- krische, on 11/04/2008, -1/+15I wish the speed limit was 75 up here in Wisconsin. Were stuck with 65 on the interstates.
- Jvlog, on 11/04/2008, -8/+21buried for being dumb enough to use a bridge for cover
- BossKey, on 11/04/2008, -0/+11At that point 75 MPH is the minimum speed limit...
- 12916studios, on 11/04/2008, -0/+10LMFAO @ #5.
- Destrucci, on 11/04/2008, -4/+13Unless your avoiding hail.
- serif69, on 11/04/2008, -1/+10I actually saw a tornado form just like that in Gilbert, Arizona, of all places. I was driving south on Power Rd and could clearly see the vortex loosely forming to the west. A minute or so later, it had tightened into a conical formation before elongating and touching down. I had never seen anything as amazing, and count myself lucky that I was far enough away from it that I could watch without ***** bricks.
- kangy3213, on 11/04/2008, -1/+9you'll ***** bricks
- centran, on 11/04/2008, -0/+8If you know the bridge will get hit by a tornado then yes, an open field is better then under a bridge. The reason being is that the underpass acts as a wind tunnel accelerating the windspeed and projectiles in the air. You will most likely be sucked up and thrown through the air with any tornado bigger then an F1.
Lying flat down on the ground in a ditch is your best bet for survival. The tornadic winds cannot get underneath you so it will not lift you up in the air. Also projectiles fly through the air. Since you are low to the ground you are lowering your chance of getting hit since object don't get thrown at ground level but get tossed up. Your only worry about laying in a ditch is having something get dropped on you and that will most likely happen a couple seconds to 30 seconds after the tornado passes you.
Seeing as I have a slight chance to move out of the way of something crushing my I would rather lay flat in an open field then get sucked out of an underpass and hurled 200+ feet. - gaapgod, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7This is actually not a pic of the funnel cloud, but of a Rear-Flank downdraft or tail-cloud, which are characteristics of tornadic thunderstorm.
Check out the pic at link: http://beertap.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/atlanta ...
The area to the right which appears to be near the ground is the tail cloud, while the tornado is on the left side of the pic. BTW this is also the first tornado to ever hit downtown Atlanta, my hometown.
Check out this cool site on tornado genesis: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www. ... - SlaveToTheBean, on 11/04/2008, -3/+9That ain't no cloud...it's a flying jellyfish, ready to pounce on it's unsuspecting prey, the elusive 18 wheeler.
- kangy3213, on 11/04/2008, -3/+9***** speed limits, I drive a Kia

Yeh good thing you got the ***** out of there then. - gaapgod, on 11/04/2008, -2/+6That movie was about as realistic as McCain's chances tomorrow.
- baseballnick211, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4GET TO THE CHOPPER!
ARGHH! - shenmueguru, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3...there's a 75 mph speed limit? News to me.
- nebloof, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3Exactly. The safest thing you can do is either get out of the car and get in a ditch, or drive perpendicular to the storm if the roads make that possible..
- nighthawk8713, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6I'd rather have small bits of ice hit my car than large chunks of concrete.
Also: *you're - doublefelix, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3I think that would be a thrill of a lifetime. I dream about them too. In them I'm not in some random manufactured home that gets hit, but driving around, feeling with a pop in my ears that barometric pressure drop, the skies opening up with hail battering my (rental, yeah rental) car, lightning and thunder making it sound like all hell is breaking loose, then watching as one of those monsters touches down in the fields about 2 miles away sucking up darkening dirt, rubbish and livestock into its' angry maw. In the dream the car usually vanishes somehow and I'm left there standing or running ineffectually in place like I'm on a tread mill. Yeah, I probably have issues.
- jdoublehcubed, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3lol @ kia. thats the funniest comment ive seen in a while.
- shenfrancisco, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Some close up view:
http://www.linkinn.com/_Close_Up_View_of_Tornados - crimsonkage, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Wow gunna have to remember this. Standing in a field swearing at a tornado is better than being under a bridge.
- areyouserious, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Great link!
- CatsAreGods, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Good luck, spaceball.
- Juntistik, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2This was a hail storm, I don't believe that a tornado touched down.
Why would you get out of the car and in into a ditch during a hailstorm? - 2of8, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2You're sure? Is that your gut talking? And you want somebody to trust that over, say, someone who works in the field? ( for example: http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/basics/t ... )
Sigh. - SlaveToTheBean, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3Nice...I used to on Power @ Baseline...i bet the dust was fun to drive through...
- n8dude, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Incredibly vivid description. Now I have the same dream... (probably not a good thing either)
- kangy3213, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2making fun of kia sir
- optigrab, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2doesnt it occur to people that the tornado will duck under the overpass?
- mrsack, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2They look like hands reaching down. The cloud people will surely invade one day.
- mastercosby, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I can't tell if you are making fun of Kia or trying to be a badass.
- drex8, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I was driving back from Mississippi to Chicago on I-55 with a tornado right on my tail. People were speeding on the highway just to escape it, like there's no tomorrow. And so did I. Happened like 7 years ago. It was one of the most dangerous and thrilling experience ever.
I'll never forget it. - CrushThemTorg, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Damn – lookit that sumbitch go. He haulin' ass!
- chakalakasp, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1RFD's are usually dry, not wet. That ain't no RFD. Not sure if you're tossing around terms you're unfamiliar with or if you just know something about this storm that I don't, but if you really think that big cloud hugging the ground is a "RFD tail cloud" (a tail cloud and an RFD are entirely different things, BTW), then I'd curious as to your explanation.
- IIECONII, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pbqGsS5iB4
Fastest wind speed ever recorded. F5. Cameramen die.
Maude: Kmon Ned, move this thing!
Ned: I CAN'T, IT'S A GEO!
Seriously I would be screaming at the driver to turn the ***** around!
WHIP A GOD-DAMN U-IE!!!
Damn nature, you scary. - dngermouse, on 11/04/2008, -2/+3awesome pic
- LogitechG15, on 11/04/2008, -3/+4Great picture, would love to use it as my wallpaper, but to small. Maybe for a portable device though.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Oh, ok, I'll eat crow. I've just always heard that overpasses are supposed to be unsafe in a tornado, but I never head of a comparison between that situation and just staying on the highway. I'd like to see video of some sort of representation of someone lying in a ditch to avoid a tornado.
- FlyingPhotog, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Funny coincidence that I'm watching "Stormchasers" right now. Amazing shot.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2It's not stupid if it's the only thing you can do. All your citation said is that it isn't adequate. Do you really think you're better off just stopping in the middle of the highway in plenty of open space rather than chilling under a bridge? I'm sure your probability of survival would go up a little bit if you stay under a bridge or overpass.
- thaitan, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Damn nature, you scary!
and cool :] - h3lx, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1 Next to 155mm artillery firing for effect, tornadoes are the single most destructive thing I've ever had the misfortune to witness up close and personal. I was more than lucky to be alive... twice.
- mastercosby, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Its hard to tell if people are being sarcastic without the /s these days...
- crazyjake, on 11/04/2008, -2/+3LUCKY!!! i wish i could see a tornado like that in person.
