- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used to live on Maui, and to see JAWS in action was incredible. Helicopters everywhere filming the guys. If the surfers fall, the jet skiers have to race to save them before the next set come in. Talk about adrenaline.
- tlmac59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All I know if that the people going after these waves are seriously insane. Its amazing more of them don't wind up dead.
- tungsai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have never surfed. These guys make it look so easy.
How exactly would a big wave kill you? By crushing you to death? I honestly don't know. or keep you underwater so long that you drown? I figured that if you fell, you'd get pushed around like a bobber for a while, but eventually the wave would dissipate and you would just come to the surface. - soupyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn, I guess the waves at Pipeline can only get so big. Good luck to these guys, its quite a rush, even on the tinier waves.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...there was a big wave rider from Hawaii named Mark Foo that died about 10 years ago in huge surf at Mavericks. That's the only one I know of. You're right...it seems like there should be more deaths. Those are some serious waves...and these guys can be technically perfect every time but one little unusual glitch from the ocean just once for a split second - and it's all over.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tlmac59 - you and I must have surfing on the brain today :)
Just noticed we both submitted different big wave articles a few mins apart. Actually the scotsman.com article inspired me earlier to search for the one i just posted (which is a few weeks old). Hope they complement each other. digg+ for surf! - n8agrin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2tomboy501, you're right, Mark Foo died at Mavericks but it should be noted he was paddle surfing, not towing in when it happened. It is pretty amazing that more people haven't died. Just watching footage of Teahupoo gets my heart beating quick (here is the classic image of Laird riding what many believe was a life-or-death wave http://www.mtm.ufsc.br/~krukoski/imagens/surf/LB_Teahupoo.jpg). Another interesting side note is that the guy who originally surfed Mavericks did so by himself for something like 5 or 6 years before anyone else paddled out with him. That's in cold water, an area with some mighty big fish, and waves that are generally at least over 20ft. high. That is commitment... surfers are crazy.
- kazaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live right by Waimea, location of the world famous Eddie Aikau Big wave invitational. It's an amazing site to see, back in highschool we would all skip school and go down and watch.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, I knew that surfing these huge ones was pretty insane, but I guess I never thought about the fact that when you wipe out, you could be pushed more than a football field's length down underwater. That defines INSANE. I can't imagine going deeper than most casual scuba divers go, just on a surfing wipeout. And having to equalize my ears twice...wow....
- sensibledriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the mere fact that Laird is represented.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well a meter high wave hurts when you go under and get dragged along the shore (just try standing in front of one).. the pressures under these waves are huge, they can pop your ears, burst blood vessels etc.. plus a lot of these break offshore over corals that cut you to pieces. And don't expect to just bob to the surface if you do go under the down currents will be huge.. plus another wave will be just behind.
...but still looks fun! - Avotyy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://shakk.us/Misc/inkjet-cartridge-epson-inkjet-cartridge-hp-inkjet-cartridge
