- greenfyre, on 07/24/2008, -2/+3LOL - the oldest Carny trick in the world. Set it up in a way that no one can possibly win and then offer a huge prize. What a scam.
The problem of induction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Popper#Problem_o ... real science does not work by proofs except in pure mathematics.
The scientific method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method means that a 'proof' cannot exist.
So what they have done here is that if anyone brings them a 'proof' then it is disqualified because it wasn't done "in a scientific manner".
And if anyone brings anything other than a "proof" they are disqualified because their contest requires a "proof" They can't lose, you can't win - classic for taking in all the rubes who actually believe junkscience etc.
Meanwhile climatologist James Annan has offered to bet any of the professional Deniers on what happens with the climate, a real bet that you win or lose, and none of the Deniers are up for it http://digg.com/environment/Betting_on_Climate_Cha ... http://digg.com/environment/Scientists_Would_you_b ...
One question though, since they have rigged this so it is impossible to win, why only $500,000? Why not 500 Billion? or 500 sextillion? Since they are not going to pay even if God himself provided a proof why not go big? - cashman57, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2I guess the global warming believers have something to strive for now.

Entrants acknowledge that the concepts and terms mentioned and referred to in the UGWC hypotheses are inherently and necessarily vague, and involve subjective judgment. JunkScience.com reserves the exclusive right to determine the meaning and application of such concepts and terms in order to facilitate the purpose of the contest.
The purpose of the contest is to be a carny-style scam. There is nothing "inherently & neccesarily" vague about it.- greenfyre, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2Hey VC
How about we offer a 500 billion dollar prize for anyone who can _prove_, "in a scientific manner", oh ... I dunno ... how about gravity?
Naturally "the concepts and terms mentioned and referred to will be inherently and necessarily vague,"
Even better, let's charge a $100 registtration fee, purely for administrative purposes.

- BlankVerse, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Hey, let's let a major scientific organization decide. Sorry, they've all decided that man-made global warming is a fact, so they are all biased.
What about the UN. Sorry, they've already made their decision as well, so they must be biased.
Why don't we let the general public decide. No, they've also been fooled by Al Gore and stories about endangered polar bears, so they can't vote.
Say, we could let President Bush decide. Whoops, he's also changed his mind. He's still being an obstructionist about any efforts against global warming, but he has recognized global warming as a fact.
So I guess that we'll just have to rig the contest so that nobody can win it.
