- Surferess, on 07/14/2008, -0/+20Dubai gets all the cool stuff!
- greentime, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10Beautiful! Nice to see development in Dubai take a green course.
- ecomod, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Dubai has so many totally gratuitious developments going up, at least this one is somewhat interesting...
- MikeChino, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6Dubailand will have seven themed worlds and attract 15 million tourists to Dubai by 2010?? I guess that makes this the New Tomorrowland....
- OutLawSuit, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Good to know I can get a ham sandwich at Subway there...
- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5qith the cost of building anything rising dramatically, might as well go the extra mile and be eco-friendly.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Of course, cause they can afford to go the expensive route.
- thestrongrope, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Dubailand? Whats next, AbuDhabiWood?
- Salinesolucion, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Dubailand? Uh oh... Is there going to be a giant Buckminster Fuller dome a la Epcot center?
- funkydude101, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3It's not so much oil money, as it is a place where laundered money goes clean through development. Nonetheless, kudos to them for building interesting stuff.
- nrrrd, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Is Dubailand like an Arabian Disneyland?
- daRoach, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4Our high gas prices at work!
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Hmmmm. I wonder how much energy that thing uses for air conditioning. Dubai is pretty warm this time of year.
- LauraBlu, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Proof those Arabs are smarter than us
- Chirp08, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Imagine if the world could "compete" with dubai, if America put its war budget toward this kind of competitive engineering we would be one hell of an advanced civilization.
- wezults, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3A bit ironic that the source of the oil goes green, but nice nevertheless.
- lornali, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Cool.
- Chirp08, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2The original idea of all the architecture is build up dubai as a tourist center so when the oil DOES run out their economy doesn't crash. They are spending the money while they have it.
- daRoach, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3More like proof of Arabs exploiting our dependence on foreign oil.
- filmbandit, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2can i still xeriscape?
or is this xeritown going to make me look like a terrorist?
xeritown looks like D/FW airport, so . . . i hope not. - Azerael, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2What's the difference?
- digg1t, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2There is also another "Garden City" Concept for Dubai too , by the same people that designed this one X-Architects ...
http://digg.com/environment/Two_Sustainable_City_C ... - zephyrnug, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2not the most awe-inspiring Dubai architecture.
- Woggers, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2mmm... and building an urban center in a desert is sustainable how? It looks energy efficient, but the word sustainable is being used to greenwash many projects
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3Nope. Oil only accounts for 3% of Dubai's economic income now.
97% is service and tourism industries. - daRoach, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1That's what they'd like you to think.
- digg1t, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Turkey Ham ... :)
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -2/+3You are, 80% of the real estate market that is planned or being developed (for example Burj Dubai - has already been reserved and bought my expatriates from Russia, various parts of Europe and millionaires/billionaires across the globe). One sec and I'll find the source for the statistic.
You can check the Burj Dubai website to see all the available suites/apartment spaces left. - daRoach, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1True, If we were as smart we would drill closer to home and would have our own richer economy.
- aceinhibitor, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Righto. Thanks for that. I have clearly under estimated the attraction of the place.
- rancidpony, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1Too bad all the residences will be serving life sentences.
- aceinhibitor, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0Dubai has a population of 1.37 million with the vast majority consisting of low income workers from the Indian subcontinent and the Philippines. Makes me wonder where they are going to find the people to fill all the buildings that have gone up during this incredible construction boom. Surely there is not that many people from developed countries looking to relocate there. I must be missing something.
- thesomkid, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0What else is new? It is fair to say they are behind.
