Sustainable Towers in Malaysia Resemble a Fleet of Ships
inhabitat.com — "It comes as no surprise to us that a stunning new residential development is planned for the Putrajaya waterfront known as Precinct 4, just 30km south of Kuala Lumpur. The design, however, is a refreshing and original with unique, marine-inspired structures."

- tmbrwolf19, on 03/27/2008, -0/+12Really starting to think we are entering a architectural boom era. After the terrible design of the 70s and 80s, and the rather bland work done in the 90s, we are finally getting some interesting stuff out there. Not to say nothing good ever came out of the eras, but there was an unfortunately large amount of bad. I can only hope that this project will go through.
- roamzero, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15It seems this boom is ignoring America. I wonder why that is? Everytime I see an amazing architectural post on digg it's always some other country, with the one exception of the freedom tower awhile back.
- tmbrwolf19, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3There are a few other decent American projects out there. Last I heard there was a couple large ones planned for Chicago.
I think to some degree it comes down to public sentiment in North America. Instead of supporting large architectural projects and seeing them as something good bring prestige and recognition to the community, we sit and complain about cost, size, looks, etc and they project falls through. It happens enough and people give up on getting things built. It seems as if the big name architects have ended looking to other countries to get their work built. Most of these other countries, the public opinion holds less sway and if you have enough money, you can get anything built, no matter how absurd. Maybe this will inspire a resurgence in projects here in North America, but who knows. - Blackie23, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3American's are short sited and are not willing to pay for sustainable living. But they will pay for it later and wonder "why? why? didn't we listen." Silly wally-world society. While those with the cash will be moving into these towers and those like them around the world.
- blate, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2That's because no architect wants his work to be given a ***** name like FREEDOM TOWER or JUSTICE STADIUM

- analogs, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2Definitely. I live in Chicago and some of Mies van der Rohe's greatest works, without the help of fantastic photography... well, it looks like a box. A totally uninteresting, drab, simple box. I can't wait till some crazy ass Calatrava ***** goes up in here and makes Bruce Graham drop his dentures.

- WallaceFreeman, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1a fleet of sailboats, very cool
- pbgswd, on 03/27/2008, -6/+12I was in PJ in January. buildings in Putrajaya are already disintegrating - cracks in foundations in buildings and bridges, and walls. The Muslim Malay ruling powers have stacked the deck in their favor, and this has allowed for building contracts to be awarded to Muslim Malays only - 'Bumi Putras' as they are known. These contracts are given out to Bumi Putras whether they are competent or not, and where there are disintegrating buildings, we can say they were not competent builders. The ruling powers are busy spending everybody's money on these monumental projects. Behind these beautiful buildings is a corrupt institution, that oppresses dissent with secret police, and practices social and economic apartheid on non Malay-Muslim groups, such as Indians, Chinese, and others. The ruling powers are busy rewriting Malaysian history and planning for a future as an islamic republic.
- karmaghost, on 03/27/2008, -3/+0I like puppies.
- imabot, on 03/27/2008, -4/+3...as a non-bumi, your totally ***** right.

- takatoo, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2racist
- pbgswd, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2It is the ruling aristocracy and the Bumi Putras that are racist. They are the ones who benefit.
- tweetsa, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1a fleet of retarded ships maybe
- LoudMusic, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1"The architect’s goal was to design buildings that tell “of its place of origin which is culturally modern, Islamic and tropical in nature.”"
Why am I having trouble putting "Islamic" and "tropical" together?- MeinBereich, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1OH you wouldn't have that trouble after coming over to South East Asia.
We equate Islam with brown-skinned Malays, not white-skinned Arabs. - CrushThemTorg, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Perhaps because you didn't know that Indonesia is the most populous Muslim nation on earth? And, if I remember correctly, Malaysia doesn't do too bad itself.
- MeinBereich, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1OH you wouldn't have that trouble after coming over to South East Asia.
- EquesArdor, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Are the Giants coming to try and steal the Auryn yet?
- jasonllester, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Beautiful design. I love the light streaming in through the sides of the building in the conceptual pic at the end.
- schultzeworks, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2All comments regarding "beautiful light shining through" please remember that these are 3D renderings and the entire effect will be totally lost the second anyone moves in with furniture or drapes. Otherwise, hell yeah, they do look very cool, but you'll never see the effect.
- cubbiesx, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2"Where do you live?"
"Over by the lake, it looks like a bunch of giant portable heaters. You can't miss it." - seafoamgreen21, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0seriously looks like a nod to renzo piano.
- xeos, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2@pbgswd - Good comment and observation. One thing to be corrected is that the opression is towards everyone - inc. the Bumis. It protects the aristocrats.
- pbgswd, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1no matter how these buildings will be made, they will never be sustainable.
- takatoo, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2digg for being malaysian
- cosmogal, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0The structure is nice.I should now take my hat off the village/kampong like Malaysia
- syyang85, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0cool.
wait till u see Penang! - toshirosan, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3It's funny when someone points out that the country featured in the article as a country that practices social and economic apartheid on non Malay-Muslim groups since the so-called Non MALAY-Muslim group is the one holding the country's economy and are at the top of the social status of the said country. They are way richer than the average Malay-muslim in that country (just look at the list of rich people there - most of them are chinese and Indian). Being a non-Malaysian myself, and work in the construction business (I was stationed by my base company in my homeland to that country for 6 years), I've seen it happening at my construction site in Putrajaya. sure, the Malay-muslim companies gets the contract, but since they mostly don't have the source of materials and manpower, (which are TIGHTLY controlled by the chinese and indian supplier and contractor companies), and they also can't get the good materials at a competitive price, they had to sub the contract to the chinese and indian companies while they stay on as project management. Seeing the opportunity, the NON-malay companies skimp on quality materials and take short-cuts to get the most profit and as a result, you can see shoddy jobs everywhere (thats where you get complaints like "buildings in Putrajaya are already disintegrating"). Those malay companies are left holding the bag and had to take the responsibilities. That's the truth that is happening there that not a lot of people see. They only see that the malay companies get the contract and blame the system and the race without seeing the whole picture. Opportunists and small minded people are so alike everywhere.
- pbgswd, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1This is a case of blaming the victim. The state has been busy breaking up companies run by chinese and indians, forcing a minimum of 33 percent ownership by a bumi putra. This policy has also helped run down the Malaysian economy at an alarming rate, due to companies run by incompetent bumi putra partners. This society will remain corrupt to the core and manifest its corruption everywhere until the the state of Malaysia is subject to open and equal standards for all its citizens,
- vendo, on 08/26/2008, -0/+0Putraya is cool, at least from the photos, like Precint 4 and others: http://www.fotegrafik.com/gallery/Putrajaya.
Does anyone know if when Precinct 4 will be developed? Is it on plan?
