Turkish Natural Wonder - Made Completely of Marble!
funnymovies.net — 'Pamukkale' is apparently one of the most popular natural wonders of Turkey. Made completely of marble, people go there to bathe and just generally chill out (I suppose). Very cool. Although if that many people were bathing there I would probably just check it out without going in the water.

- bubbles4u, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Wow that is neat! I can't believe that people actually bathe in it!
- petroK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15That is really cool, and very intriguing from a geological perspective...
of course the little geologist in me points to the common misnomer "travertine (or travertino) marble (or limestone)." Travertine is actually not "marble" per se... though in construction/art/furnishing any crystalline calcitic rock is sometimes called "marble," travertine is a calcite evaporite...a sedimentary rock, not marble, which is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of the same mineral.
that is to say...PRETTY ROCKS. - sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9That makes me really want to go to Turkey.
- ReubADoob, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Been there done it. It was pretty cool.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12while you're in turkey, you can also stay in a 5th century hotel carved into the side of a mountain
http://www.yunak.com/cappadocia_photo_gallery.html- rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been there too! I'd recommend it as well. Especially for the abandoned village on the outskirts of town. I happened to be there in the off-season so I had the run of the place.

sigh, emailing myself another link to check when I get home.....- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why email? digg it, go home, read it... if it sucks, undigg it :)
- Keitosha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I've been there 2 times already (in 2003 and 2004), but someone told me that it's now closed for tourists due to the polution. The ecosystem is badly damaged there and it's not white anymore, but more bronish. The pictures are pretty, but most of them (also in the books) are from the 70's. :)
I'm going to Turkey again this saturday, but i think that Pamukkale isn't an option. A good friend also went to Turkey a few weeks ago and he confirmed that it was closed for the public. :( - doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This looks like Mammoth Hot Springs at Yellowstone, but not so hot.
- notice I didn't say it's cooler, just not so hot.... - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not one of a kind. do a google search for mammoth hot springs in yellowstone.
EXACT SAME THING
im sure it occurs other places as well
spectacular nonetheless - donloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Can't help thinking that it looks dangerous. Slippery rock, 20 foot fall onto more hard, wet rock. Looks like a good way to crack your head open.
- Blueshrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice looking place, but the picture blurbs sound like ads from a tourism agency.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was there in 2002 and it was already forbidden to bath in those pools. The pictures with people all over the place are old.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They don't let you carve your name inside the Pyramids of Egypt either like they used to. What a bummer!

- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you! I could not get to the pictures in the main linked article...
- briguymaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll be there in two weeks. I'll take pictures.
- FlapJaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's awesome.. it looks like snow.
The girl laying down in the second picture has a nice ass. - eddypcj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure if this has been mentioned above, but this is NOT a natural formation. The spring water that feeds the pools IS natural, but the pools themselves were cast in place. As the water from the aforementioned spring (which has a high mineral content) passes over these formations the pools are formed.
I have been there, Pamukkale place is very disappointing.
Now Cappadochia is a whole other story, a truly amazing place. :) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Between the word "Pamukkale" and the mountains covered in white, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought "bukkake"
- cosmicr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3haha no handrails. if this were in the western world there'd be lawsuits all over the place.
- imdeanlabouty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, that was "Calypso's island" in that crappy TV movie based on The Odyssey.
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy *****! my wife had just sent a powerpoint presentation to me of this 3 days ago, and I had been investigating a possible vacation there in the near future! SPOOKY
- vezquex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I saw this on PBS a looooooooong time ago. Travels in Europe.

- RFInfection, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love it.
- screetchycello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those pictures are really old - the pools are all dry now. The water level up there was damaged by hotel building on the cliffs years ago and has never recovered - there's one tiny stream running down the cliff. But no big pools of water covering the cliff, sorry. We visited in May of this year.
However, it's still really really pretty out there. I loved Turkey, it was an awesome country to visit. Even if my mother freaked out and thought I'd have to wear a veil. It's not Saudi Arabia, mom! - Llan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I read "made complete of marvel". Although that'd be appropriate for a wonder :)
- jethro10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a few times. It's true people were damaging this spectacle. In recent years people have had only limited access to the pools and the polution has all but gone and the pools are now crystal clear and fluffy white again. The hotels have been dismantled by the government.
Now its a really nice place again.
The source of the water at the top of the hill is a most amazing place to go for a swim. - m0tbaillie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, you can't bathe there anymore. Back in the 70's and 80's people used to do it all the time, and eventually nasty black rings formed around the white marbel.
- ekslibris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes these are old photos of Pamukkale maybe from the 90's. Here is the new photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/zelyot/112397162/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/zelyot/112396131/
It is in UNESCO's world heritage list. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/485
You can also swim in old Roman bath house pool.
When you come here you will also visit Hirapolis (ancient roman city established in 2'Th century A.D.) and the Karahayit. (Small village with therapeutic red water)
I am living in Denizli City which is in South west and 20 km far from Pamukkale. - jnothing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.flickr.com/photos/zeyneparkok/123439973/
- timada, 3 minutes ago, -0/+0I've been there couple of year ago in a short 'tatili' http://www.bamtur.com/ (vacation) and i have to admit that it' an awesome place. I checked the water a well --- it' very cold but usually clean and clear. I loved it!
