unlike the Marathon of the Sands, there's no six-stage nonsense here - it's 135 miles, nonstop, through a desert and up a mountain. For my money, it's the toughest on this list by far. And then there are the people who reach the finish at Mount Whitney - and turn around, going all the way back to Badwater. Then there's Marshall Ulrich, who did that twice. Ultrarunners are a pretty intense crowd.
P.S. Yes, it's in California. California FTW. - synyster, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1i second that, but i think it will be more fun if someone in the back get pushed and end up human pile up.(if the front people fall, there is a chance people can avoid it).
- radarbeam, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1BIG ...BRASS ...ONES....
- CapCzar, on 04/09/2008, -3/+4The guy with the ski polls and tight pants is my uncle.
- t0ggle, on 04/09/2008, -3/+4Badwater is in Death Valley California, not Nevada.
- Bruack, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1i personally like the picture of that competitor from the north pole marathon...
- synyster, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1can you just do a super jump and take the first place :)
- synwolf, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Is the 6th slide a dead man?!!?!
- zantos420, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1i'd like to see someone in the front fall and cause a 2000 human-skiing pile up
- Micherik, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1uhm, I was going to say why the ***** is Engadin mentioned, but uhm Vasaloppet is almost equally weak.... both races are totally flat and in the middle of the winter with good conditions every year...
Even the Norwegian Birkebeiner is harder, you've at least got some hills! Real men compete in Norseman, Trollski, Birkebeineren or well, just join be for a run ;) - Av3nger, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Wait, where's the guy who's stacked...
- teaguecl, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I'm not fast enough to qualify for Kona, but I will be doing the same distance at Ironman Arizona in November. I'm surprised there aren't more Digg triathletes, it's a really fun sport, and you don't have to do the crazy distance races to have fun.
- umdigger, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1The Triple Bypass in Colorado is pretty intense. 120 mile bike ride over 3 mountain passes. Something like 10,000 ft vertical change.
- Uberperson, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1thats nothing the jews did this without....oh wait
- Phi01, on 04/09/2008, -4/+4i'm doing the ironman in france :D
- dolface, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0Primal Quest: http://www.ecoprimalquest.com
5 - 10 days, 100,000 feet of elevation gain, and you have to find your way with a map and compass.
Oh yeah, the clock never stops, so you sleep as little as possible. - nikstr, on 04/09/2008, -3/+3The desert one where you carry all your food seems to be the worst. Also the one starting below sea-level climbing to an extreme height. Suicide right there.
- cmiller1, on 04/09/2008, -3/+3This is actually one of the reasons many participants in long distances races have switched to partial to full liquid diets during the race. The biggest benefits are that it is lighter weight and easier to digest, but a little pleasant side effect is no need to expell solid waste.
- mydave, on 08/13/2008, -0/+0Great. I love extreme and extremals.

- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0i did a few triathlons last year all of which are sprints. im aiming at an olympic distance this summer. but i doubt i'll ever see the day when i can finish an ironman. my triathlon goal is actually the half at lake placid, it'll be something i can brag about for the rest of my life.
all i gotta say is...triathlon is one expensive sport. - Rambeezle, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0Those conformist exercisers, gosh
- cmiller1, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1Ron Paul actually was a track star in his younger years and rides his bicycle every day. He could probably beat YOUR sorry ass at a triathlon any day of the week.
- z3r0c0O1, on 04/09/2008, -8/+7Try having to run to warn your army of an oncoming attack. It'll kill you.

Real men compete in Vasaloppet, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasaloppet
Approx 50 miles on ski with over 15 000 skiers competing. - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -5/+2Image mirror: http://uploadingit.com/view/527395_gu33f http://uploadingit.com/view/527394_mbnlu
- LogitechG15, on 04/09/2008, -4/+1I know he could!
- LogitechG15, on 04/09/2008, -9/+3Ron Paul competed in every single one of those events. Write in Ron Paul 08!!
