- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+78When i die, i honestly dont give the slightest crap where im buried, i can be thrown into the ocean, thrown out the back of someone's farm. i dont need an actual burial.. If im dead, why would I want to be "embalmed"? Why would i need a coffin? Its not like it will make it easier for me while im dead...

Cremation is the way to go. I'm having my ashes shot into space so a future race of space explorers can find and reanimate me.
- belasco99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51I suppose then Jewish funerals are earth friendly as they do not embalm, and typically only use pine caskets from my understanding
- bromac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Everyone knows that the greenest burial is vapourization by nuclear fire.
- Sluz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Cemeteries always have the best lawn.
- Lyanto, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26you, sir, are made of WIN.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Well then... here's a question: Do we cause more harm in the last 5 years of our life, or in death?
- zclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Getting cremated is actually very bad for the environment as well. The most eco-friendly way to get buried is a new procedure that been spreading in europe (and I think someone posted an article here on it). Essentially what they do is freeze the body with liquid nitrogen and through vibrations break it literally to dust. The metal parts get picked out by magnets and the you get buried in the ground as very nitrogen-rich food for a tree that usualy gets planted above you.
Me personally ... I'm a rock climber so naturally i'd like my remains, whatever form they are in, to be scattered across a mountaintop. - Smills, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14For christs sake people, when will you learn? Stop dying, you are killing the environment!
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Donate me to a zoo to be fed to the tigers or something. They need to eat. Don't chop me up either... freak the little kids out.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I kinda wanna be posed giving the double deuce for my funeral.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@brstilson
Cremation still uses a lot of fossil fuel to incinerate the corpse. It's not easy to burn bone to the point where it becomes ash..
A pine casket or a burlap sack at the bottom of a six foot deep hole is the most environmentally friendly. - Afreyt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Cremation all the way. The next person can have my carbon, I won't need it anymore.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -3/+14@0o0moylan0o0
If you really don't care, you should donate your body to science. Then it can, in a sense, be recycled. Of course, it might be wise to look into how "green" the eventual disposal process is at the scientific institution of choice. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15So let me get this straight: when the "Greens" (which apparently consist of everyone not stupid enough to ***** where they eat) demonstrate that something has negative consequences, they're hypocrites for not developing a perfect method. But then when they develop or support the development of better methods, they're just being alarming since the negative consequences aren't that bad. And of course when they show that the consequences really ARE that bad, they're hypocrites for not developing a perfect method...
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@mrfoos
That'll show em! - nc60659, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Seriously, unless there's a general consensus that your body should be kept intact for generations to come for whatever reason, don't preserve it. Especially when it's going to be six feet under! I totally agree with abandoning all these cemeteries, coffins, and embalming techniques. (Seriously, it's been almost 5000 years, I think the fad of embalming is a bit old now.)
Maybe you can get your body crushed into a diamond if you have the money. Cremations, in my opinion, should not even be considered. Burn you body and cram it in an urn and/or placed in this creepy building of shelves and little cabinets of other people's ashes? Might as well as get crushed into a diamond, though I think cremation might be the first step in the diamond funeral.
Me? I was planning to just donate whatever is still useful to science or medicine. But this green burial sounds kind of nifty. Still nothing I'd burden any relatives with the cost, unless I actually set aside funds for it. - fungible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9When I get old, I want to check myself into a brothel in Tangiers and just do opium for the rest of my life. Then, when I die, they can toss my body in the gutter. That way, my kids don't have to put me in a home or pay for my funeral. And it's ecologically sound!
- kensavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hey is that the tree from the Shawshank redemption movie at the end when Red digs up the box?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Who needs a box? Put me right into the ground, I'd much rather be snackage for the worms than taking loads of cash from my family's bank account. Plus, we won't be needing my body anymore, might as well let me give back to the Earth a little.
- echo2501, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I wanna be mulched.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My dad is the Director of the Islamic Cemetery of California (In Lodi California, named this because I think it was the first in California).
This is a normal burial for us...
We have to bury the body as soon as possible because we believe you are not supposed to extend the wait of two things, marriage and death. That's why we do not believe in using life support also...
None of the bodies buried here are embalmed, the only reason a Muslim would be embalmed was if they flew the body over seas.
Nobody gets a special casket, a special 'view' or special clothing. Everyone is buried in a white cloth covering the body from head to toe, in the same type of cement box 4-6 feet underground.
A funeral is usually like this...
The Hearst brings the body in a temporary casket-type box with a window, if the deceased is male it's open casket and everyone can view the deceased. If the deceased is female, only the family can view the deceased.
We then do a prayer towards the east for the deceased (Janaza)
After the prayer, the "box" is carried over to the grave where family members lower the body wrapped in white cloth into the grave (which is a cement box with a dirt bottom and a cement slab for the cover) themselves.
The "cover" is lowered into place.
People then start to shovel dirt onto the grave, this is meant to help the deceased move on. Sometimes it gets pretty crazy when everyone wants to shovel at once and there are only about 10 shovels.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7no stomping the body to little pieces then placing the remains into a burlap sack and using it as agri-fertilizer is definitely the most environmental
- dudemanbro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9We get it already. Everything is bad for the environment.
- skiloup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Although 'my death is bad for the environment' I'd be willing to bet that by NOT dying it'd be worse.
- ijeff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Digg me down please.. wrong reply
- titansix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For those interested, I have a video of a green cemetery here in Ithaca, NY, called GreenSprings. You can view the video here: http://groovygreen.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=262&Itemid=58
- chaoshauk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Zombies wouldn't be a problem anymore... they'd all be decomposed. Unless the trees came alive, then you just need a chainsaw or flamethrower. Plus I don't think zombie trees would move very fast, probably slower than your average zombie.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8DiggLord, I'm hiring someone to be a scientific advisor for my multibillion dollar corporation and would be delighted if you'd join our team. You appear to have everything it takes.
- qber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's not weird, it happens all the time in the natural world. What is "fricken weird" is your chemical-soaked remains resting in a satin lined airtight box.
- chubbstar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7you idiot. the VAST MAJORITY of funerals involve embalming in canada. get your delusions right before making an ass of yerself.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4composted!! like in Sweden, freeze-dried by nitrogen, vibrated into dust, placed in a biodegradable cornstarch box.
- everetts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Jack, in a way I agree and in a way I don't. I think, as an individual, you don't have much of an impact. But as an aggregate, humans sure as HELL have had an impact! Look around you man. Go to a hillside just at the outskirts of a big city and look at the smog. I was in Taiwan for a week and lost my voice just from breathing in pollution it was so bad. It's not just a matter of "rearranging materials". Yes, matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it only changes form. I guess that's what you're getting at. But you can change matter from a harmless form into a harmful form, which is one of the ways we're destroying the planet.
It was a look into traditional Western burials, and sparked some debate. It made a few people look at their future burial differently, and question why it is that we still embalm.
It's not saying Don't Die! like some ignorant people are assuming just be reading what was just meant to be a catchy title. All it says is, here are the consequences of our current burial techniques, and here is an alternative you can think about. No biggie, so I don't see why some people are getting their panties all up in a bunch. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Here's a link of the process for getting yourself or loved ones turned into a diamond...creepy. http://www.lifegem.com/secondary/LGProcess2006.aspx
The widow displays her hand and the diamond sparkles on her ring, "I always said I had him wrapped around my finger." - whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4I want a big cedar tree to be planted along with me. Then when they eventually cut it down to make a telephone pole, I can look down from heaven and see that even though I'm gone, my massive pole still remains.
- xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I for one will be buried in sackcloth.
- jpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe I missed it, but nobody's mentioned Soylent Green as a way of disposing of bodies? :)
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Cremation still uses a lot of fossil fuel to incinerate the corpse. It's not easy to burn bone to the point where it becomes ash.."
But that's only temporary. I'd rather have some smoke in the air for a few days than gallons of embalming fluid polluting the ground water. - americanuck, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14alright fine fine fine, liberal wackos. I'll give in. I'll be the first to step up and volunteer not to die.
- Henley24, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5A good book on the topic: Mary Roach's Stiff. Chapter 11 is this whole topic.
She discusses all thw details of the deceased body, and mentions a process of freeze-drying the remains, putting them through a wood chipper and making people-mulch. Same outcome as the article/page: a tree memorial to you.
Much cleaner than cremation. - geonlab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your death is good, there is no denying it. Death, on aggregate is the best number to throw into the system of infinite growth. All the rest of you are talking.
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want a natural burial, so that my nutrients are absorbed into the rich top soil and fertilize the plant life that grows in it. Then, over millions of years, some of the carbon molecules that I was made of, mixed in with many others, will be transformed into a petroleum deposit. After that, I'll be pumped out of the ground and some ***** will burn me inside the bowels of his over-sized SUV, sending what remains up into the atmosphere, where I shall block thermal radiation and cause global warming. The cycle will be complete.
- artificial001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cremation LoL
- Kratisto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The whole obsession with preserving a corpse is a bit strange, if you as me. I intend to be thrown in a ditch and left to rot after I die. "From my rotting body, flowers will grow, and I am in them, and that is eternity"
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3I'm going with the fetal-pig style preservation in a mason jar filled with the salty tears of all the heart-broken private school girls that will pine for me. You know, what with the zombie uprising and all.
- whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cool. straight into the oven for me. i guess there's nothing i can do about the emissions from me incinerating. consider that my final ***** you to the earth.
- Falcon19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Viking Funeral

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They are not Muslim according to us, therefore we don't bury them... or even deal with them. Besides, there aren't many cases like that in California anyway.
