- ColonelTribune, on 05/28/2008, -2/+118"Wind turbines kill fewer birds than house cats." Damn cat-killing wind turbines.
- mentallyinhell, on 05/28/2008, -4/+41Now all we need is a president in bed with the wind and solar industry, and we'll be set!
- bremstrong, on 05/28/2008, -4/+32Some communities oppose the turbines because they don't want to see them, even though entire mountaintops in West Virginia are removed to generate the electricity they currently use.
I think the turbines look great. What's needed is a PR campaign with featuring beautiful turbine footage, nice music, with comparison shots of the desolation coal mining creates. - jasdf, on 05/28/2008, -0/+13Also know as a hydroelectric plant.
- borez, on 05/28/2008, -0/+10"One of the more popular examples of this involves a U.S. Senator trying to prevent the building of a wind farm in his favored sailing seas."
What a tosser - malex, on 05/28/2008, -2/+12Oh, come on. His opposition to the project in Nantucket sound is stupid and self-centered, but he's hardly the biggest barrier to wind power in the US. If you're going to pray for his death, come up with a better reason.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 05/28/2008, -3/+13We'd be closer if it wasn't for Kerry and Kennedy protection of their favorite yachting spots
- hiPpymIck, on 05/28/2008, -1/+10i still havent figured why no one colors them..
you might be able to get some fun effects with a whole farm - Gazoo2001, on 05/28/2008, -0/+8Who isn't an advocate of blow jobs?
- philipl411, on 05/28/2008, -0/+7I've seen it. The cats are all hanging out, they get alittle to much catnip and before you know it, one things leads to another. They are betting who can "one up" the other. Cat crawls to the tower out onto one of the blades. They think their claws can hang on. It is kinda funny seeing the cat holding on to the tip of the blade swinging around and around and around. But sooner or later they are launched off the end,the cat is chunked several hundred yards. most don't survive, those that do swear off the "nip" for ever. Scared straight they are
- jcannonb, on 05/28/2008, -1/+8I am all for clean renewable energy anywhere. Just make it closer to affordable, and I am on top of it for every thing I use.
- redcolumbine, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6Great idea!
- sodade, on 05/28/2008, -2/+8For the SouthWest I'd think that solar thermal would be the ticket. States like Arizona and New Mexico have huge amounts of cheap, crappy land that would be perfect for solar thermal plants. Considering that the tech is simple and that risk management issues are minimal (compare nuke plants which require extreme risk management measures), I am surprised that the SW hasn't already planned to go 100% solar thermal. I guess NM wouldn't do it because it would piss off the elites in the state whose livelihoods depend on atom splitting...
- inigomntoya, on 05/28/2008, -1/+7Isn't that funny how those Kennedy's are pro-renewable energy - "Jest, uh, naught in my, uh, backyad!"
- inigomntoya, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6Uh - yeah. Looks like Millions were killed in that accident. Oh the humanity!
- Ev3nt372, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5I actually would like to see a large version of this windmill design. It can stand much higher wind velocity and takes wind from any direction.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9flSPAdOLk - george2gfm, on 05/28/2008, -8/+13You are going to have to build a serious amount of wind turbines to power 20% of the US.
Let's stick with nuclear. - Azuroth, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5The downstream river has now completely changed in makeup. Temperature differences, amount and type of silt it carries, stuff like that. It has a tendency to kill lots of the native wildlife that depends on the river.
- 3tcp, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5'wind turbines kill fewer birds than house cats"
Thank you. Can we finally put this ***** argument to rest? This rumor really seems more like an effort for coal & natural gas power producers to manipulate environmentalists into destroying their own cause with lame ***** like 'it will kill too many pigeons and ducks' - ricksite, on 05/28/2008, -2/+6"stick with nuclear" Why not diversify our energy sources so someday if nuclear becomes a problem, we aren't SOL? I am not by any means anti-nuclear. I just don't like to see us relying on one technology.
- borez, on 05/28/2008, -2/+6Everybody's talking about wind farms, but I think we should also be re-examining the concept of the watermill for generating electricity
- statstudent, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5agreed. coal and oil makes us strong. except for the people who get lung cancer or asthma from the emissions. but who cares about them?
- cowsgonemadd3, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5How about before 2030??......Make more jobs by the thousands and build these things in the next 10 years!
- Gazoo2001, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3What hydroelectric people are excited about these days I think is called "run of river" hydroelectric. You divert a section of a river, let it flow through turbines, return it to the main body of the river. You don't get huge reservoirs built up like you do behind a dam.
- Bronowyn, on 05/28/2008, -2/+5This is a silly example, I guess, but in the Wii Fit, one of the games is a jog.
Stay with me here.
And the scenery is beautiful. At one point in your run, you can see wind turbines in the background. It does not detract from the lovely cartoonish run. - jasdf, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3What exactly is the issue? False returns from Doppler shift of the blades?
- Barackalypse, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2I suggest we wait, let Europe waste it's money subsidizing installations of these things when they aren't yet cost effective and the technology is still in flux, and then whenever it becomes economic to do it, we pay less money for better technology and get a positive rate of return! Then we can begin to blight the landscape with 400 foot tall towers on every hilltop and ridge line. You won't even notice ugly cell phone towers among the mess.
- Twee, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2He's talking about clean renewable energy, not $4/gal gasoline. If you had solar panels and an electric car then you wouldn't have to pay for gas.
- Langford, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2There are some windmills up near Abilene that are quite breathtaking. If you are in the ares, I suggest seeing them in person. Up close these things are huge.
I have pictures, but it's not as good as in person:
http://langford.deviantart.com/art/Windmills-No-1- ...
http://langford.deviantart.com/art/Windmills-No-2- ... - inactive, on 05/28/2008, -10/+12Hopefully when Sen Ted Kennedy (D) dies we will start to make big strides in wind power. He represents the Democratic old guard that is vehemently opposed to alternative energy sources.
- Tyr7BE, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3Out of curiosity, why are they so terrible? Granted, you get a small reservoir where there once was a river (is that really bad?), but other than that what's the problem?
- delmar14, on 05/28/2008, -3/+5I'd take nuclear over wind any day.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Spoken like a politician, no clue at all what's going on.
- Danikar, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2I lol'd
- lettruthout, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Every look at a nuclear plant? How about a uranium mine? How about nuclear waste? Do you find these pretty?
What's ugly about wind turbines? They're graceful. Personally I'd love to have them up on the mountains near my home.
So you'd want a nuclear plant next to yours? - jcannonb, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2You are 100% correct, that is what I am talking about. We should ween ourselves *completely* off fossil fuels.
- jedicurt, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2No they don't... i deliver the WSR-88D data for the NWS, and they don't have to know a thing... the computer programs that they use to analyze the data filter out almost all of the ground clutter... The issue involving wind turbines have not been an issue at all since about 2002... all it took was someone to look at all of the false or negative reading that could be created by the turbines and figure out a computer algorithm to filter it out.
- Bmarofsky, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3I am all for Wind Farms. It was a real treat to watch parts being shipped down I81 in Maryland everyday for months this past winter. Those blades are huge!
- Haoie, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Here in New Zealand, the majority of our power is hydro generated.
We also have a good number of wind farms, and are planning more. - lettruthout, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Wind sounds so much better than nuclear. Why encourage use of dangerous nuclear technology that will leave a legacy of superfund sites for future generations? Besides this is failed technology. We've had decades of research but still have no answer to waste and the industry cannot stand on it's own without government support. We need to concentrate on conservation and sustainable energy instead.
- orlyfactor, on 05/28/2008, -1/+22030? Come on, we need to act sooner. How hard can it be to make a bunch of wind turbines and solar power plants?
- orlyfactor, on 05/28/2008, -1/+2And we all live to piss off "elites".
- ratexla, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1With a bit of luck...
In the meantime... I think someone observed eagles learning to avoid the blades in their own lifetime even. But I could be wrong. :p - mrweasel, on 05/28/2008, -3/+4Denmark has already reached that goal. For the last few years 21-25% of the electricity in Denmark has been provided by windmills. For a little over a day during the christmas holidays 2006 100+ % of the electricity was generated by windmills.
There is a small problem introducing windmills on the grid in the US, they do not play well with nuclear powerplants. Windenergi isn't constant and require that the rest of the power grid can adapt to their output rather quickly, to ensure a reliable supply of electricity. Nuclear reactors don't like being adjusted all the time, they work best when running with a constant output. Danish engineers looked at how to introduce nuclear power in Denmark last year, first thing the concluded was that the windmills would have to go. Denmark isn't looking at introducing nuclear power, it was done for an article in the engineering unions newspaper. - tangorooster, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1This seems like a smart idea
- jloutey, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1This statistic seems kind of misleading. How about "Wind turbines will lead to almost twice as many bird deaths as house cats alone." I mean seriously, cats do kill a lot of birds.
But really the better slogan should be "Who gives a ***** about the birds, we're trying to prevent Armageddon here." - jedicurt, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1As for as i know... it is no longer an issue... I work every dat with the WSR-88D data, and work with Meteorologists who provide the radar images for slightly under 2/3rds of the TV broadcast market... if you happen to know of a group of people that are still having these issues... let me know who they are... i can always use new clients to help out
- lettruthout, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1"someday if nuclear becomes a problem"
Let's see...
1) waste is a terrorist target
2) unable to store waste safely
3) domestic supplies very limited
4) industry unable, even after decades, to exist without government help
5) power plants consume huge amounts of water
6) strong public distrust of technology
7) we'll need to move away from it eventually anyway
Nuclear already has HUGE problems. It's a failed technology. Instead we need to improve our efficiency and move to sustainable energy sources. -
