- Frostek, on 10/29/2009, -0/+29Damn. So this was why my air-air battery concept failed. :-(
It was Zinc all the time! - ide3308, on 10/29/2009, -0/+25i'm pretty sure that when you say its 100% more, it's double the original amount. i guess i could be wrong.
- smemily, on 10/31/2009, -1/+18I had that argument with a 10th grade math teacher, because to me "200% of" and "200% more" are totally different terms, the first meaning 2x the original figure and the 2nd meaning the original figure plus 2x itself. He won the argument though because he had authority and I did not.
- katagana, on 10/29/2009, -3/+19Amazing potential... Electric cars are the future!
- TJ11240, on 10/30/2009, -0/+15Everything is poisonous at certain levels
- ide3308, on 10/29/2009, -3/+18um... isn't 300% 4 times?
- draculthemad, on 10/31/2009, -0/+14Yes. Its a mismatch between the article text and the title.
ReVolt Technology.. claims that its Zinc-air battery can "store three times the energy of lithium ion batteries, by volume, while costing only half as much"
vs.
"300% More Power Than Lithium-Ion"
The latter does not match the article text. - dsmx, on 10/31/2009, -1/+15It's also why my prayer based battery failed. You mean I actually have to do something for something to happen?
- rockrapdude, on 10/31/2009, -1/+13I'll believe it when I see it.
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/29/2009, -1/+12It could certainly spark life into that industry.
- swordedge, on 10/31/2009, -0/+9Next time you are in the drug store, go look at the hearing aid batteries. All of them are Zinc-Air. For me, they last about 2 to 3 weeks for one running my hearing aids. They do not recharge. One of the components is air so they are shipped sealed. Once you take the seal off, you may as well use it as they lose their charge, even when you are not using them.
- forcedfx, on 10/31/2009, -2/+10Why does everything have to turn political? ***** *****.
- merbrian, on 10/29/2009, -1/+8Ah Zinc. Now much more than my favorite vitamin.
- nachochease, on 10/31/2009, -2/+9I'll have this battery in my laptop as I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever.
- TVarmy, on 10/31/2009, -0/+7It's a battery, the claims will be all over the place, but actually deliver much less. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some games to play on my DS, which gets up to 12 hours* of battery life per charge.
- shutaro, on 10/29/2009, -1/+6Zinc! Zinc! Come back Zinc!
- zanzibuz, on 10/31/2009, -0/+5My hearing aid batteries are zinc-air. Similar batteries are already in use.
- sanman, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4Remember - 300% more energy means 300% more trips to the mall!
But seriously, one of the biggest benefits of electric cars to me, would be in not having to pay nearly as much on auto repair bills, since solid state electrical components should last longer and break down less.
Imagine buying a car and driving it for 10 years without having to repair it! Talk about an economic stimulus! - MazeBot, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4no, means they make small battery, same amount of total energy. oh and probly charge 2x the price
- forcedfx, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4As long as you only run one app at a time..... oh... sorry.
- MAGZine, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3Do you have any man thongs?
- copypastry, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3Think again Jimmy. You see the firing pin in your gun was made out of…yep…zinc.
- TonyCubed, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2So my iPhones battery will last more than a day now?
- forcedfx, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2Number 30 you are my favorite element.
- swordedge, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2yes
- dsmx, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Make sure you use de-ionised water though.
- absurdist, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2Someone's off his meds again...
- swordedge, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I've been researching the new aids. The top end ones are,
Controlled by your mobile phone, on/off, volume, and changing audio filters
BluTooth for music and phone so you don't even have a bright blue LED to tell people you are not a crazy person talking to yourself
Very advanced filters so you hear people and not the damn air-conditioner. I swear it is as loud as the TV in my Apt. And no, I can't turn it up, the idiot downstairs has sensitive hearing and the law backs him up, not me.
The BTE (behind the ear) ones don't have a mold, just a tube with the amplifier (about 1/4" long and not much thicker than two pencil leads) and a rather small clear rubber thingy. You see these as a nearly hidden aid with a very small tube snaking in their ear and no molds in sight.
Rechargeable -- Really need to not leave that in the hotel room.
$5000 - $6000 in cost (OUCH) and no, insurance does not exist so far as I know.
Can get a BluTooth transmitter that can attach to your stereo and rebroadcast it to your aids.
I will stick with ITE, in the ear as I can use my Bose OC2's with it on airplanes. Don't think that will work all that well with something not in your ear. - DolphinBlueInc, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I have to agree. This does bring amazing potential to all aspects.
- freakFlag, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1FTA: "The battery can also fail if it dries out ..."
Does anybody else remember having to water their car battery? - Kerath, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1No, because you can't change iphone batteries. Ooh, burnsauce!
- b3owulf, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1i think you missed the important "more"
- donwar, on 10/31/2009, -3/+4HEY ZANZIBUZ TURN YOUR HEARING AID ON! SWORDEDGE JUST SAID THE SAME THING!
- Nerys, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2even better an EV with a good battery (NIMH or this new air battery for example) with an aluminum chassis and plastic body should be able to go 20+ years virtually maintenance free. With the only moving parts in the whole drive train being the electric motor (which will outlive its owner) well there is just not much to break.
this virtually maintenance free nature of EV's is actually one of the primary reasons GM "killed" the Electric Vehicle project with extreme prejudice.
When more than half your profit comes from AFTER the sale of the car. Well you can understand why this scared the crap out of them. - sleestakslayer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1File this under 'cool ***** we will never see.'
- bazzarr, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Do you have an all-in-one scuba outfit\clown costume\ballerina tutu?
- wassim2k, on 10/31/2009, -3/+3Yet another super battery that will never reach production and mainstream use.
- supersonicjim, on 10/31/2009, -1/+1I don't think it'll materialise.
- arpad, on 10/31/2009, -3/+3Hey *****, in case you haven't noticed all this electric vehicle and battery technology stuff turned political a long time ago. When the snot-nosed greenie-weenies wanted what they wanted and wanted now, it turned political.
I'd really rather it not be political. When the technology's ready for prime time then roll out the cheap, convenient, low-polluting electric vehicles. Since they're nowhere in sight the folks who pop wood at the thought of an EV of their very own to show off how deeply they care about the environment demand that everybody's money be spent to get them what they want.
So you can take your complaints about politics and stick them up your zinc-air battery. - compwizrd, on 11/02/2009, -0/+0This will probably help Cochlear implant people the most, as they usually go through 3 675's every day or so... some of the new processors do have rechargeable batteries now.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 10/31/2009, -1/+1Well, are they afraid to find out for sure?
- Barackalypse, on 10/31/2009, -2/+2Energy density hasn't been my primary battery concern for many years. It is permanent capacity loss due to aging or deep discharge or too many cycles that is. This should be well known to anyone that frequently uses a laptop with 3 year old lithium ion batteries and doesn't even get half the battery life they used to out them.
- pe5t1lence, on 10/31/2009, -3/+2It could; it could also zip around the room farting fairy dust, but it won't.
- eljitto, on 10/31/2009, -2/+1Except ninjas...
- THMike, on 10/29/2009, -2/+1Just don't take too much of it! it can be poisonous.
- dhughes, on 10/31/2009, -5/+1You can see electrons?!
- arpad, on 10/31/2009, -14/+6But it's not nearly as good as the *****-air battery which has been proven to cause seven time more excitement among enviro-wackos then any previous, promised, here-any-minute technology.
What it really needs is a catchy name. "Zinc-air" is so boring.
Perhaps it ought to be referred too as the "Hope and Change" battery.
It'll certainly suck up a ton of money and end up disappointing it's most ardent supporters although none of them will admit to their disappointment.. - Frostek, on 10/29/2009, -16/+2No. Think of it as three times your original 100%. Not 100% plus an additional 300%.
