Unusually Warm Weather Around The World
msnbc.msn.com — Much of the Midwest and the East Coast are going through a remarkably warm winter, with temperatures running 10 and 20 degrees higher than normal in many places.

- Misterm65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34I can't remember a time when it was this warm during the winter months. On the plus side I have gone steel heading this winter and not needed to wear a lot of extra clothing and my heating bills are down too. If you look at Colorado though they are just the opposite of what is going on lots of snow.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I've been in Canada for 13 years, and it never was that hot. The weatherman told us a few days ago it would be 15C today. :o
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Ivan
The western part of Canada? - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Province of Quebec. :)
- Steelfox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Exactly, its freakin almost 70 degrees here in NYC and its January. I asked some teachers and they told me it had to do with El Niño:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_nino - Drewboy64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's very warm in Ohio, I haven't seen a winter where we have gotten no snow in years (though plenty of rain). I mean it's 70 degrees right now which is quiet abnormal.
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm in Ottawa, Canada, and it hasn't been anywhere near as warm as it is this year since the ice storm in 1999, atleast stuff was frozen then, even if it was just ice.
- vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yeah. My gas bill is like $11 bucks and I was shocked. Usually it would be $50, $75, or $100 depending on who won the house hold fight over the thermostat.
I can't say I don't mind the weather because in PA it sucks to have to drive to work in the snow. Although I fear we are going to get nailed towards February with really cold weather.
Although the North West and Colorado are getting nailed pretty bad right now.
And although it is most likely the El Nino weather doing this, it has been shown that El Nino's are happening more frequently in the past decade or so. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's exactly why I'm headed to Colorado :) Let's see the snow.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Here in Toronto, Ontario things are quite strange as well... we haven't had ANY snow on the ground yet. It was 12 degrees celcius yesterday, and today it's 7 degrees. Last week I passed several trees and bushes that were budding as they would in the spring.
If we continue this way, we simply won't have a winter. I can't remember a time where there have been +10C temperatures and no snow well into January. The forecasters do say that within the next two weeks we'll be returning to seasonal averages, we'll have to see if that holds up. - pwill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm in Ohio, and yesterday, our ski club trip was canceled because there was absolutely no snow. It's freaking Janurary, and we can't go skiing.
I even wore shorts and a t-shirt to school on Wednesday. - gravity71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It feels almost like spring here in Rome, Italy. we have strawberries blooming in our garden. i think this says it all.
can be good for old people, but extremely worrying nonetheless. :( - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -28/+13El Nino is complete BS. They just don't want to accept the fact that global warming is real, and it's a problem.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_nino#History_of_the_phenomenon
"El Niño-Southern Oscillation conditions seem to have occurred at every two to seven years for at least the past 300 years, but most of them have been weak."
This year just happens to be a decent one, similar to the 1997-1998 one. Moreover, I'm sure that most of you who are freaking out are also the ones spreading fire and brimstone about how hurricanes will destroy America's coasts and how the warmth will spawn super-hurricanes, etc..., etc.... Of course, you neglect to take into account that the climate is more complicated than any of us can even possibly fathom and, in fact, this has been one of the lamest hurricane seasons EVER RECORDED.
Higher temperatures do not correlate to global warming anymore than the decrease in the number of pirates in the world correlates to global warming. The actual science is mind-bogglingly complicated and that's why there's still a debate.
@Renton: And unfortunately, it's because of people like you who are in charge of our country and media, who DO NOT UNDERSTAND the climate, that this debate has become so meaninglessly polarized. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its 70 degrees here in Massachusets, im in a short sleeve shirt and planing on going out and rollerbladeing.
- cherrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@Renton
Don't be foolish. I would be the last person to deny global climate change. It's been well documented and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. However, denying the existence of El Nino is just plain ignorant and is no better than climate change deniers. - crgnetworks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It has only snowed once where I am in Youngstown Ohio this winter. The ground is usually covered with snow right now for weeks at a time.
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I'm not denying the existence of el Nino, I know that it happens every few years, and that it makes the temperature increase in parts of America, but this is all over the world. I'm saying its a BS excuse.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Hey, if THIS is global warming, bring it on. Its January in New England and I'm wearing shorts! I'm actually thinking of going up to the beach in a bit.
- aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Apparently, some of us didn't read the article. This unusual warmth has nothing to do with global warming.
"Meteorologists say the warm spell is due to a combination of factors: El Nino, a cyclical warming trend now under way in the Pacific Ocean, can lead to milder weather, particularly in the Northeast; and the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that works like a barricade to hold back warm Southern air, is running much farther north than usual over the East Coast.
The weather is prone to short-term fluctuations, and forecasters said the mild winter does not necessarily mean global warming is upon us. In fact, the Plains have been hit by back-to-back blizzards in the past two weeks.
“No cause for alarm. Enjoy it while you have it,” said Mike Halpert, head of forecast operations at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center."
This winter is the odd ball out; if this was really due to global warming, last winter would have been just as hot. - meetthescott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23El Nino is spanish for... The Nino.
- cherrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Renton
You should probably read the article. Even though the submitter claims the warm weather is all over the world, the article says no such thing. It is a sensationalist eyecatcher that really should have gotten the submission buried. In fact, the article only makes claims to unusually warm weather in the Midwest and Eastern North America. So yes, this weather is just a once-off phenomenon. - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Winter's not over yet...lol
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last year during December the temperature slipped as low as -17°C here in Germany (usually around -10°), and it was already snowing in November. This year it's been mostly 4° to 8°C, and hasn't snowed yet!
Same in other parts of the world. I kinda feel sorry for these guys: http://www.thebostonsnowparty.com/ - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I recall one Christmas back in the 70's in Northern Michigan and took a picture of the outside thermometer, it was 68ºF outside. This kind of weather is nothing new. Interestingly enough, the following year we had record snowfall with 15 foot snow drift piled in front of our garage door. I'm enjoying the warmer weather right now, but I'm certain the Big Oil and Natural Gas companies are not enjoying their sudden shortfall in racking in the money from everyone trying to keep their homes warm.
- nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@masamunecyrus
"Higher temperatures do not correlate to global warming anymore than the decrease in the number of pirates in the world correlates to global warming."
Decrease in the number of pirates? At no time in history there have been more pirates on the oceans than today, and I'm not talking about software pirates. - GIFF3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I live in NH and I almost went jet skiing today on lake winnipesaukee! It's January 6th! To bad the jet ski wasn't registered. :(
- Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You find 15 degrees hot??? Wow... (Australian)
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IT'S NOT SNOWING IN CANADA! WAAAAAAAAA!!! ;_;
- dokbeast7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's pretty chilly over here in WA. We've been getting a lot of snow in the mountains lately too
- Twelvevolts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please send your winter weather down here to New Zealand - coldest summer I can remember. Sure doesn't feel like global warming to me.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You find 15 degrees hot??? Wow... (Australian)"
Well I'm guessing you mean Celcius, so that 59 in Farenheit.
I consider 59 mildly warm. I'll still wear long sleves, but I might put my car's windows down.
Anything 65-75 is warm, and is my favorite range.
80+ just gets too hot.
But 75 in a New England winter? What is this, a reverse Nor'Easter? - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in 2005 during the bad hurricane season down here by the florida keys on weekends we would go out and sit in the water by islamorada that was in the upper 90s!!!! it was so hot it would burn your feet. ocean water!
if its this warm now, by september this year it would not surprise me if near shore water boiled.
if that happens ill be taking pictures and video. - speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The inconvenient truth.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In upstate New York (which supposedly has the worst weather in the northeast) is seeing 60F - 70F days, foggy and rainy some of the time. It's odd, but similar to the 1997 El Nino, like mentioned before.
- billyh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not too far away from CO in the Eastern Sierra. We're crying for some snow. Very warm days last week up to 21C/60F+. We've had a bit of snow since, but the skiing joints are freakin'; "It will come, it will come," being their mantra. Hope so, I bought a ton of gear for it. Maybe I won't even need it. That's it, I'll short The North Face and REI stock!
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wrong topic, digg down
- Nocd2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5in north carolina we still have the summer produce in january
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been there, and it was quite warm, but not nearly as unseasonably warm as it is here in the midwest. We had more snow back in october than we've had all december and january.
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Probably from South America and Spain. It's warm, but there are no fruit or veggies growing in the US.
- concertina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No fruit or veggies anywhere in the US? Really? Because my farmer's market says otherwise. And we have only local produce at ours.
Many fruits and vegetables are winter crops.
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm in Maryland and I can't remember a winter like this, EVER. I've caught myself wearing shorts at least once a week with this weather and now that we don't have any, I miss the snow. :(
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why, I'm wearing shorts right now! Raining in Detroit, this is usually when we get a huge ice storm.
- mictlanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea, i'm in DC, usually we'll have one or two days like this in january, but this is absurd.
- EntropyFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I too am wearing shorts. It's 60. In Vermont. In January.
I think my snow shoes are mocking me from across the room... - Caleb83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm from Southern Maryland, it's like 70 here. I don't particularly mind, I prefer warm weather over cold.
- stinkypyper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I hate it. I am jonesing to go snowboarding.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I feel you. I bought a new helmet and I'd like to use it someday. :o
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I planned a snowmobiling trip a few months ago, and it's coming up in 2 weeks. It's been so warm that I scheduled it for the (historically) coldest week up there. Thankfully, there's a webcam set up in the area, and it shows snow now, but I was worried for a bit.
Other than that, I do enjoy the warm weather. Driving with the windows down in January is fun.
edit: Agh, I see from the thread right below this, it's 68 where I'm going to be snowmobiling.... - atlacatl, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2:)
Hm? Use your helmet, eh?
Here is an idea: get a video camera; put your helmet on; climb on top of the roof of your house; JUMP...Don't forget to film it. Better yet, have someone else film it and then post to youtube. Make sure you have some filming it...Likely you will break something and it will be hard for you to upload the video to youtube. And you don't want that...
This will bring much joy to a lot of people.
DISCLAIMER: jumping off roof tops may be hazardous for your health--even if you wear your shiny new helmet. BUT note that the fact that gravity pulls people down after they jump from rooftops, it hasn't stopped thousands of other morons who jump from them (without shining new helmets). So helmet is optional, but since there is no snow...I say use it... - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Helmets? We don't need no stinkin' helmets!
Unless you're on fake snow then yes, getting a concussion on that would suck.
- IQis87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Today its 68 in NH
- brandn487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's 70 in MA, that's unheard of
but this is New England I wouldn't be surprised if its freezing tomorrow
- brandn487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's 70 in MA, that's unheard of
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here in New Jersey it is 69 degrees.

- malliemcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's been a pretty damned cold summer here in the Australian Capital Territory this year :(
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am in Maine now. It is close to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Maine should be about 0 F this time of year. I like it because I can't stand cold weather, but this is somewhat ridiculous.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -38/+7i love this crazy warm weather with every part of my body, including my pee pee.
if this is kinda what global warming would be like-- bring it ON!- decipherd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19bring on global warming?
you moron. - ziki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14you don't miss the snow? I want snow!
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5You guys can have the snow, huge heating bills, and poor driving conditions. This warmer than normal winter is just fine by me. I don't ski, snowmobile, or snowboard, although I admit I would like to go ice fishing, but who wants to risk falling through.
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't stand the heat, and I'm always so relieved when winter comes by. But now I'm doubting if winter will come this year :(
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you like swamp ass?

And apparently Denver will be the place to live, since they are immune to the effects of Global WArming.
Also apparently, global warming began just 3 years ago since 1994 was teh COLEST winter in reocrdest history for much of hte country.- ziki, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6"The weather is prone to short-term fluctuations, and forecasters said the mild winter does not necessarily mean global warming is upon us. In fact, the Plains have been hit by back-to-back blizzards in the past two weeks."
RTFA - fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16ziki: would you please stop believing the exxon mobile propaganda?!
the hottest years in recorded history being within the last 10 years is not short term. - doctorrook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4actually i was just in Denver for about 2 weeks during the blizzards... its suprisingly warm during the days, melting the snow... the nights are bitter tho
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4ziki - In case you couldn't tell, he was being sarcastic and you are being a jerk.
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Global warming won't be this extreme, it'll just be parts of a degree at a time, so that the ice caps slowly melt and the ocean levels rise. Saying this is the fault of global warming is just plain wrong. Global warming isn't BS, but this isn't it.
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Learn English, retard.
- fearofcorners, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, global warming isn't a major overall temperature change, but a small change. It adds energy to the system, creating much more extreme but not necessarily much warmer weather.
So while this absolutely does not prove global warming, this kind of stuff does support it. - fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dark_helmet: well if its not warming.. at least its global..
- atlacatl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3fdemmer: "the hottest years in recorded history being within the last 10 years is not short term."
Actually, it kind of is. Of course if you are 20 years old, 10 years is half your life. So it feels it is not, but it is.
Put some context to the time frame and it will all make sense.
- ziki, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6"The weather is prone to short-term fluctuations, and forecasters said the mild winter does not necessarily mean global warming is upon us. In fact, the Plains have been hit by back-to-back blizzards in the past two weeks."
- wedges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6just so you know, i'm in boulder colorado. it's cold as *****, and we've had big snow dumps once a week for the past month, and it's 25 degrees at midday.
- ziki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wanna trade houses for the winter? I'm in NJ
- achew22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Two genuine blizzards in the past 2 weeks and 8 inches yesterday. I wish we were getting 60/70 degree days!

Good to know we are finding the top experts on global warming...- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Doorman, meteorologist, what's the difference? ;)
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Philly, only 100 miles south, and we barely had a winter last year.
- thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your doorman makes a lot more sense than mine. Today he just muttered something about french cognac. Of course, our doorman is also completely crazy.
- Kido1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its 78 right now in Orlando. Its been ~80 all over Florida since New Year's Eve. It's freakin ridiculous. Where's my winter?
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14heh, you want winter in Florida?
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You live at disney world, you don't have a winter.
- BenjaminReece23, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5A lot of people are going around saying this is all due to global warming. While that is a serious issue, this warm winter is due to it being a moderate El Niño year and is NOT because of global warming. The media has been trying to re-spark the global warming story but it's all a load of crap.
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8no, it has been like this in sweden too, my friend just got back from there, and I'm pretty sure that they dont' have el niño in sweden.
- fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5maybe el nino is somewhat connected to increasing atmospheric and ocean temperatures, ha?
also as fitchmicah pointed out: europe has no el nino and its 10-15°C here. - fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw, part of the reason that it gets cold in the winter is because when the snow covers the ground, the ground absorbs less energy from the sun. more of the sun's energy is bounced off of the snow, and it isn't as warm. it's been said around here that warmer climates will give minnesota more snow, but far less will stick.
- tooasianguys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"For those of you who don't habla espanol, El Nino is Spanish for..'The Nino' " - Chris Farley SNL skit

Its almost as if Earth's climate goes in cycles. - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@aliengoods
There are thing called "warm fronts," which are streams of air that move from the south, where the weather is normally hot that time of year, to the north. This makes the north warmer, and it usually lasts for a few days or a week.
What is happening right now has been going on for months. - thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uhm, I think he was actually pointing out that we just broke the record here in nyc. Let's not jump down everyone's throats, shall we? I don't understand how, in a group of generally non-expert people, so many opinions can be uttered with total self assurance. I highly doubt the majority of commentators on this story are climatologists. In fact, I'd be shocked if there was a single one. So let's just ease up on the anger.
- ssam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the global cooling in the 1970s is interesting, have read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling and ttp://environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/mg19225822.300-histories-the-ice-age-that-never-was.html (if you are an NS subscriber or have an acedemic pass)
it in no way disproves the current observation of global warming which is in part caused by human activity.
PS: its also been very warm in the UK http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2007/pr20070104.html
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2So what you're saying is there was a period of global warming in the late 40's and early 50's? Then things cooled down in the 70's when all of the 'expert' scientists were predicting massive global cooling. Now its warming up again.
- hobbitaussie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Warm weather in the mid-west? What about the 30 degree F weather in LA and 3 major blizzards in Colorado? Not saying its not unusually warm everywhere, but that this article seems to be ignoring a few things. Here in Texas its colder than it has been in a while.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That isn't the midwest:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_United_States
The Midwestern United States (or Midwest) refers to the north-central states of the United States of America, specifically Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota.
Neither California nor Colorado, nor Texas make that list.
Indiana, where I am, however, does. - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, isn't as warm as hell here? I'm right by Indianapolis so I don't get the lake effect snow like they do up in Valpo but even they haven't gotten dumped on much this year.
- drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hobbitaussie
I dunno what part of Texas you're in, but here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area it's a tad warm. Not much warmer than usual, just more mild.
Last year we had record snow falls all over the state. (Parts physically capable of receiving snow)
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That isn't the midwest:
- adminsr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Sorry to burst your alarmist bubble, but an avalanche just buried several cars 60 miles west of Denver.
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4you're very uninformed to think that more snow is the same as the temperature getting colder. I wouldn't be surprised if much of the snow in colorado was due to slightly WARMER temperatures.
- lucaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I live in denver, it was very cold last night... It is cold too, not just more snow. this is not part of some larger trend, just irregular weather patterns for the year. The weatherpeople have made a note of this fact.
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh there was an avalanche? OK, I guess we're all imagining the higher temps.
The avalanche proves that there is no global warming. - fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@lucaq
here in minnesota we are aware that more snow causes colder temperatures due to the ability that snow has to reflect the sun's radiation. was the weather pretty warm before the snow came?
- KLB123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They opened the golf courses here in London Ontario a few days ago as well. I don't recall the golf courses opening in January ever in my life time
- Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well same thing in eastern Europe.
It should be -20 and people should be freezing to death just by thinking of going inside.
Instead its raining a bit and i am finding my room a bit too hot. We had NO snow during Christmas. WTF!- Poltras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same in Quebec City. It's raining right now in Montreal and will be raining for 2 days. No snow during Xmas in both cities, although Quebec was cold enough to have 15cm of snow before new year's eve, though it melted since then :( And yes, for you all, I don't ski but I miss the snow. It's like a big long october and it's depressing. Plays on morale a lot.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8Waiting for the Al Gore wackos to come in with their global warming *****...
It is 42 here today, about 20 degrees above average. I'm not complaining.
People bitch no matter about the weather. Too warm, they can't snowboard and ski. Too cold, they can't play naked volleyball.- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Pretending it's not happening won't make it go away.
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You might be right, papsmear.
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Waiting for the Al Gore wackos to come in with their global warming *****...

Good job contradicting yourself.
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I didn't see a lot of snow in mpls till new years, when we got 2 inches haha
no really, this is real and people denying it have got to be kidding me.
we can't even go ice skating in Minnesota in JANUARY!- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5why are you digging me down? I'm mad about the situation. I cannot remember a january before I was 15 where we weren't able to stand on the lakes in january, but the last 4 years have brought this situation repeatedly.
- paladin144, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@fitchmicah
I live in Minnesota, too, and this year has been absolutely insane. I don't know if other people can really understand how COLD a Minnesota winter usually is. I remember freezing my ass of for most of my childhood. Whenever we'd go over to my uncles at X-mas time we'd be out skating on the lake, driving snowmobiles around the lake and such. This year we couldn't even set one foot on the lake because there was a huge hole of open water in the middle. This is NOT NORMAL!! I don't care what people say; global warming is real and it's happening. Today it's 40 degrees in MN. Normally it would be about 10. or zero. Or waaaay the ***** below zero. What the hell is going on here? I've been writing a few blog entries about it: http://weblog.timoregan.com/2006/12/solstice-winter-in-minnesota.html
It is very worrying, but on the other hand, I really hate the cold. I'm about to go outside and I think I could get used to this 40 degree *****.... :-)
- Onwlyix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's like 65F in georgia, we're usually around 30F this time of year. Maybe we'll get an early start on summer and the pool will open early.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I don't care what the global warming gloom and doomers say, this weather is nice. On the other side, while big cities have been getting hotter during the summer, where I'm at it's been slightly cooler. Of course the big cities are where the concrete and factories are, so that contributes to their heat. I can't speak for certain for the entire more sparsely populated areas of the Earth, lest I fall into the trap of thinking that all areas are the same as mine. However, academicians do mostly live in big cities and aren't entirely immune to thinking that the whole world is like their patch either.
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+465 degrees here in vermont, never seen weather this warm in january
- wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I miss the snow days off from work when the Federal Government closes. It only takes about 3" of snow to to get a day off in Washington, D.C.
- Funky_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's around +10C in Montreal, Quebec today.
Normally at this time of year it's -20C. - Dugon143, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2the earth heats up and cools down...hence the ice age and unusually hot winter...we just don't know if its heating up or cooling down, but dammit i want SNOW!
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It's an El Nino year. Winter is supposed to be unusually warmer.
- fitchmicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you should read the comment below to see that these temperatures are not just american.
- unruled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8its the 6th of january, and its 12C in the Netherlands. Its been like this all automn and winter so far.
We have only had 1 day of frost so far. Normally that would be over 2 months of frost.
take a look at this article from a few weeks ago:
http://www.playfuls.com/news_003568_Warm_Fall_Temps_Bring_Winter_Blooms.html
flowers BLOOMING in december in the netherlands. October was a record month (warmest in 200 years), November was the warmest ever recorded, and so was december.... - hyperstation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm wearing shorts in western Massachusetts. Crazy.
- scoot2006, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10But the oil companies said global warming isn't happening! /sarcasm
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The wife and I were just talking about this over lunch today and behold its on the digg home page.
We live in DC area and its 71degress on Jan 6th.
Thats seems pretty weird. We're literally wearing shorts in the middle of winter in DC.
Al Gore was right. - TrancePhreak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm in Washington near Seattle and it's fricken cold. Don't try to put your bias on me.
- mabba18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4North-Eastern North America &ne The World
- Poltras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Rest of the world also sees the same problems. Try to make some friends outside of USA, and ask them. Apple trees are flowering in France, Algeria is having snow....
- mabba18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe, but its not mentioned in this article.
- niceyuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in England and its the warmest its ever been in January in my living memory (33 years). Usually it would be cold and icy/snowy this time of year but its raining at the moment and I dont even need the heating on.
- IchiroBoston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It looks more like El-Nino... since other areas are cooler than normal. Its hard to say if its due to "global warming" since we really don't know the true historical cycle of the earth.
But I'll take it :) it's almost 70F here in Boston, MA.... I wish it would stick around but I know winter is coming back... and if anything winter is going to stick around :(....
Maybe the Northeast will have nice weather all around and the West will stay cold.... muwwwaaahahahahah ;)- DiZASTiX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup, its 69F in boston right now. Crazy, I have my windows open! Really feels like spring right now, I wouldn't mind some snow though, kinda missing that new england winter :p
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Boston was gorgeous today.
Too bad I had to ***** work at Bertucci's all damn day. Where were you guys? The city was crazy and practically no one came in. I blame you two personally unless of course you were one of my tables and tipped me well.
In that case, sorry.
- Jest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5El Niño MAY have been caused by global warming - according to that movie An Inconvenient Truth. The film contested that global warming is increasing the intensity of hurricanes and causing erratic weather conditions worldwide.
- nfollmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It all comes down to global warming, El Nino effects are stronger because of it. Its all those people with their damn SUV's!
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm in Chicago and it's so warm here that Rex Grossman sucks ass.
- MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Now will you pay attention to global warming???
btw its 81 F in daytona beach, fl today :) - thoth92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1There's also some global cooling. While it may be 68 degrees in NYC now, I was in Paris two weeks ago and it was literally freezing, which is very cold for Paris, even in the winter.
- unruled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find that hard to believe, since the current temperatures are 12C (taken from weather.com).
I have a friend in Marseille (south of paris) who mentioned its been above 10C there all automn/winter too. - yhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually no, Paris as all Europe are several Cº above average. Get your facts right.
So no, your global cooling isn't happening, there's climate change. The climate change that is happening now and here is for the worm side. The additional energy in the atmosphere causes more severe manifestations of extreme weather and the average temps are rising.
Now if someone says that this is a natural cycle please shoot yourself in the foot. This could only be a natural cycle if you believe the world is 6000 years old. At the pace climate is changing, saying that implies that your calcs are wrong by several orders of magnitude.
- unruled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find that hard to believe, since the current temperatures are 12C (taken from weather.com).
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No Snow in Detroit Winter, WTF. Global Warming sucks ass.
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3arg, I want to hit the slopes!!! I hate you Al Gore and your freakin' global warming!
- canadaboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The Digg title is misleading related to the article that talks about the US. Dugg down.
- canadaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apparently I'm being dugg down because for a lot of people "the world" only = the US.
Alas, such sadness.
- canadaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apparently I'm being dugg down because for a lot of people "the world" only = the US.
- DarkDakota, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In London Ontario Canada,
It's snowing outside
you may look and tell me it's raining
but i know where i am
it's just warm snow.
I'm going out to shovel my walk
it's the only time i get away from this harpy***
*** Harpy
Harpies (snatchers)
Though Hesiod (Theogony) calls them two "lovely-haired" creatures, Harpies as beautiful winged bird-women are a late development, in parallel with the transformation of the "Siren, a creature malign though seductive in Homer, but gradually softened by the Athenian imagination into a sorrowful death angel" (Harrison p 177).. On a vase in the Berlin Museum (Harrison, fig 19), a harpy has a small figure of a hero in each claw, but her head is recognizably a Gorgon, with goggling eyes, protruding tongue and fangs.

- Redemption289, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trust me, we here in Colorado have had about as much snow as we can take. Two storms (each with over a foot of snow, one with over two feet) in one week, and a third minor one just passed through yesterday. Come and take it because we don't want it... jeez
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(edit)
- awipf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, anyone who has not believed in Global Warming should have gotten a wake up call now.
http://www.clubofpioneers.com/blog/alexs-blog/2/stories/38/- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Earth AND Mars are both getting warmer! Google it before you digg me down.
I don't think many reasonable people deny that the planet is getting warmer, they don't believe human activity is the cause.
The Earth (and possibly the solar system) have a natural temperature cycle. We certainly didn't have anything to do with the end of the last Ice Age.
I think people want to believe that Global Warming is caused by humans because then we can reverse it.
It's FAR more worrying if there is NOTHING we can do about it. But THAT inconvenient truth won't get anyone elected... - manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well said davecore. Politicians have to appeal to all of these "Green-loving" voters who complain about global warming while drinking out of their Styrofoam cups and taking hour long showers.
- yhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1davecor, you are brutally wrong.
If you think the changes in climate you are experiencing during your life time are part of a natural cycle you definitely haven't taken a second to do some basic math. Natural cycles exist, but your lifetime is extremely close to irrelevant.
All, yes, i'll say all scientists (because I don't consider dumb self proclaimed climate experts payed by some corporate lobby or bush like administrations to be real scientists) agree that current climate change is way off a natural cycle and IS caused by human activity.
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Earth AND Mars are both getting warmer! Google it before you digg me down.
- blubloblu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3why does the title say 'around the world' when the article is clearly just about the USA?
- canadaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2agreed.
- xSEED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0global warming, humans.
it was warmer than usual in cali at first. now it's normal.
to all you dudes saying it's too warm. OH NOOOOOO!!!!!! it's over for ya'll!!! - PoVRAZOR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We're all gonna die!!!!
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, we are in fact all going to die. I thought everyone knew that by the time they were old enough to know anything at all.
