- EMFK, on 02/17/2009, -1/+9UGH! I have a list of 100 places I want to visit before I depart this Earth. One is Pantanal and another is the Jaguar Preserve in Belize. Hopefully, this will draw further attention to the region and help raise awareness for a global treasure. Forget the Florida Everglades---I'd rather visit Pantanal.
- Cerealkillr, on 02/17/2009, -1/+8If you visit Brazil, you will find that it is a very common topic to be discussed there, but is often ignored by their government. Brazilians are very concerned with their wildlife reserves, but they just need the rest of the world to get behind them.
- HesComing, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6I hate them. I hate the Wetlands. They're stupid and wet, and there are bugs everywhere, and I think I maced a crane, Michael.
- 919kwjc, on 02/17/2009, -1/+5Can I still blame George Bush?
- pumanegra2012, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2How did these factories spring up. With permissions i believe. Corruption is a cancer
- Junkyarddawg, on 02/17/2009, -1/+3Western environmental organizations have stared so myopically at the possible threat posed by global warming that they've missed to guaranteed threats posed by things such as this and the clearcutting of 1/3rd of the Amazon for converting into soy plantations.
Both projects are intentional. In fact, they're decided upon by the Brazilian government for the purpose of "modernizing" Brazil, and has the backing of the world bank. And each will extinguish thousands of species forever, many of which are still unknown to science.
There are several other porjects muc like it, like the proposed damming of the Mekong, which will also extinguish untold number of species. - inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2You know how I know we're not in the matrix?
If we were there would be cheat codes on /b/ by now. - igettheblame, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2The solution is simple: eliminate the humans and leave nature alone
- Todynho, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2There's a lot threatened in Brazil these days. I wish I was optimistic about the future of the Pantanal, the Amazon, the Mata Atlantic Rainforest, and the thousands of miles of gorgeous coastline, biologically unique marine areas and islands. Truth is, the Brazilian government has a hard enough time taking care of their own people today, let alone taking care of the environment for future generations. That said, I hope groups keep trying and continue to put pressure on the bureaucrats. You gain nothing by giving up.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2Mmm... wetlands.
- MikeyMoose, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2They should use that submarine to kill the farmers and industry-types...
- lucascgc, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1Don't cry, flytronix. I'm sure that 2010 is coming, the year José Serra is going to save the country with his magic powers...
C'mon, you maybe agaisnt the actual government, but you can do better on blaming. You guys always do. - had3l, on 02/19/2009, -0/+1It's very wet.
- boredco, on 02/17/2009, -2/+3Probably..
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/34777 - rynTAU, on 02/17/2009, -1/+2Why is there a thumbnail of a submarine on the digg front page?
- drethedog, on 02/17/2009, -1/+2It's a shame.... I used to go fishing with my dad in Pantanal when I was young... Used to catch Dorado fish, 25-45 pounds and 30 minutes to reel it in... Best fight you can have....
- Benoldays, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1rod and reel are for pussies
/joke
these dudes are crazy:
http://www.diveplanet.co.nz/articles%2Fmarlin.asp - Grazzit, on 02/17/2009, -1/+2Article about the wetlands, thumbnail is of a submarine... huh?
- lucascgc, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1Activists are thrown in jail?
Seriously, I don't know what the media is telling you people, but that's not how it works here, I'm sure about that.
And what the hell the government does that is the opposite?
I'm pretty sure the solutions we use are the same that every single country uses, they just aren't enough.
It's a lot of land, and the money is not enough.
It's easy to talk, but almost nobody really helps. - tyran, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1if we live in the matrix, we wouldn't have to worry about ***** like this. matrix would just reprogram *****.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Try pulling in a marlin in the Gulf of Mexico. I thought the bastard was going to dislocate my shoulders!
- waspbr, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1true
1 yard = 0.9144 metres
though in rough approximations such as the bird wingspan the distinction between the two is irrelevant - inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Depart? Where are you going? I plan on staying here on digg for a while and go from there.
- flytronix, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Pantano = swamp in portuguese
- Ttech2, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1What does a sub have to do with a wetlands?
- flytronix, on 02/17/2009, -1/+2most probably because the brazillian government is buying some expensive and old french submarines, while the country is being submerged in disorder and chaos
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Wetland you better have my money by Friday or I will ***** your ***** up!
- siggyfawn, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1"Of the Pantanal's 650 bird species, the largest has a wing span of nearly 3 meters (yards) and the smallest weighs only 2 grams (0.07 ounce)."
Uh, yards? Meters != yards. - GoldenPearl, on 03/07/2009, -0/+0But I thought soybeans were the cure of all of man's problems.
- dandandantheman, on 02/17/2009, -3/+3Wow what a miserable piece of ***** you are! Maybe we should be trying to preserve you and put you in a museum somewhere, truly remarkable!
- Betrayer, on 02/17/2009, -1/+1its a FN swamp 10 times larger then the everglades....
- Junkyarddawg, on 02/17/2009, -1/+1Unfortunately, whenever the rest of the world expresses any views on the way Brazil behaves wrt its environment, the Brazilian government gets offended and does the exact opposite of what the world asks. That's part of the reason why no foreign environmental organizations speak up about the ***** Brazil do, every time they try matters get worse (and activists get murdered or thrown in jail).
- Ishiguro, on 02/17/2009, -2/+2Wetland. Wetland?? Its a swamp. A swamp. A gross icky, swamp.
- cbsx01, on 02/17/2009, -3/+2Natural resources are FINITE. The situation will worsen as the population increases.
- Betrayer, on 02/17/2009, -2/+1WTF? its a SWAMP 10 times larger then the everglades, i think they are allowed to move some dirt around to make it habitable. get a grip people, without food you would not exist!
- goodinohio, on 02/17/2009, -3/+1"Threatened" is when the eco psychos cant make a real case.
- URnotheonly1, on 02/17/2009, -8/+2Dang those socialist are just eating everything up down there
- turbokneegrow, on 02/17/2009, -10/+3People have been screaming about the Brazilian forestland being wrecked for decades. I wish it would just hurry up and disappear so that people with too much time on their hands would stop trying to hand me fliers about it.
