ecogeek.org — Depending on how you drive, the Chevy Volt won't use a drop of gas if your daily driving is under 40 miles. It's only after 40 miles that the gas engine takes over. The average U.S. commute is 43.5 miles meaning most people will only be driving 3.5 miles on gas. Oh ya, and it may be the first hot looking eco/wallet friendly vehicle.

      According to the article, the purpose of the gasoline engine is as a generator to recharge the batteries. The only engine that drives the car is the electric engine.
