- Lucas123, on 04/28/2009, -0/+40Cage Willy (the sequel)?
- bastardx, on 04/28/2009, -3/+38But he will die unless he returns to his wife and family's home on the moon.
- directedition, on 04/28/2009, -0/+25what the hell are you talking about?
- radicaldementia, on 04/28/2009, -1/+22This is one clear example of how humans and other higher mammals are closely related, and how situations in one can apply to the other. Anyone who's studied whales, dolphins, apes, or other large mammals knows that these species have a society and culture, just like humans. Obviously it's not as complicated as ours, but there is considerable evidence (aside from this incident) that these animals do not and have never fully relied on instinct like other animals.
A good example of a similar situation in humans is with feral children. There are several examples of children who spent part or all of their childhood living in the wild, totally isolated from civilization. Once discovered, none of these children have been able to fully re-integrate into society. In fact, their brains are structured significantly differently from normal people and most have learning disabilities. In the first recorded case, with a young boy named Victor in France in the 19th century, he was actually never able to learn to speak or even fully understand human language. I would guess that Keiko had the same problem. Since he was raised in captivity, he was never able to develop the skills needed to survive in the wild. By the time he was introduced back to the wild, or his version of society, it was already too late and he was unable to adapt just like the feral children. - jamspt, on 04/28/2009, -6/+26Quick Summary: Willie was homeschooled.
- NoNameWorks, on 04/28/2009, -0/+16That is why science is good, it changes if it is wrong. But there was little science regarding freeing Willy.
- Jookly, on 04/28/2009, -0/+16wow, we really need better education. Poor kid.
- Landthatilove, on 04/28/2009, -0/+15I saw the documentary about this on the science channel. These are such intelligent creatures.
- plecostomus, on 04/28/2009, -0/+13WTF?
- Nintendesert, on 04/28/2009, -0/+12It was like releasing a dog or cat on the side of a road in the countryside, or flushing a fish down a toilet. Makes someone feel better for not directly killing their pet, but instead just leads to a slow and agonizing, frightened confused death.
- Joab, on 04/28/2009, -0/+12More like "Why capturing Willy was wrong"
- patond33z, on 04/28/2009, -1/+11the theory of evolution?
- alex7575, on 04/28/2009, -0/+9Wait... Keiko's a male?!?
Why name HIM as if HE were a Japanese girl?!? - CaptainNoPants, on 04/28/2009, -1/+10Nothing to see here, keep moving folks.
- korsoecw, on 04/28/2009, -1/+8i've seen keiko probably 1000 times. I used to feed him at the newport aquarium. great animal. very loving. I'll miss him........
- itsbob, on 04/28/2009, -0/+7Keiko learned to love people as his own, you cant just make him wild again. We saw him while he was in Oregon, we were some of the first people in the display that morning and he swam right up to the window and eagerly checked us out. He could never be wild again, I think it was one of the stupidest things I ever heard when they tried that, its like making domesticated house pets wild.
- Darkpyr0, on 04/28/2009, -0/+7Dear fellas, I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw a narwhal once when I was a calf but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources got me into the waters around Iceland called "Denmark Strait". And a job fishing in the open sea. It's hard work and I try to keep up but my flippers hurt most of the time. I don't think the other orcas like me very much. Sometimes after fishing I go back to the pen and see my trainers. I keep thinking Jesse might just show up and say hello. But he never does. I hope wherever he is he's okay and makin' new friends. I have trouble sleepin' at night. I have bad dreams like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun, an, an rob the Denmark Strait so they'd send me home. I could shoot the other orcas while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense anymore. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old whale like me.
"Willy was here" - V1ncent, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6The worst part of it was after Keiko died, they dragged his carcass on land and buried it. They wouldn't even let him be buried in the sea, finally free.
- DeadlyAlpaca, on 04/28/2009, -2/+8Willy was actually freed?
That information right there just blew my face off. - proxybot767, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6Whalers: We're whalers on the moon,
We carry a harpoon.
But there ain't no whales
So we tell tall tales
And sing our whaling tune. - huskygeek, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6Setting Keiko free into the wild was like sending your dog into the wild and expecting it to hunt and live without humans. It just doesn't work.
- sodaman300, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5Well now.....way to destroy one of my fondest memories of a childhood movie.
- Rivfader, on 04/28/2009, -4/+9I hope all those hippies that wanted to free willy are happy now. WILLY IS DEAD DO YOU HEAR THAT HE IS DEAD! Its all your fault for having a bleeding heart.
- exscind, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5Michael Jackson didn't do it already?
- Gemfinder, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4It should go noted that the guy who directed the movie is a member of PeTA.
- BassMasterP, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4Well what did they expect? Raised in captivity, he had free food everyday and people came and showered him with affection.
He was probably lazy and an attention whore. Why live free but work for your food when you can just swim around in a big pen, get fed twice a day, and have someone pet your head for 45 minutes?
Throw a human in the wild and see how long they last. Same concept - ahawks, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4I know... I didn't really even know there was a Willy. I was a kid back then and I thought it was just some sappy hollywood movie.
- thorstrongstone, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4And so the road to Hell gets another layer.
- FXNGLAS, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3Dugg for Willy. I didn't know he died in 2003. He was a much better actor than Jesse and he didn't even have to say anything.
- rayde, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3I just saw a show about this the other night on PBS by Jean-Michel Cousteau:
http://www.pbs.org/kqed/oceanadventures/episodes/k ...
It was tragic, yet fascinating. They definitely had his best interests in mind but it seemed clear that Keiko wasn't all that keen on the idea. - sdphost, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3And thanks to clueless people who saw Free Willy and wanted the movie to become true ended up ruining the Orca's life.
- Rivfader, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3That I will agree with.
- a2fan, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3@huskygeek -- Depends on the breed of dog I suppose -- strays can go wild, and scavenge and hunt all the time.
- knobbysideup, on 04/28/2009, -1/+4Ok, then how about "willie shouldn't have been captured in the first place" that makes more sense.
- sdphost, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2It got three movies and a cartoon, a new movie/direct to video is probably due soon.
- thesonofdarwin, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Except that he was not cut off from humans. He was not forcibly thrown out and told not to come back. I'd really recommend watching the Jean-Michel special on this, but to try to summarize as best I can:
First they set up a contained enclosure in the bay. Then they opened that enclosure and closed in a huge bay where he acclimated with _constant_ human support for the entirety of the stay. Then they opened up the bay to give him an option of leaving on his own and returning of his own accord. He followed his caretakers out to open water where he met up with wild pods of orcas. For a few years he wouldn't only view from a distance. A few times he went close but exhibited submissive behavior and returned to the boat. He eventually found a pod that would accept him and he migrated with them until he eventually followed a fishing vessel to shore. At the shore people recognized him. Parents were letting their <5yos swim with him in open water. For his safety and the safety of the public this obviously couldn't continue so he was returned to an open pen... so back under the care of people except this time he didn't have the option of leaving.
He was tracked the entire time. He was completely welcome to return to the bay to the safety of his caretakers. They didn't shut him out or abandon him - he chose this on his own. - agentrh84, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Aww, that made me sad :(
- Rudegar, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1heck even fox's and raccoons would have a pretty hard time if we packed shop now
so kids eat your dinner or the trashcan will make a wild animal co-depending :P - s0nicfreak, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Air Bud died of cancer.
- Landthatilove, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1I don't know if they taste good or not. ;-D
- ECDahls, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Mmmm, whale...
- netant, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1And just think what his reaction would be when he sees the hot cashier Jane...
- blast_flame, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1No, enslave willy. I know a mad scientist with a chip that we can insert into his brain to make him do our bidding.
- liuite, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1dogs in other countries roam the street looking for scraps...they get 3 square meals here
- liuite, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1my brother and I freed some homing pigeons once....the cat ate them.
- badenglishihave, on 04/28/2009, -2/+3I was homeschooled so maybe I should take offense but that was still funny.
On a side note, did you know that every President on Mt. Rushmore was homeschooled? - Sherman901, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1Except Who's Nailin' Paylin was awesome.
- sdphost, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1Not necessarily that he died young but he probably would have enjoyed more his life the way it used to with humans instead of trying to cut off his human interaction.
- punkcat, on 04/28/2009, -1/+2homeschooled, or forced to stay at home lest you actually learn something that goes against the bible.
but damn, you are good at spelling. - LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I have watched Free Willzyx about five times and the scene at the end with the dead whale on the moon makes me laugh until I cry every damn time.
