- fober, on 10/11/2007, -6/+45Fireworks, lightning and a shooting star (comet?).
Totally real. - xxTazxx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42You need a bigger monitor mate.
- bonyicecream, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Yes it is real, just read the comment thread here... http://digg.com/space/Amazing_Panorama_of_a_Comet_Between_Fireworks_and_Lightning
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22That's Comet McNaught, it was seen August of last year.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22I would pay to be there.

The original photo can be found on NASA's site:

Somehow I don't think NASA's in the habit of putting up fakes. - trioxylon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14The image looks kind of surreal.
- Phyrefly, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11God? Oh, you mean the guy with the expensive fisheye lens...
- Crazd, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@PRION5
It may just be a long exposure time. Check out how bright it is for a night shot. The exposure was probably long enough for those people to move around, thus becoming transparent. - notorious., on 10/11/2007, -7/+15and by "dupe" i mean it was front paged 96 days ago.
- jollyjeffery, on 10/11/2007, -11/+17Buried as REALLY OLD
- AJRiddle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah I submitted this a while ago, but this submission is missing the best part, a comet in the middle!
http://digg.com/space/Amazing_Panorama_of_a_Comet_Between_Fireworks_and_Lightning - BenKenobi88, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Maybe because lightning happens so fast...and the people are kinda there to watch the fireworks.
- paddydub, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3from NASA: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070205.html
Explanation: Sometimes the sky itself is the best show in town. On January 26, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image center, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught. The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught continues to move out from the Sun and dim, but should remain visible in southern skies with binoculars through the end of this month. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework. - mlvassallo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@nsmike
They faked the moon landing didn't they?
:p - notorious., on 10/11/2007, -11/+12dupe.

- Viagran, on 07/24/2009, -0/+0The image looks?
- drbogo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1old
- edg3, on 10/11/2007, -10/+10Sure does look amazing, there also appears to be a comet of some description in the middle... it really is a wonderful shot!
- premalzaveri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0wat a day. f**kin awesome..
- PixelVision, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I stumbledupon this pic this morning. it's cool. I was once at a beach in SC and lightnight was forking from far out over the ocean and spreading across the sky inland. was an amazing experience.
- EvilzoraK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Also... this has been dugg before months ago... I didn't do my homework for an exact date but I know that I got it off Digg quite awhile ago
- aule, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Who are the geniuses going for a swim during a lightning storm...
- Aminmadani, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2How about three different pictures at the same exact location merged together using Photoshop.
- Aethra, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Dugg for being an awesome picture, even though it is digitally stitched together. Here is where I first saw it. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070205.html
From the caption.
"The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed..." - demonotaku, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6For people saying it's stitched together, no kidding. It's a panorama. You take multiple images, each one overlapping the previous one, and then "stitch" them together. Unless you have some crazy lens, that's the way to do it.
- masgrada, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Clearly stitched. You can see in multiple places on the beach scene where they didn't even bother to commit to one picture or the other, just a blend.
Both these were happening on the same night, just not the exact same moment. The two are not the same picture. - physphd, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3"Somehow I don't think NASA's in the habit of putting up fakes."
Agreed that this is not fake, but NASA has been busted a number of times. A huge picture of Armstrong and Aldrin on the moon hung in the main lobby in Huntsville for years - until somebody noticed that it didn't appear on the index of any of the film rolls shot on the moon, and further that Apollo 11's manifest didn't include a tripod, so who would have taken it? It was admitted that it was an "artistic composition" and removed.
Also, I was at Johns Hopkins at the Hubble control center (STScI) a few years back and saw first-hand people photoshopping images for inclusion in the 15th anniversay collection to the public. They were very open about trying to make images more dramatic and vibrant. - twodayslate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Photoshop?
- djbon2112, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Anyone know of a higher res version of this? It would make a kickass double- or tripple-monitor background!
- TheGr8Unwashed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Dug myself down for :
a) dodgy typing
b) apparently it is dangerous to swim in lighning storms, though I really don't see why...
b1) you're at sea-level, so you are at the lowest point possible, the people stood on the beach seem more exposed
b2) I thought that p.d. was the problem, where's the p.d. come from?
c) *ShutsTFU* - adventflux, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0One word. Beautiful.
- milkmage, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3@prions
doubt it. it's a timed exposure (which is why it looks much brighter than it would @ night).. the "transparent" people probably moved while the shutter was open creating a 'ghost' effect. There's no way that many lightening strikes happen in the split second a shutter is normally open. - Rage67, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Funny how we don't appreciate nature anymore...
they are more amazed at the fireworks than
the huge lightning going down... - smarba, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0they're comin' right at us!
- quotato, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I get fished in every time a fish eye lens is used to stretch a panorama. This picture would be interesting if it was either "fake" or "real". That comet could easily have been pasted in.
Moreover, it seems like the crowd is not watching fireworks, comet, or lightning. This could be a beer drinking party on the beach and everyone is just too mellow to notice a thing. - shaitanx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2If you look in the url, it's under the hi-res directory
- paulbjensen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3This is why we need a pictures section on Digg
- djbon2112, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Yes, but the image itself is NOT high res. I'm talking 3840x1024 or something like that. i.e. triple monitor size.
- Geek180, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1THIS IS SOOO OLD!!!
- liamfly, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1ALREADY FUGGIN POSTED
- TheGr8Unwashed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0@ aule
WHAT exactly would be the problem swimming during a lightening storm? - Splitt3rxx, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Wow, that must be a drawing, it doesn't look real, but is amazing.
- PRION5, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7The picture is stitched together. Just look at the transparent people near the middle towards the left.
- Alex76, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6Awesome pic. Looks like SFX, though I know it isn't...
- EEPS, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7hmmm..... the picture width is apparently 1337 pixels... interesting
- insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0fake . . look to the people. . everybody is looking to the fireworks. .. nobody is looking to the lightning.
- pldgnoauthority, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4And here we stand at a crossroad of the beauty of man and god.
