- thefirstenemy, on 07/19/2008, -4/+50Wow, it took me way too long to figure out that the red portion was a representation of the amount of land they owned per state, not what land they owned.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -9/+50For all you government conspiracy theorists... The land out west is federal forest area. I would hardly call Federal Forests Preserves a threat which is pretty much open during camping and hunting season. The government is watching you! Oh NOES!
- DonWigler, on 07/19/2008, -5/+42damn it http://digg.com/politics/Who_Owns_The_West_Answer_ ...
- vault, on 07/18/2008, -3/+35We should just move the wildlife to the nuclear testing grounds and then sell the old wildlife reserves to build more malls and Wal-Marts on and stuff.
- Stevanoski, on 07/18/2008, -2/+28Befor the Mexicans it was the Indians.
- FoxOrian, on 07/19/2008, -1/+25I thought the same. "Huh, the government seems to own land in the exact center of each state in the SHAPE of each state. Crafty!"
- dannyboy3020, on 07/19/2008, -2/+25So the government owns a lot of land in the west. What's the big deal?
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -4/+26Mexico owned Alaska and Hawaii?
- boiserck, on 07/19/2008, -0/+19Being from Idaho, and having lived all over the country, I view this a bit differently. I don't see it all as Govt. owned land but, rather a huge portion of PUBLIC land. This provides the means for many to make a living and on a selfish note tons of the best outdoor recreation to be found anywhere.
There aren't friggin dept. stores and mini-malls covering every stinking spare inch of our states, although we have plenty in town. Also if I may represent the entire NW and apologize for Starbucks. - Wubbawucky, on 07/19/2008, -1/+18Before the Mexicans it was the Spanish, and before the Spanish it was the Natives, and the Native tribes have been warring for territory long before anyone came.
- whorunbartertwn, on 07/19/2008, -1/+17Yup. We came on BLM land all the time out here in Arizona... it's beautiful, it's free, and there's plenty of it.
- dkapuchino, on 07/18/2008, -3/+19Think we should give it back?
- artofficial, on 07/19/2008, -2/+18The fed goes bankrupt and your money is worthless. you'll buy your new land in blood my friend. Just like the good old days.
- SRSco, on 07/19/2008, -8/+23Don't be a typical Diggtard who tries to connect every single ***** thing related to the US Government to Imperialism and Iraq. This really has nothing to do with it.
- vault, on 07/18/2008, -6/+19The 'no gold in Fort Knox' is up there on the list of stupidest conspiracy theories.
- argoff, on 07/19/2008, -6/+19well, the good news is that once the federal govt goes bankrupt, I'll get to pick up some nice land real cheap.
- ChayD, on 07/19/2008, -0/+13Public restrooms
- Julik, on 07/19/2008, -3/+16Why is this news?
Lots of states have Natural Parks, military bases, and Native American Reservations... I don't understand why anyone would even care. - inactive, on 07/19/2008, -10/+22Oh no nature parks and indian reservations, it's a conspiracy OMG
/s - Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 07/19/2008, -0/+12My care is contrary to the suspected purpose of this story. I want nature reserves and I like Indians. I'm with the govt on this one.
- mikedeezy33, on 07/19/2008, -5/+16Its called forests and deserts people. Stop vilifying everything about the government.
- KMye, on 07/19/2008, -1/+11No, primarily, we LEASE rights to extract resources that would otherwise sit unexercised, creating well-paying jobs, a wealth of state and federal tax revenue, and a kind of real economic wealth that's crucial for any healthy economy...
- KMye, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10Yeah, and it all started with the Louisiana Purchase. ***** you, Jefferson!
- PoSSeSSeDCoW, on 07/19/2008, -1/+11Bartering... with your life!
- MasterGrief, on 07/19/2008, -1/+10Big oil! Uhh.... Big brother!
Nanomachines in the drinking water! - JesusFaction, on 07/19/2008, -2/+11Yeah, and that dumbass can't even link the article properly. Who wants to start out at the comments?
- drewsheldon01, on 07/19/2008, -3/+12Whats wrong with that nobody lives there
- aforce369, on 07/19/2008, -2/+11I'm going to assume you guys realize that the majority of the land owned by the federal government used national parks right? Yellowstone ring any bells?
- Tribis, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9Who submits the most stolen articles on Digg?
- sulthernao, on 07/19/2008, -1/+9Well the "LAW" is wrong. There is nothing heinous about some national parks.
- elipabst, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8I don't know why you're getting dugg down. Fly over most of Nevada, Utah, Arizona and eastern California and you'll see why it's gov't land...its a big ***** desert wasteland. Throw in a few military test ranges and underground nuclear weapons test sites...not exactly prime real estate.
- HolyMan28, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8I wonder what the government does with the land they own in Rhode Island..
- ddawggin, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7They don't pay taxes???
Tax Man: Excuse me, US Government that'll be 100 dollars.
...
Tax Man: Here's the 100 dollars in tax money, minus my work expenses. - SRSco, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Actually, not really. The word "American" is just as foreign as the word "Indian."
Indian is coming back around to being the politically correct term, where you aren't able to specify the exact tribe:
Indian: The preferred term for Native Americans. “Indians either use their specific tribal name or use Indian,” says Sen (Rinku Sen is a 40-year-old South Asian woman. She is the publisher of Colorlines, a national magazine of race and politics, for which she has developed a PC style manual.) “You use the qualifier American when you need to distinguish from Indian Indians.”

- danthepiercer, on 07/19/2008, -4/+9
there is one thing i am quickly learning about digg.com. its ***** predictable.
it is really not necessary to piggyback your dislike for the war onto EVERY article on digg.
yes, the war sucks. yes, imperialism sucks. yes, the US is guilty of both.
try and stay on task next time.
-1 for the 'no ***** *****' factor. - phlux, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5well,
where do you think they are p[lanning on storing all the dissedents once the riots start over the economy and wars...
/tinfoilhat - KnightMareInc, on 07/19/2008, -10/+15whats the point of visiting digg anymore? So much old news making the front page
- QuantumRiff, on 07/19/2008, -3/+8They own more than 40% of my county, and 20% more is owned by the state. They don't pay taxes.. Oregon counties used to get a percentage of the reciepts from timber cutting, but the feds drastically cut it back. So they gave the counties the money for a few years, and just stopped it. My county of 65,000 is trying to figure out how to maintain a few thousand miles of highway and roads (it takes 2-3 hours to drive across my county, its rather big), with 15Million less this year...
- MrWhite7, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Here's a tip: when you're researching, don't rely on websites which only require an email address to set up.
- Buelldozer, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Totally, completely, and 100% FALSE. Absolutely none of what you said is true and the linked map is itself untrue.
I LIVE in one of those red zones labelled "no human use". In fact there's a town of 50,000 people here!
Good grief. - kahlessreborn, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5What is .4 % of Rhode Island, does teh Federal Government own a house or something?
- xZeddx, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4As a taxpayer, I would like to use my share of the land to grow an obscene amount of cannabis. You're all welcome.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -7/+11Ron Paul is a loser
- mehan, on 07/19/2008, -2/+6No, Alaska was owned by Russians, and Hawaii by Hawaiians.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -4/+8digg hates america
- anaesthetica, on 07/19/2008, -1/+5He linked to the comments because if he hadn't the URL would have been the same as DonWigler's submission. Submitting the exact same URL would just make him Digg DonWigler's submission. In order to resubmit content that someone else already submitted, he linked to the comments so that the URL was different.
Same old ***** behavior. - nixfu, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4To be fair..the US government did PAY FOR IT all.
