- slicksoul999, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5Arizona State has these, never seen anyone use it though.
- ivan423, on 06/13/2009, -0/+3Good idea, I am going to steal the solar panels.
- TheMachine1, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2Energy savings(gas from waste disposal truck) and labor cost saving will come from making for fewer pickups.
- collution, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2Cookie monster is that you?
- eq2s, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2you didn't finish your senten
- Jables2112, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2Don't quote me on this but i'm pretty sure solar panels run themselves
- Satanael, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2ACTION PACKED TRASH CANS
That's what they're called in Austin.
Yeah, no one uses this *****.
You're having to convince the public to touch the handle of a TRASH CAN that may have been used by hundreds of others before you, pooped on by countless birds, and puked in or on numerous times... No thank you. I'm already having to elbow and knee my way out of public bathrooms. - mzhao, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2"Solar-powered trash compactor"?
http://is.gd/111Lu - jiesa, on 06/13/2009, -0/+2This is the same country where houses are being stripped of copper, right? ...So how is this a good idea?
- mjm65, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1This seems like overkill for a trash can. Compacting motors, network interfaces, and solor panels seems like a ridiculous solution to taking out the trash more often.
- RuthlessPirate, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Nah its still kinda ridiculous.
- reiner15, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1Good for WM. I know it's more a cost savings to them, but these would be great everywhere.
Although after first reading the title I thought maybe the lids of all of their trashcans would be solar panels that would store energy into batteries that their waste trucks could charge from when making each stop... then I realized how dumb that would be. - weeFred, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1In the UK we have trash receptacles that have a hole in the top or the side so that you don't have to touch anything. Maybe they should design them like that.
- weeFred, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1Not really when you think of the resources and money it would save.
- patswald, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1cute one, that great! thanks!
- weeFred, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1I see, maybe they could instead use a motorised sliding door with a sensor which knows when it's securely shut so that it can compact safely.
- milkmage, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1what do you mean "use"?according to their FAQ, all you have to do is throw stuff away, it does the rest.
http://www.bigbellysolar.com/faq/index.shtml - mreaston, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1I was thinking the same thing. How long until these are stolen or destroyed?
- Ghostalker, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1I've seen em used out here in a few state parks and on some popular trails in the desert. My sister even took a picture of one and sent it to NY (cause solar power is a myth up there).
- marx2k, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1Germs. They're coming for you, and they're pissed. Do you really elbow/knee your way out of public bathrooms?
- milkmage, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1we have those in the states too, but these things need the door (hopper) so idiots don't get their arms cut off... believe me, it will happen somewhere (afterall we're Americans).
from their faq.
The trash collection hopper prevents hands from reaching into the compaction area. The unit is locked and will not operate when the front or top doors are open. The machine runs on a safe low voltage system. - Greza, on 06/13/2009, -1/+0Obtain enough of those suckers and one could power their entire house, not to mention practically free trash service.
- syntaxgs, on 06/13/2009, -3/+1uh and how much poweer waste is there too run the solar panel =P kind of use less if you ask me,,, trash can not need too be electr
