- ericjohnson0, on 09/04/2008, -2/+35I lived in Florida for years. We knew Not to live on the Ocean, or like our friends in New Orleans, under sea level.
Now, why should I have to pay for people who choose to live in high risk areas... - paradexes, on 09/04/2008, -5/+37The worst disaster to hit us yet had disaster written all over it....Disaster Movie.
- PleaseJustDie, on 09/04/2008, -3/+33Because in a good socialism you are just as responsible for that person's bad decisions as they are.
- connieLingus, on 09/04/2008, -1/+27perhaps the fact that we have 4 or 5 24-hour news channels that bombard us with scare tactics has a small something to do with it.
and, oh yeah, the internet. - Birukun, on 09/04/2008, -2/+25About time someone figured it out - DONT LIVE WHERE THIS HAPPENS
Native Americans somehow knew....... and they did not even have weather.com! - Junior612, on 09/04/2008, -2/+23I like typing (shift)FUNDS until an earthquake happens. That is my kind of disaster.
- sofaKing812, on 09/04/2008, -3/+19Fools, as the number of pirates decreases, His noodly rage increases. RAmen.
http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/ - deadonbroadway, on 09/04/2008, -4/+20Why disasters are getting worse? Because you touch yourself at night.
- pauldy, on 09/04/2008, -0/+15Uhm, as population densities increase so do the impact of such natural disasters. Pretty freaking common sense only thing these articles prove is that there is such a biase towards faulting someone anyone will do even ourselves.
- orlyfactor, on 09/04/2008, -0/+15Oh, and the population has increased just a tad since 1926.
- c0mputar, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15Anyone else laugh at the houses that were like 30 feet away from the levees that were being overtopped? Who in their right mind would move there? Especially after Katrina...
- KSUdesigner, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15In New Orleans it doesn't make a huge difference how far from the levy you are, the whole damn place is below sea level.
- orangefly, on 09/04/2008, -1/+13cow farts, emo, and reality tv.....

- thelif, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9Obligatory:
this is digg, so yes lots. - rjc5056, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9I don't know how they're able to keep making each one exponentially worse than the last. I'm only going off of what the critics and acquaintances (because I really couldn't be friends with someone who watches such tripe) tell me about these movies, but if they plan on outdoing themselves in terribleness, the next one pretty much has to be a snuff film with a continuous sound loop of those old "Wassssaaaaaaap!" commercials.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -4/+12"But even if greenhouse gas emissions plummeted miraculously next year, we would not expect to see a big change in disaster losses." That settles that - no hybrid for me!
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8You didn't read the article, did you.....
"If climate change is having an effect on the intensities of storms, it's not obvious in the historical weather data. And whatever effect it is having is much, much smaller than the effect of development along the coastlines. In fact, if you look at all storms from 1900 to 2005 and imagine we had today's populations on the coasts, as Roger Pielke, Jr., and his colleagues did in a 2008 Natural Hazards Review paper, you would see that the worst hurricane would have actually happened in 1926." - pauldy, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7Pissing in it only makes it stronger.
- omelette, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7You don't want to stack us up (high-rises), or spread us out (sprawl)... you don't want us in the forest or farmland but don't want us to concentrate into one area either... I see why you're having a hard time with a solution.
- FlyingPhotog, on 09/04/2008, -1/+7It's because CNN says so.
- FuzzyBunny, on 09/04/2008, -1/+7Umm, the impact of disasters has nothing to do with what type of dwelling it is or how aesthetic it is, or if it ruins your view. It has to do with the location of the home, nothing else. An ugly McMansion in Wisconsin has absolutely nothing to do with hurricane damage. Sorry you'll need to find a different, valid, reason for being so pissed off about other peoples' homes.
- Otto, on 09/04/2008, -1/+7What perspective are you trying to offer here, exactly? That of the ignorant religious nutjob?
Because if so, well done. - havek23, on 09/04/2008, -3/+9they might be happening a little more commonly, but some of it is that world media/communication is a LOT better with the Internet and such.
- ghostfaceDX, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6I would normally bury a comment with the word tripe in it... but any word analogous to "Steaming pile of *****" works in my book, if you're talking about Disaster Movie. God it doesn't even deserver capitals
- dood, on 09/04/2008, -1/+7Basically, storms are bullies. If you don't pay attention to them they go away. The sane thing to do is to keep rebuilding the houses exactly where they are now, with no additional precautions.
- orlyfactor, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6"Before we become hopelessly lost in despair, however, there is good news: we can do something about this problem. We can enact meaningful building codes and stop keeping insurance premiums artificially low in flood zones." - yeah, but that won't happen. People have too much money to make developing real estate on the coasts and the population of people continues to rise, causing more and more people to fill every nook and cranny of available space. It's what I like to call the Thomas' English Muffin theory.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+6That is kind of what the article was saying. The storms are not getting worse, they just seem worse because of where we live and how we have built up.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5So it's not global warming, it's really our oceans. The ocean already owns most of the earth, and now it wants more and will use floods, hurricanes and tsunamis to rid all of us pesky humans once and for all. Hell, next time I swim in the ocean, I'm going to piss in it.
- katorga, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5What is different is that there are more and more people to be impact. Pompeii killed what? 20,000 people? Today 3 million live around Mt. Vesuvius.
Its like movies. Every new blockbuster is the highest gross "in history" simply because there are more potential customers than ever before for a blockbuster. - FuzzyBunny, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5So they've lived there since the beginning of time? Poor or Rich, at some point someone made a conscious decision to move into a house that had a very high probability of flooding.
- ghostfaceDX, on 09/04/2008, -0/+5Christ! Various disasters happening in various places?!
FEARFUL EVENTS?
***** ME. - stix213, on 09/04/2008, -1/+6Were those hurricanes even properly vetted?
- mfured20, on 09/04/2008, -1/+6I live in the middle of the country, so i dont have to worry about hurricanes or earthquakes... only storms with 2+ feet of snow tend to shut down my city pretty effectively, and i stay at home for weeks while it gets cleaned up... some places are less likely to get smashed than others, but you have possibilities everywhere.
- Iztikeit, on 09/04/2008, -1/+5Wait until there are 20 billion people on this planet.
- anillop, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4Nope your the only dick around here.

Any virgins in the house? - stix213, on 09/04/2008, -2/+6What happened to Bush causing Katrina? And global warming actually isn't making storms worse? The problem after all is that people are moving to coastal blue states?
How is the DailyKOS going to explain this? I was told Republicans are responsible for ALL the world's problems. Could this again be the fault of that selfish brat daughter of Sarah Palin? Her pregnancy seems to be the root cause of a lot of the country's problems. - thall, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4@motivaedguy
We all get it, that being told to move somewhere else really sucks. On the other hand, everyone living there was well aware of the risk and had plenty of time to move, on their own schedule, before it was too late. In this case the logic overwhelms the emotions; this wasn't some unpredictable freak storm, it was a typical hurricane that hit an area at risk of flooding. - chesscat, on 09/04/2008, -1/+4What's getting worse are people's memories.
- biogears, on 09/04/2008, -1/+4Here are the things caused by global warming:
http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/warmlist.htm - taylorhempel, on 09/04/2008, -0/+3Quit while you're behind.
Read the article.
Stop making people from Wisconsin look bad. We have a hard enough time proving that we're not all idiots, and you're not helping the cause. - samdu, on 09/04/2008, -0/+3The older I get, the more I get the feeling that NO sense is taught in schools. Common or otherwise.
- inajeep, on 09/04/2008, -0/+3Common sense is not taught in schools so these things need to be explained simply to most of the population. However, they won't believe it, see it or care most of the time.
- prometheanspark, on 09/04/2008, -0/+3Indeed, the asian Tsunamis and other major disasters in Asia would have been a footnote a couple decades ago.
