news.bbc.co.uk —Shane Dorian has taken the XXL $50,000 prize after riding the heaviest wave in the annual Global Big Wave awards. Mike Parsons broke the world record for the biggest wave 70-foot, his prize: $15,000.
I always like to read about such things. And to watch vids also. But in Russia, where i live, unfortunately we do not have warm ocean waves. So we have nothing to do but watch such contests on TV and feel envious)))))
OK all you squids out there, listen up. Tow-in surfing sucks.
Did any of you happen to notice that in none of the footage you see a surfer actually paddle into the wave and catch it?
That's right, you didn't. That's because all those guys are tow-in surfing which is the equivalent of taking a helicopter to the top of Everest and high-fiving your self.
I'll explain in greater detail:
in surfing, it’s almost as much about how you got there as how you ride. ask any experienced water man or woman and they’ll tell you that once you’re up and riding you have it made. there are conditions where just paddling out can kill you or at least make it impossible to get to the line up, the place where the waves are caught. paddling for a wave and dropping down the face is a skill that’s as important as the ride. have you ever heard the expression, “he was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple”?
now introduce the sound and sight of PWC in the line up and you have basically killed whatever beauty exists in the sights and smells and sounds of the ocean. if there are some waves that can’t be caught without the use of PWC doesn’t that tell you something? like maybe it’s natures way of telling you you don’t belong here OR that the human who can catch them hasn’t been born yet.
i guess if you understood, you would understand.
mike parsons 66ft big wave ftw. most righteous ride ive ever seen. when you drop in on 15 foot breaks its intimidating as hell, i cant even imagine surfing those....
anouncer said he came dangerously close to a wipe out?
Im pretty sure I saw him head over heals at the end of that shot, as in he wiped out
personally I think its cooler seeing him catch the huge wave along with the added bonus of seeing him wipe in the end
That's Teahupoo. The waves there are a thing of beauty because of how thick they are, hence "heaviest."
I believe this happens due to the water rushing back from the previous wave breaking. Teahupoo is a one-of-a-kind place. http://webpages.csus.edu/~mf88/index_files/teahupo ...
the reporter said he came 'dangerously close to a wipeout'....but i'm pretty sure i saw his legs cartwheeling thru the air towards the end. is that not a wipeout?
