- zzzBrett, on 04/24/2009, -2/+26I guess its gotta be done some time.
- slvrbullet87, on 04/24/2009, -2/+21Seems like a good use of government money. High paying temp jobs for people. Work that needs to be done, and doesnt cut out the private sector as there isnt a much of a private sector in nuclear cleanup
Note: I am against most of the stimulus bill - BigManOnCampus, on 04/24/2009, -5/+19Money well spent. The cold war is over, we no longer need those facilities, and they need to be cleaned up.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -2/+16"the good thing about nuclear waste is that it has a tendency to clean itself over time"
If by 'time' you mean 'hundreds of thousands of years' then, yes. - Mockylock, on 04/24/2009, -1/+13I work for the management group for quite a few of these sites. 6 Billion isn't a whole lot, considering how many sites there are and how much it costs to do all of this at a single site. 6 billion was spent on the Fernald preserve alone http://www.lm.doe.gov/land/sites/oh/fernald_orig/i ... just to get it turned into a preserve. Keep in mind, any single site didn't make a nuclear weapon. The government split up production of different parts and research throughout the US during the Manhattan project to avoid the takedown of any major production in case of a cold-war attack. Not all sites were nuclear, but a large number are. The government gave money toward this and the EPA Superfund also gives a significant amount toward the cause (http://www.epa.gov/superfund/).
Most of this money was already asked for before the presidency, but had to wait until the fiscal year for approval. I'm surprised that 6 Billion was the number that was agreed on, considering it costs such a large amount for each site. Cleanup sites have already been worked on since the 90's, and recent clean-ups include Rocky Flats, Colorado; Grand Junction, Colorado; Tuba City, Arizona; Weldon Spring, Missouri; Mound, Ohio; Fernald, Ohio; Oak Ridge, TN and more.
Again, I recommend people reading about this and how much time and effort is to make these sights far above compliance to make sure wildlife can inhabit them again. 6 Billion seems like a ton, but considering it could take a billion a year for each site (multiple years), it can make one think. It's cool to see the money's going to something aside from banks who are just holding on to it and doing nothing but insuring their pensions. - drallo, on 04/24/2009, -1/+8Are you ***** retarded or something?
- solidsnake1298, on 04/24/2009, -3/+10It gives people jobs. Most of the work will be done by private companies.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -5/+12What a waste we never even got to use them!
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+7Guess some people don't have a sense of humor.
- Mockylock, on 04/24/2009, -1/+6Where the ***** do you get this info? Just have a stick up your ass? The EPA and others overlook all of this and you wouldn't imagine the amount of work and measurements that are put in place to make each site clean. I work for the department that's in charge of this, and measurements have to be taken on a 24 hour basis and reported in to the department of energy to comply with all standards to make these places back in to preserves. Not to mention, even if there aren't ANY traces of contamination and someone points out that there's a possible piece of the building or equpment that wasn't accounted for, it all has to be dug up just to check. It costs billions of dollars just to dig it back up, even after it's been done.. not to mention millions of man hours.
So shut your ***** mouth, unless you have facts and know what you're talking about. They're spending money to fix problems that others left behind, for future generations. Not to mention, they're putting themselves at risk to do so. Besides, what the hell is there to cover up? It's all public information now, anyone has rights to information on all of these sites now that new laws are passed.
Go see Fernald Preserve or Weldon Spring reserve. - ZenMojo, on 04/24/2009, -0/+5Yes. Yes he is.
- ZenMojo, on 04/24/2009, -0/+4They can have thirty if I get my name on a plaque.
- cybrguy, on 04/24/2009, -0/+4True, but its better use of money than some. Better than bank bailouts or home loan bailouts. Both of which are creating massive moral hazard.
- Psara, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3Even if it was a waste of money, it's six million dollars being paid out to you and me.
But yes, if you want to fight a dramatic drop in the economy by stopping all remaining spending, let me know how that works out for you. I'll take the government crated jobs; economic stimulation; and cleaner planet, and you can live in a pile of toxic waste with a big sign that says "Government Money No Good Here." - BigManOnCampus, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3It depends on the nuclear waste. Some nuclear waste is safe within a hundred years or so.
- Dustyb, on 04/24/2009, -0/+3Now is a very good time for that to happen, this will create new jobs and stimulate the economy. If my math is right it should put something like $60B into the economy.
- jugheadjones, on 04/24/2009, -1/+4Throw them warheads in the burn barrel.
- Sniper, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2Don't kid yourself, you'll never be able to afford it.
- kemp34, on 04/24/2009, -1/+3Stop commenting and get back to filling in the ditch I dugg this morning!!
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+3They can have $50 if I get my name on a warhead.
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/24/2009, -2/+4the point of having them is to scare others so we never have to use them. they did their job very well
- dblespresso, on 04/24/2009, -1/+3There existence was there usage
- evisr8r, on 04/24/2009, -2/+4Jobs, and if you say "eh, cleanup jobs are temporary" you're a correct but it's jobs right now, which matter quite a bit.
- ZenMojo, on 04/24/2009, -0/+2In case you haven't noticed, Obama didn't create those environmentally ***** nuclear sites in the first place. He's cleaning up after some other douchebag.
- randomface, on 04/24/2009, -1/+2I would say that people entering a radiation contaminated site for cleanup are fighting an enemy the same as a soldier. Soldiers are paid to fight people, people cleaning up radioactive military sites are fighting pollution/radiation.
- shallot, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1Get an education fatex.....dumbass...
- frieddonuts, on 04/26/2009, -0/+1I read that some forms of nuclear waste are so slow to decay that they would be our most lasting legacy, if we magically disappeared today.
- bjornski, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1@Frixionburne
Nah, then it starts to turn into this...
http://sabbah.biz/mt/archives/2006/07/17/photo-of- ... - gtrob, on 04/26/2009, -0/+0Yeah, ***** the homeowners, and their families, and the backbone of the credit system that fuels the global economy.
- gtrob, on 04/26/2009, -0/+0And if by "nuclear waste" you mean "the tiny portion of spent nuclear fuel which has half-lives that long and, are, as a result not really hazardous because they are decaying so slowly", then, yes.
- inactive, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1What's a little radiation in the way of progress?
- sanibelsnook, on 04/24/2009, -4/+4just not now as we DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- TwilightMadness, on 04/26/2009, -0/+0I agree, doing this now will put people back to work, money into the economy and cleans up a dangerous mess that people have been trying to ignore for years in one go.
Everyone wins; the environmentalists, business, workers and the government. - cybrguy, on 04/24/2009, -2/+2Jobs like this help in the short term but do nothing in the long term. We need manufacturing jobs, not service jobs. Of course there is a slight mix of non-service jobs in this money, but LONG term manufacturing is where the focus should be IF there is a bailout.
- gtrob, on 04/26/2009, -0/+0By math it will create 50 megatrazillion, maybe you had a rounding error.
- Trick07, on 04/24/2009, -1/+1For starters, prevailing wages for those who are lucky enough to get the job. The local community as the money earned will be spent in the local community...
Then there are the hospitals and doctors, who will be paid to treat the true "greenies" who will come to them, glowing ever so bright.
Then there are the lawyers, they will reap big class-action lawsuit payouts when the "greenies" sue.
Don't forget about the fake "greenies" at the Sierra Club. They will be be bribed with cash and the planting of tree's in their mountain side mansions...
Did I leave anyone out? - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -1/+1Well we aren't quite at the black helicopter phase yet, so we need to find other ways to print money and distribute it to the people.
- RonPauls, on 04/24/2009, -2/+2everyone in the soviet union had a job
jobs dont matter, production does - kemp34, on 04/24/2009, -2/+2Everybody to work digging ditches!!
And you, over there, start filling in the ditches!!
FULL EMPLOYMENT - bobcat7407, on 04/24/2009, -4/+4Who's gonna do that? Democrats? That is some serious day-dreaming.
- RonPauls, on 04/24/2009, -2/+2we'll just make a bigger deficit and print some more money
money comes from trees - cybrguy, on 04/24/2009, -2/+1They aren't recycling weapons, just facilities. And in reality, all the projects are already underway, they are just throwing more money at already way overbudget projects. The money will do some good, but will also be inefficiently spent.
- sanibelsnook, on 04/24/2009, -8/+7no wasteful spending there .. not like it can't wait until we can AFFORD it ...
run them printing presses!!! make my dollar worth even less for years to come.. - inactive, on 04/24/2009, -3/+2Isn't that the same theory as trickle down economics, let the businessman keep more of his money he will hire more people, well give the business free tax money and they hire, its the same damn principle.
- shallot, on 04/24/2009, -2/+1junkhead...get an education...
this work can't be outsourced...apply for this if you have lost a job or never had one... - manosinistra, on 04/24/2009, -3/+1Government seems to be the biggest dream of them all...
- Hollow5, on 04/24/2009, -4/+2can you hear the echo?
- JAGUART, on 04/24/2009, -3/+1Two Words: Lead Underwear.
- Talphin, on 04/24/2009, -5/+1Holy *****. I add a /s on my comments, and I get flamed for adding an /s on my comments.
I leave it off, and I get retards like you who don't know how to take a joke. Lighten up ***** face. -
