- Nemoso, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6"George Carlin's "The Planet Is Fine"
We're so self-important. So self-important. Everybody's going to save something now. "Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails." And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these ***** people kidding me? Save the planet, we don't even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven't learned how to care for one another, we're gonna save the ***** planet?
I'm getting tired of that *****. Tired of that *****. I'm tired of ***** Earth Day, I'm tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren't enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world save for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don't give a ***** about the planet. They don't care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don't. Not in the abstract they don't. You know what they're interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They're worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn't impress me.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are *****. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We've been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we've only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we're a threat? That somehow we're gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that's just a-floatin' around the sun?
The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles...hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages...And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet...the planet...the planet isn't going anywhere. WE ARE!
We're going away. Pack your *****, folks. We're going away. And we won't leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet'll be here and we'll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance.
You wanna know how the planet's doing? Ask those people at Pompeii, who are frozen into position from volcanic ash, how the planet's doing. You wanna know if the planet's all right, ask those people in Mexico City or Armenia or a hundred other places buried under thousands of tons of earthquake rubble, if they feel like a threat to the planet this week. Or how about those people in Kilowaia, Hawaii, who built their homes right next to an active volcano, and then wonder why they have lava in the living room.
The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we're gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, 'cause that's what it does. It's a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it's true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn't share our prejudice towards plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn't know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, "Why are we here?" Plastic...*****.
So, the plastic is here, our job is done, we can be phased out now. And I think that's begun. Don't you think that's already started? I think, to be fair, the planet sees us as a mild threat. Something to be dealt with. And the planet can defend itself in an organized, collective way, the way a beehive or an ant colony can. A collective defense mechanism. The planet will think of something. What would you do if you were the planet? How would you defend yourself against this troublesome, pesky species? Let's see... Viruses. Viruses might be good. They seem vulnerable to viruses. And, uh...viruses are tricky, always mutating and forming new strains whenever a vaccine is developed. Perhaps, this first virus could be one that compromises the immune system of these creatures. Perhaps a human immunodeficiency virus, making them vulnerable to all sorts of other diseases and infections that might come along. And maybe it could be spread sexually, making them a little reluctant to engage in the act of reproduction.
Well, that's a poetic note. And it's a start. And I can dream, can't I? See I don't worry about the little things: bees, trees, whales, snails. I think we're part of a greater wisdom than we will ever understand. A higher order. Call it what you want. Know what I call it? The Big Electron. The Big Electron...whoooa. Whoooa. Whoooa. It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge at all. It just is. And so are we. For a little while."
The gist: The Earth has gone through a lot worse than styrofoam cups and kitty litter. Cut this pretentious green ***** out and stop trying to save something that has been around for billions of years before us and what will continue to live billions of years after us. Humanity is in danger, not the Earth. - CatsAreGods, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6My cats would look stupid if they were green! I prefer the traditional cat colors.
- AlwaysAwake, on 06/17/2008, -3/+7Man's inhumanity to man, is reflected in our indifference, insensitivity, and abuse of animals. Not a pretty mirror to look upon.
- MichelleC1036, on 06/17/2008, -2/+6Opt to adopt!
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5"Pet breeders have only one goal in mind—to raise large quantities of purebred animals for profit."
***** you. I raise belgian shepherds. I don't sell them to people who live in appartments and I'm an actual breeder, I select my reproductive dogs for their behaviour and general physical condition to improve the breed. I breed guard/police dogs which I usually sell to the military and police and I breed domestic dogs that will become family pets. It's not about quantity, it's about quality. It's a hobby for most of us, not a business.
There's a difference between a breeder and a pet farm, especially dog farms. Those are awful places that diminish the breed. The dogs are kept in cages, most of the time on top of another and they ***** and piss on each other and they never receive any type of medical care. The dogs aren't selected by anything other than breed, as long as they sort of look like a pure breed, they reproduce.
Pet shops are the ones who buy from pet farms. Dogs in pet shops were bred in terrible conditions and nobody should buy them. And "pure bred" says absolutely nothing about pedigree. They'll have two dogs with hip dysplasia or anything reproduce. That's why the "pure breeds" have so much genetic defects these day.
"love knows no pedigree"
Yeah, but having to euthanize your dog after two years because he's paralyzed and you can't afford a 6 grand surgery will break your heart.
And for *****'s sake, let your cats and dogs run around. That's what they live for.
I hate this article.
I agree with some of the points but it's such an ignorant article that I'm angry now. - thegreenspanput, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4green your pet??
you hippies are sounding worse and worse by the day. - wheezy360, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5While I agree with adopting from a shelter, it's not fair for all breeders to be labeled as they have been by this article. There are reputable registered breeders in this world who care immensely for the health and safety of their dogs and would be disgusted at the thought of being grouped together with the puppy mills and back yard breeders that are the ones churning out unhealthy pets for profit. The bottom line here is do your research on breeders as well, if adoption is not the course you wish to take. There is nothing wrong with buying a healthy, pure bred pet from a reputable AKC / CKC registered breeder.
- elvenrunelord, on 06/17/2008, -3/+6I was hesitant at first to digg this but there are actually some good ideas. Over all in their natural settings all animals are green. Remember they have been on this planet for much longer than we have and were doing great until we started crowding them.
- DmtriPutin, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3I picked up 1 dog and 2 cats, both from a shelter. Best damn pets I've ever owned - pretrained and attention whores. So it's best for everyone to evaluate their current position in life too. If you buy a puppy, do you have the time to sit and work with it for up to 6 months in the beginning?
- Niomi, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3I agree one should go to the pet shelter first, but I don't think breeders are all that bad. It is tough to make money breeding animals for pets. (show animals are something entirely different) There are a lot of shady breeders in the business who neglect animals for their profits. However, there are also a lot of people who love what they do, treat the animals very well, and keep their prices affordable only to help with the burden of their expenses. For rodents, between pet stores and breeders, privatized breeders are often the best way to get a socialized animal.
- Michiko280, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3Actually...it's how NOT to spend a ***** on your pet for no reason. Such as getting it from a shelter.
- ricksite, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I agree. I did have time to work with my dog when she was a puppy. It was a lot of work and I am very happy with my dog. I knew another person who probably should have adopted or remained petless. She ended up having to return her puppy because she was able to handle it.
- DebsW, on 06/17/2008, -4/+6Nice list - I never realised that about the clumping cat litter although I never liked my cats using it - now I have a reason!
- gridity, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3"Eco-friendly cat litters avoid these problems; a happy cat is a cat that doesn’t claw your face off."

- ChayesFSS, on 06/18/2008, -2/+4who think this drivel up?
- ricksite, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Poo is not the best fertilizer in the world. It will often hurt the grass before it fertilizes it. Poo also harbors worms and other diseases.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2So when kids play in your yard, they play in *****.
- Calibur, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2***** getting real trendy... kinda like the early 90's
- ricksite, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2"Love knows no pedigree." Maybe love knows no pedigree but certain tasks do. Different dogs were bred for different purposes. A pug is not ideal for herding cattle in the same way that a border collie is not great for sitting on your lap (although they probably try). I am all for people adopting dogs if that works for them but I also have no problem if someone wants to have a purebred dog. The problem is with people who breed dogs for the wrong reasons (including accidental breeding).
- Spuy767, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2I buried it for the anti-cat slant it appreared to have. Mangy feline. . . What the *****?
- VoodooPunk, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1This article just saved mankind for another 3.6 months. What would we ever do without all these great ideas from our friendly enviro-wackos?
- cjschmidt, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I'm all for adopting pets (I'd never buy from a puppy mill), but most responsible owners spay or neuter their pets nowadays. Most shelters are overrun with rottweilers and bulldogs - not a good match for many people. I'm a hound dog guy - give me a beagle-mutt any day.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1My blue heeler http://www.cattledog.com/gallery/dogs/checkers.htm ... shreds any varmint he can find. I make sure he takes a dump in the bushes at the park.
- jayemee, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Actually we've all been here exactly the same amount of time as each other. We're not some alien new come to this world - we're just another animal that evolved along with all the others. We just proved more destructive then the rest.
- VacantThoughts, on 06/18/2008, -3/+4In other words "How to spend a ***** load of money on your pet for no real reason"
- Michiko280, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2"Scoop up your doggie doo in biodegradable poop bags so your buddy’s No. 2 isn’t immortalized in a plastic bag, while deep-sixed in a landfill somewhere for hundreds of years."
hehe. :) They have bags called "biobags" and they are awesome biodegradable pooper scoopers! - Spuy767, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1http://www.dpmhi.com/elements/stored/product_group ...
- youngelvis, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1"cats are the biggest, baddest bird killers of all time."
my cats have never managed to bring down anything with a vertebral column. however, they are psycho killers of palmetto bugs. - Davoidbot, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I prefer using spray pain.
- secrity, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1My cat doesn't dine on cat litter. Any incidental amount picked up and ingested while grooming is excreted and it is not going to cause problems. Clumping cat litter can be a problem for kittens because they DO eat cat litter.
- WoollyMittens, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1To green your pet, I recommend a water-based paint or hair-dye. Spray-paint causes toxic fumes.
- mordeci, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I green my pet. I blue myself.
- kds405, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1We should sent all of our dogs to the big, Texas sized garbage island in the Pacific. That will show them who's boss for ruining our enviroment single-handedly.
- lejeune, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Green your pet? Seriously? Are people aware that the oceans are filled with garbage?
- DeFex, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1my cats automatic litter box requires clumping cat litter to work properly. and the cats are fine.
- charlietuna, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Low environmental impact pet you say? Donate to an organization that sterilizes strays. Walk to the beach, adopt a pet rock. I'll bet that's not what you had in mind though.
- DeFex, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1if they only kill sparrows, starlings, and pigeons they are helping local wildlife. those things are all invasive species.

- robbiedo, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1My bird is a Green Cheek Conure. So, yeah, he gets the whole green thing. Blends in well with the forest canopy, also.
- bbqsalad, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1the "blog-o-sphere" and mac users...
- trollhunter, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Fireboy is a "label queen". ROFL
- DmtriPutin, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1My dog's ***** makes our grass grow green and high every where she goes! As long as she's around, there's unlimited, low cost fertilizer! So, I'm probably not gonna pick up it up. Evidently, our ground loves it!
- haikuFU, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0Not all breeders are bad. And certain breeds are very risky to adopt. Case in point, German Shepherds. German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and other ailments. GSD's from American lines have been literally RUINED by the AKC's show guidelines. The sloping back requirement has destroyed their hips, and since they are bred for looks and not smarts, they can bite out of fear and are worthless for a working dog.
So, unless you want to have $6k worth of vet bills for hip surgery at some point (some need it as early as 2 years old) or you want a dog that hasn't been properly socialized or you like aggression/dominance issues, then you need to find a breeder with solid european lines and OFA certified parents, or find an adoptee with papers. - VacantThoughts, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1The first one maybe, but compare the costs of normal pet food for a year to organic pet food. And buying "pet safe ice melter", who the hell does that?
- FuryOfThor, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0If you go to pet shows, then yes. Those, by definition, are hell.
