- serif69, on 04/20/2009, -3/+47I thought the Vatican was already powered by the son...
- tjb363, on 04/20/2009, -0/+39religion....and.... science?
- seanayb, on 04/20/2009, -1/+18This...is awesome! Why the ***** hasn't anybody else done this yet?
Honestly, that we still have energy problems as a species after several thousand years of civilization when there's this GIANT BALL OF FIRE in the SKY that we can use escapes me. - CaptCarrot, on 04/20/2009, -3/+15A Vatican official was quoted as saying, "The sun emits powerful rays of energy every time it revolves around the Earth, and we have 12 hours each day to capture that energy."
/sarc - pmoy, on 04/20/2009, -0/+10I would argue that the hundreds of thousands of Catholich Church directed charitable projects (including orphanages, hospitals, food banks and other works) world wide would qualify as a good use as well.
- vofuse, on 04/20/2009, -1/+10Let there be light.
- sivyr, on 04/20/2009, -0/+9We do pretty well with using that ball of energy for growing our food, and mostly for heating our homes.
Until maybe 200 years ago, those were the only kinds of energy anyone used. There were no "energy problems" before that.
Edit: You can say that water and wind power were used, but weather is powered by the sun too, so really, it still kind of counts. - inactive, on 04/20/2009, -3/+12Cool atleast all the tithings from the churches are finally going to good uses....
- amabaie, on 04/20/2009, -1/+10That is pretty amazing news...I mean, it is just such an unlikely story.
- davetyler, on 04/20/2009, -3/+11*Insert Gallileo joke here*
- PurpleTentacle, on 04/20/2009, -0/+8They are freeing themselves from a dependence on oil (or more to the point, oil held by Islamic lands). A smart political/economic move.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+8Actually the Vatican for the last century has been more open-minded about science than Islam or evangelical protestant Christianity has. Pope Pius XII supported the big bang theory and the Church allows the teaching of evolution in many Catholic schools.
- PenguinChaser, on 04/20/2009, -0/+8God that's cool.
- MikeG4936, on 04/20/2009, -1/+7Because it's a country (nation-state).
- Chooxo, on 04/20/2009, -1/+7Coupled with ugly people being able to sing, I now think I've seen everything.
- Bloodwine, on 04/20/2009, -1/+7Catholics don't tithe, at least not in the same sense as Protestants and their tithing of 10% of their income,
- MarkusX, on 04/20/2009, -1/+7Who would have thought that the pope becomes "cool", through the means of _science_ ???
- harrisbradley, on 04/20/2009, -0/+6...and don't forget the huge chunk of cash we pay that goes to the hungry and needy of the world. It's not like all out money goes to the solar panels, funny hats, and Pope-mobiles. We honestly do some good here and there.

- serif69, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5A Catholic on digg? I hope you're wearing your bulletproof rosary. It's brutal on here...
- MikeG4936, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5http://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org/NetCommunity/P ...
- gumballer, on 04/20/2009, -0/+5Cool, that's God.
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4The question is why don't YOU have 660 million dollars to buy solar panels??
- LordRedSnake, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4How's that for faith in action. If you believe in creationism, then you should be taking full advantage of that enormous nuclear reactor in the sky god built on the first day.
- marlonism, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4Another Catholic here. It's OK :-). My faith calls on me to rise above my human weakness and just continue to love other people regardless of their belief or lack of.
- chuckDontSurf, on 04/20/2009, -0/+4So a 17th-century Italian physicist walks into a bar...
- inactive, on 04/20/2009, -2/+6Love it. Europe is leading the solar power race.
- joe122370, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3you're not Catholic then, you're a cafeteria catholic, perhaps we could interest you in a protestant plate
- VengefulDigger, on 04/20/2009, -1/+4Yes, and it's nothing new.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Lema%C3%AEtre - serif69, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3AKA an A&P Catholic. Ashes & palms, nothing else.
- LordRedSnake, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Yes, a giant nuclear reactor with gravity as its catalyst. An awesome amount of free energy. We should be using it as an energy source just because of how freaking cool that concept is.
- seanayb, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2It's not so much brutal as bigotedly hiveminded.
So yeah, in retrospect, brutal. - geneikillua, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2If you're Catholic, then you must be a really dumb Catholic if you think the current Pope would label solar energy as Satanic.
- Radan, on 04/20/2009, -1/+3Yeah, we'll get right on it. The problem is that during those maximum three hours of sunlight we have here each day, we all crawl out of our highly broadband infused apartments to grasp as much sunlight as we possible can before going back into our dark LCD screen lit lairs.
Because of this, we don't that much work done. - Bloodwine, on 04/20/2009, -2/+4I'm more impressed with people who donate their money to charities that do not benefit themselves, but others.
I unfortunately live in the bible belt of the U.S., and live in one of the cities with the highest churches-per-capita in the nation. I can tell you that most of them operate like banks: they give little back, and spend most of the funds building monster-sized facilities for themselves.
The typical "give back to the community" type project of the churches I've seen is building a multi-purpose complex for the youth (aka gym that nobody ***** uses) - MJDub, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2http://www.epiconeliner.com
- pmoy, on 04/20/2009, -1/+3Catholic Church doesn't believe in creation in seven days. They view that part of Genesis as a story, written in a way that allowed for easy oral distribution as it is very repetitive and allows for easy memorization. Look to some protestant faiths to find that form of creationism.
- Hetman, on 04/20/2009, -1/+3It is still more expsensive to use solar energy than fossil fuels. But the divide seems to be getting smaller and smaller, so we should start seeing an increase in alternative energies, as oil becomes more expensive and the technology for other resources becomes cheaper to make.
- geneikillua, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2@anthropodeus: They don't say one part of the Bible is wrong. They say that the creation story is sort of a parable. Not all of the Bible is written as a history. There's poetry, songs, parables, etc.
- handheldchimp, on 04/20/2009, -1/+3And God said to thine holy solar panels...
- npdcrazypyro, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2According to Catholic teaching, the bible was written with divine inspiration. This means the writers were "inspired" by God to write what they did - which is not necessarily a factual history.
- proliance, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2I think you have the Catholic Church confused with the fundamentalists. Big difference.
- stix213, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2So, is the "Largest Solar Power Plan" just a regular set of plans but in size 36 font?
/s - proliance, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2The Vatican has been running a deficit for years. Their operating budget is $260 million, compared to say, Harvard, which has a budget of $1.3 billion, is pretty small.
The wealth of the Vatican is an urban legend created by Hollywood. - anthropodeus, on 04/20/2009, -0/+2petroleum, solar, hydro, wind, and biofuel all get their energy from the sun. there are only two sources of non-sun energy i can think of right now: geothermal and tidal.
- ohplease, on 04/20/2009, -5/+7Why don't they just hook up some jumper cables to a stack of bibles?
- Pixelante, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1That should be AC, not Microvac. All Microvac had to show was "insufficient data for meaningful answer".
- charlietuna, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1One piece of good news from Vatican City amidst an onslaught of bad.
- darkthomas, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1So you all think that if you disagree with the Pope then you're not Catholic? Going by that rationale, you're not an American if you don't agree with absolutely everything that Obama says and praise him as your infallible leader.
