You would of thought that they'd be more energy efficient but then I suppose the buildings would cost more and the governemnt doesn't like spending money on long term solutions.
- digghasnoethics, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Get a trendy architect, obsess about the 'statement' the building makes, squash as many people as possible into the space - and then insist that the cheapest bid wins.
Is it a surprise that new buildings are so bad?
The focus is on a touch of greenwashing, not on actually prioritising energy usage or ensuring that its carried through. To do that you set a minimum standard that you gradually revise upward AND you state that any new building that doesn't deliver that minimum standard in operation gets shut down till it does. Fines for certificates is pointless and just red tape. - DigitAl56K, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3That'll only release more CO2!

- onClipEvent, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3There's plenty of greenwashing when it comes to new buildings. Even LEED certification does not mean much without knowing how everything is measured.
"...measures taken to make a building LEED-certified vary widely - one point is awarded for installing bicycle racks outside a building just as one point is awarded for installing a more expensive and complex water system that collects and reuses storm water for toilets and urinals - some critics say the system allows developers to reap the public relations benefits of constructing a "green" building too easily."

there are other articles from NPR also pointing out the problems with LEED and other 'green certifications'. - screwy3333, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3Anyone supporting a mainframe with even a modest Linux system should be worried
- warsongs7, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Short-term solutions = higher proportion of population fooled = more votes.

- DarkSpan, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2I'm sure the new buildings are no good as the walls seem to be paper thin. I one lived in a weavers cottage where the walls were a couple of feet deep and that place was snug.
- tbredofsin, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Caught that, did you?
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1Makes for good coffee,,,
- Ramble, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1I'm curious as to what my building would be. All lights around here are fluorescent tubes, corridors have movement sensors and the heating on only on in the winter, and only heats to 17C.
- bluesman3535, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Gotta love the UK, disintegrating but preoccupied with gas, not their absurd government. 'Keeping Up (carbon) Appearances" at #10 Arab St .

- LingNoi, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1Wow that's ***** retarded.. What's next a fart tax?! Oh wait! I already read about that on digg. Please kill me.
- partrow, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1What is a "CO2 offender", and what is offensive about emitting CO2? We all emit CO2 when we breathe, and I guess this is bad? But the plants like it, because they need it to take it in for photosynthesis. But, if you say it is bad, I guess it is bad. I never realized I was being bad when I breathe.
- notadiggtard, on 10/05/2008, -3/+1Buried for the concept of "CO2 offender"
- nonsequitur668, on 10/05/2008, -3/+0Who cares about what happens in third-world countries like the UK and France?
