- dstruktNine, on 01/01/2009, -0/+23Self-preservation is a natural instinct we all have. I, too, would've had a very hard time walking away, but when imminent danger is around, one must do what one must do.
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -1/+21Mother Nature can be a real bitch. RIP.
- allocate, on 01/01/2009, -1/+15You gotta do what you gotta do.
- ichunxo, on 01/01/2009, -1/+12Wow, that is the worst article I have ever read. Not only is this Touching the Void book/documentary referenced twice, but the last 5 sentences are a plot summary. Unbelievable. Actually, believable, it's the Daily Mail.
- MattyC69, on 01/01/2009, -0/+9It is an incredibly sad story, especially because he went back and actually saw their bodies. It's a pretty tough desicion to make: Save yourself, or stay and die. There really isn't a right answer. What we do know is, that if he had stayed behind to try and dig out the rest of them, they all would've died.
- alexforcefive, on 01/02/2009, -1/+7christ, they're linked by the word "decision". It's automatic. It's not part of some conspiracy to offend you
- mikunter, on 01/01/2009, -0/+6East of Vancouver? Like the entire width of England and then some east perhaps...
- 3Den, on 01/02/2009, -0/+5"East of Vancouver" is a bit misleading. This was in the East Kootenays, in the Rockies, about, I dunno, a 7 hour drive from Vancouver. It's much closer to Calgary than Vancouver.
- The_Wallbanger, on 01/02/2009, -0/+5You gotta wear your beacons and know how to use them. You gotta brush up on current weather patterns and snow conditions before heading out. These unfortunate sledheads sound completely unprepared.
- MattyC69, on 01/02/2009, -0/+4Except that after getting hit by one, they were immediatly hit by another one... in the same place. And while they were walking away, ANOTHER one happened in the same area.
Did you read the article? - graemee, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3Normal for the British sensational press like the Daily Mail. Go to the Canadian links to get a better interview.
- frelk, on 01/01/2009, -2/+5Getting stuck under an avalanche has got to suck
- lohphat, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3Why does half the article read like a promotion of the documentary instead of the real tragedy?
- Davin900, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3I don't think that being alert and vigilant against racism is necessarily a bad thing. I'm also not entirely sure how you or anyone else outside Israel would have any idea what is made up and what is truth. I gave up on finding an unbiased source of news about the Israel-Palestine conflict a long time ago. Anyway, I don't see how a perceived bias at the Guardian changes the fact that I can't honestly think of a single Daily Mail article (on Digg at least) that represented actual journalism. Certainly nothing investigative. Its a constant flow of survival stories, culture warfare, or some irrevelant but eye catching picture of the day. Theres a time and a place for all these things, but they shouldn't be mislabeled as a source for news. That would imply journalism took place within its pages.
- graemee, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3Distance in Canada is relative. We have a habit of compressing time and space and make the country smaller on the inside than the outside. Sort of like a reverse TARDIS.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Another ***** Daily Mail article submitted by --- guess who.
- JulyZerg, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2I can personally attest that the last two weeks of local news here has played at least an hour of news about avalanches each day. These people have no excuse. As sorry as I feel for the community, I'm having trouble mustering up any pity for them. They chose to go out when they knew all the risks.
- midbc, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2best site for the interview http://www.theprovince.com/story.html?id=1130923
- M4tchstickM4n, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2I hate the Daily Mail too, but you have completely got the wrong end of stick. It is not a promotion of a documentary. Most newspapers/news channels feed off tragedy, they make money from news and bad news makes more money.
- fez08, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2the video of one of the survivors telling his story is pretty powerful

whoops, i guess midbc beat me to it - alex7575, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touching_the_Void
- galanz, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Bah, 900 Kilometers is practically next door in Canada.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Utter and complete nonsense. Investigate the ownership of both papers if you want to get a true image of their independence and freedom from proprietorial interference. The Mail is a rag. The Guardian is a newspaper. Big difference.
- osama1234, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Might be because its in BC, not Alberta that they choose Vancouver instead of Calgary as a point of reference.
- Davin900, on 01/02/2009, -1/+3I'm sorry but I have never seen a Daily Mail article that actually semed like news. It seems to have as much journalistic depth as a Reader's Digest or Jerry Springer. Do conservative newspapers want to distract readers rather than inform them? Also, same goes for the Telegraph it would seem. Can't we just get back to the good old days of blaming everything on immigrants?
- chaiwalla, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1900 kms is the same distance no matter where you are. Sparwood is actually much closer to Lethbridge and even to Calgary than to Vancouver. It is a 12 hour drive to Sparwood from Vancouver. That is not near.
- M4tchstickM4n, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1If you havn`t watched "Touching The Void" you should. It`s an amazing story told by the actual people who were involved. It`s 2 hours long, but I was on the edge of my seat for the whole time.
- Hu99, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1I live in Vancouver and I'm sick of the deification of these young men. They were a group of friends out playing in the snow with their toys, but chose to ignore avalanche warnings. Sure, it's tragic that 8 men dies, but a little perspective is in order.
- 3Den, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1Right.. but that's bout as meaningful as saying "West of Montreal"
- solid12345, on 01/02/2009, -2/+2For all the people bitching about the Daily Mail, the liberal equivalent the Guardian is not much better. Here you will find sensational witchunt articles accusing everything of racism, from Lord of the Rings to 300 and British Theater to making up stories about Israel massacres that never occured. But for some reason it is "respected"?
- M4tchstickM4n, on 01/02/2009, -1/+1It wasn`t promoting a documentary. It just mentioned the similarities between the two stories. If you get the chance you should watch "Touching The Void" it`s an amazing story.
- cast55, on 01/02/2009, -0/+0Not quite. The safest place to be in an avalanche prone area is where one just happened.
- cast55, on 01/02/2009, -0/+0Snowmobilers are among the worst when it comes to avalanche inducing behaviour. One common snowmobile activity is "high marking", whereby each operator in a group will take a run up a steep slope to see who can leave the highest set of tracks before gravity takes over - high probability of triggering a slide in an at-risk area.
Beacon, probe and shovel are only useful if you are both trained and PRACTICED in their use.

- thaprinze, on 01/02/2009, -2/+1Hey, don't feel bad. I'm sure your 8 friends didn't want to leave you behind when they left either.
*****, I'm goin to hell... - Alias1431, on 01/02/2009, -2/+1Would you have cut the rope?
- 3Den, on 01/02/2009, -3/+2Buried - it's a promotional article shamelessly, and inaccurately abusing a tragedy.
- thetedster180, on 01/02/2009, -2/+1don't talk ***** about kevin
- TimmyOToole, on 01/02/2009, -4/+3Damn nature, you scary!
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -4/+2Holy crap, that sucks serious ass!
- RealityRebel, on 01/02/2009, -3/+1It looks like it just got here, it's probably still in beta testing or something... I wouldn't know, though. Try to think positive.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -4/+0***** the RIAA
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -14/+9Anyone else ***** sick and tired of the 'related keyword' portal spam that digg so smartly jammed up in our faces? Kevin tries too hard to not care about the users. Some ***** how - 'Apple's Worst Business Decisions' is related by keyword to this tragedy - a story thats 2 years old. This accident happened around 3 hours away from where I live and I could give a flying ***** about Apple right now. Suck a ***** *****-egg digg 'engineers'.
- alexforcefive, on 01/01/2009, -14/+6Please stop digging daily mail articles. It's an extreme-rightwing tabloid. Don't give them the pageviews.
